Associated Press:

President Bush will tell the nation Thursday evening that he plans to reduce the American troop presence in Iraq by as many as 30,000 by next summer but will condition those and further cuts on continued progress, The Associated Press has learned.

In a 15-minute address from the White House at 9 p.m. EDT, Bush will endorse the recommendations of his top general and top diplomat in Iraq, following their appearance at two days of hearings in Congress, administration officials said. The White House plans to issue a written status report on the troop buildup on Friday, they said.

Abu Risha, one of the Sunni chiefs that met with Bush, was killed by a bomb.

The American occupation of Iraq will never produce peace. It will prevent peace.

And what about the 100K+ private civilian army and contractor that are over there. I know that they aren't being counted, but the are performing side, by side with the soldiers and unfortunately dying with them too.

President George W. Bush has the same amount of credibility speaking about the Iraq War as Senator Larry Craig has speaking about homosexuality.

TEXAS CITY, Texas (AP) - The mother of a soldier who died in a Baghdad vehicle accident weeks after co-writing a New York Times op-ed piece -- wants the Army to explain his death.

The August 19th editorial co-written by 28-year-old Sergeant Omar Mora was critical of the Pentagon's positive assessment of the Iraq war.

Mora, who grew up in Texas City, enlisted after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Olga Capetillo says she wants to know details of how her son died Monday.

Capetillo said that in the weeks since writing the piece with six other active duty soldiers, Mora had seemed depressed and withdrawn.

Mora and co-authors Sergeant Yance Gray of Ismay, Montana, died in the vehicle accident -- along with five other U.S. soldiers and two detainees.

The single-vehicle accident also wounded eleven other soldiers and one detainee.

The military did not mention hostile fire when referring to the accident.

Iran rocket used in attack on key Iraq base: U.S. 39 minutes ago

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Thursday an Iranian-made rocket was believed to have been used in an attack that killed one person on the headquarters of the American military in Iraq this week.

Military spokesman Major-General Kevin Bergner said it appeared followers of the anti-American Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr were responsible for the attack on Tuesday.

While Bergner would not confirm the rocket hit the large Camp Victory military base near Baghdad airport, he said the attack killed one person and wounded 11 others.

In a statement late on Tuesday, the military said one third country national was killed and 11 multinational troops wounded in an "indirect fire" attack on the base, which is less prone to attack than other U.S. facilities given its size and location.

bush is taking americans for suckers; he is withdrawing the same number of soldiers that were involved in "the surge". sad part is, americans will believe this lying piece of shit and hail it as a genuine withdrawal from iraq. if bush were not so criminally inept, the whole bush term would be a bad joke.

Looks like some of Hufftards work.

Over the weekend, something happened here at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. Something destructive. Something dishonorable. Along the foot of the wall, covering a stretch almost two-thirds of the entire monument, an oily substance was spilled on the panels and paving stones that were built to pay tribute to those who gave their lives on the battlefield.

The National Park Service is investigating. Whatever the substance was, it was potent and corrosive. Huge swaths of the wall have been defaced. This is despicable desecration.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Founder and President Jan C. Scruggs said “While it is unclear what transpired, we are heartened by the response of the veterans’ community and the general public. After 25 years, their connection to The Wall remains as strong as ever, and we appreciate that.”

This vandalism comes on the eve of a massive anti-war protest by radicals who have threatened our national monuments before

There is roughly an equivalent number of mercenaries, so if there are 160k mercenaries at $80k per year and 160k troops at $25k per year, US taxpayers are putting out about $17 billion a year just for the salaries of the killers and the cannon fodder.

What would be a great turn of events for the Republican Party?
Timed for maximum advantage around the time of the Republican convention, the announcement of a committed drawdown of our troops leading to our exit from Iraq!
07:21 PM on 09/12/2007
Too long, way too long. Congress is to give him NO MORE TIME!

He's stalling so that he can dump and run in January '09, then collecting all of the money he's helped his friends earn on the backs of our troops and Iraqis....he must NOT be permitted to do so.
