Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) delivered a "major policy speech" on Iraq Wednesday in Clinton, Iowa. Below, an excerpt of the speech obtained by the Huffington Post:

We hear eerie echoes of the run-up to the war in Iraq in the way that the President and Vice President talk about Iran. They conflate Iran and al Qaeda. They issue veiled threats. They suggest that the time for diplomacy and pressure is running out when we haven't even tried direct diplomacy. Well George Bush and Dick Cheney must hear - loud and clear - from the American people and the Congress: you don't have our support, and you don't have our authorization for another war.

More from the speech, titled "Turning the Page in Iraq":

"Conventional thinking in Washington lined up for war. The pundits judged the political winds to be blowing in the direction of the President. Despite - or perhaps because of how much experience they had in Washington, too many politicians feared looking weak and failed to ask hard questions. Too many took the President at his word instead of reading the intelligence for themselves. Congress gave the President the authority to go to war. Our only opportunity to stop the war was lost."

"There is something unreal about the debate that's taking place in Washington... The bar for success is so low that it is almost buried in the sand. The American people have had enough of the shifting spin. We've had enough of extended deadlines for benchmarks that go unmet. We've had enough of mounting costs in Iraq and missed opportunities around the world. We've had enough of a war that should never have been authorized and should never have been waged."

"I opposed this war from the beginning. I opposed the war in 2002. I opposed it in 2003. I opposed it in 2004. I opposed it in 2005. I opposed it in 2006. I introduced a plan in January to remove all of our combat brigades by next March. And I am here to say that we have to begin to end this war now."

"Let me be clear: there is no military solution in Iraq, and there never was. The best way to protect our security and to pressure Iraq's leaders to resolve their civil war is to immediately begin to remove our combat troops. Not in six months or one year - now. We should enter into talks with the Iraqi government to discuss the process of our drawdown. We must get out strategically and carefully, removing troops from secure areas first, and keeping troops in more volatile areas until later. But our drawdown should proceed at a steady pace of one or two brigades each month. If we start now, all of our combat brigades should be out of Iraq by the end of next year."

"Some argue that we should just replace Prime Minister Maliki. But that wouldn't solve the problem...The problems in Iraq are bigger than one man. Iraq needs a new Constitutional convention that would include representatives from all levels of Iraqi society - in and out of government. The United Nations should play a central role in convening and participating in this convention, which should not adjourn until a new accord on national reconciliation is reached."

"The President would have us believe there are two choices: keep all of our troops in Iraq or abandon these Iraqis. I reject this choice... It's time to form an international working group with the countries in the region, our European and Asian friends, and the United Nations.... We should up our share to at least $2 billion to support this effort; to expand access to social services for refugees in neighboring countries; and to ensure that Iraqis displaced inside their own country can find safe-haven. .... Iraqis must know that those who engage in mass violence will be brought to justice. We should lead in forming a commission at the U.N. to monitor and hold accountable perpetrators of war crimes within Iraq."

"I'm here today because it's not too late to come together as Americans. Because we're not going to be able to deal with the challenges that confront us until we end this war. What we can do is say that we will not be prisoners of uncertainty. That we reject the conventional thinking that led us into Iraq and that didn't ask hard questions until it was too late. What we can say is that we are ready for something new and something bold and something principled."

What the matter Mitt, Obama doesn't wear those special little undies like you, therefore he isn't WH material. Yea, like you are, your a mouthpiece for your church and party. So, Mitt wants to keep this war going huh, well I guess those five boys may have to forgo their little missions for the Mormons and enlist, or maybe we will just have to draft them. If this WAR continues they will have to re institute the draft, per General Peteraus, in one of his not so secret meetings with Bush. Good re instate it, then send every single person still supporting this WAR, no matter their age to IRAQ.This way they can get a first hand look at what our soldiers are putting up with daily. And no fair hiding out in the Green Zone.
Obama knows, Bush is sending signals regarding Iran and that's been Bush/Cheney's goal all along, they figured Iraq, would be a piece of cake then they could continue their march through Iran and Syria.

All this MADMAN and his ilk care about is getting a hugh base built in Iraq and gaining control of all the middle east oil. That way they can regulate the flow of oil to China and India, thus remaining the country with total GLOBAL CONTROL. MASTERS of the planet!

With your delirious rant, one has to wonder who the madman is.

Here's a hint---the madman is your Fearful Leader, whom you will support no matter what.

Party before country---It's the Republican way.

And you're just fine with that, aren't you?

Sorry Obama but he DOES have the authorization to wage war on anyone he feels like...YOU the congress gave it to him on Sept 14, 2001 when you gave him executive priv to "protect" this country any way he sees fit. The ONLY way you now have to STOP him is to CUT THE FUNDING.!!! Hes crusing over to Iran at a steady pace and he doesnt care about polls or Democrats

Obama wasn't in the Congress in 2001.

Obama To Bush: "You Don't Have Our Authorization" For Iran War

Bush To Obama: "You Don't Have Our Authorization" For Questioning Me

Obama is not questioning President Bush. That would entail a conversation that has give and take in it. Obama wants to impose his world view on the rest of America and it is that view that Americans aren't buying. The purpose of Obama's actions are to undercut our war effort while building up his own reputation for standing up for something. The pity is that he chooses our President to oppose rather than the terrorists.

You really are running on empty, aren't you?

Your utter cluelessness is very entertaining, in a very sad way.

How you remain so totally uninformed is an object lesson for anyone who aspires to have the ability to think clearly.

Obama's speech demostrates, once again, how little experience he has. Bby eliminating solutions he has painted himself into a corner that allows America's enemies to win without firing a shot. Any of the tactics being used against us today will be far more effective after we cut and run. Obama and the rest of the anti-war, anti-Bush crowd believe if they eschew violence our enemies will follow suit. A most ridiculous assumption. In addition, negotiations can only work between good faith parties. When we negotiate with rogue nations, such as North Korea, Iran, Sadaam's Iraq we only set up the conditions of failure as these criminal nations have no intention of complying with the terms they agree to. Of course DEmocrats like Obama aren't interested in doing what's right they only want to maintain their positions and do what's expedient. Fortuntely Obama won't get by Hillary and we aon't have to worry about him giving our Country away to the Fanatic Muslims.

You win the prize for most GOP talking points in one post.

As long as our policy towards Iran is regime-change (and it is) they will have no incentive to negotiate with us. They're not going to negotiate themselves out of existence.

Please express the alternative. If Obama negotiates with them, what incentive do they have to negotiate? Germany has already stated it will not impose more sanctions. Does Obama propose to reward them for obtaining nuclear weapons?

Your post illustrates my point about republicans. Republicans have been wrong about EVERYTHING since 2000, yet you expect people to believe your RNC talking points and conveniently forget the last 7 years and all the statements of fact by republicans that turned out not to be true. Fortunately, your act is tired, you've cried wolf too many times, and the American people aren't buying what you're selling.

Time to move along troll.

It is your act that is tired. Ignore any progress and refuse to take any action, while complaining the whole time. The Dems like to whine about the war, but never defund it. Why is that? They value their own skins and positions more than promoting the common good.

What boggles my mind in all of this is that after all the death, lies, torture, dishonor, thievery, corruption, destruction, and all the other ills, incompetenc and misgovernance wrought by bush and repubs since 2000, there is still roughly 30% of America who support them and will vote R again.

What the @#$%#$!!! are these people thinking? Does a party's record account for nothing to these people? I'm really having a hard time grasping how any reasonable America before party person would think that re-electing the same people to office will somehow yield a different result, and America will suddenly become the bastion of goodwill and a shining light once again.

Obama may not be perfect (no one is), but he is vastly preferable to any republican. For that matter, a sack of spuds would govern better than any republican. At least the spuds are useful.

Bush and Cheney made a deal with the Saudi King, were going to invade Iraq, overthrow Saddam, take over the country and we will share the oil wealth with you, then were going into Iran and take them out and replace their government with one we choose and of course divvy up their oil! Now, Bush and Cheney are crapping their drawers because they thought Iraq would be a stroll int he park, it wasn't and now they have to start the drumbeat towards Iran. Bush thinks he can declare WAR on any country he wants and send our military to their country. I have no idea what he thinks our Military is suppose to do, throw rocks at them. Our military is exhausted, broken and bankrupt. So, is our country. If Bush even hints at invading Iran, he must immediately be IMPEACHED.

Why should the decider ask for any authorization to attack Iran ? He is free to chose the moment for the first strike. As far as I know, he doesn't have the go ahead to continue the Iraq war by the American people either. Does it bother him ? I don't think so.

.
We have let madmen lie us into madness.

Now they want to attack Iran.

Does anyone think that will end the madness?

Impeach Bush. Stop the madmen. Stop the war while we still can.

Mr Obama is wrong when he says that the problems in Iraq are bigger than one man. One man DID control the vast differences that malign the country - AND WE WATCHED HIM HANG WITH GLEE.

If that were trues, and Saddam Hussein was responsible for the problems of Iraq, why, do you propose, are we still there and our troops are fighting for their very lives?

Saddam Hussein may have helped perpetuate religious persecution in Iraq, but he didn't start it, and he certainly doesn't have a hand in the current situation.

Obama says "you don't have our authorization." Does he think he needs it ? Can Obama say Gulf of Tonkin? When the time is right- and IT IS fast approaching- the criminals in the White House will do one of two things. They will either allow another major terrorist attack here, or instigate an attack aganist the navy in the Persian Gulf. The whoring press, the cowardly congress( including Obama) and the brainwashed public will go along hook, line and yellow-ribbons to join the march to invade Iran.

Lots of blood spills in Iraq.

Looks like some of Hufftards work.

Over the weekend, something happened here at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. Something destructive. Something dishonorable. Along the foot of the wall, covering a stretch almost two-thirds of the entire monument, an oily substance was spilled on the panels and paving stones that were built to pay tribute to those who gave their lives on the battlefield.

The National Park Service is investigating. Whatever the substance was, it was potent and corrosive. Huge swaths of the wall have been defaced. This is despicable desecration.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Founder and President Jan C. Scruggs said "While it is unclear what transpired, we are heartened by the response of the veterans" community and the general public. After 25 years, their connection to The Wall remains as strong as ever, and we appreciate that."

This vandalism comes on the eve of a massive anti-war protest by radicals who have threatened our national monuments before

Thank God that ONE of the Democrats is finally verbally taking on the Bush administration for its obvious, lying march into another disastrous war - this one with Iran!
Anyone who knows anything about the Middle East knows that this would be the most dangerous & dreadful step-- for our country and indeed, the entire planet!
I am ready to vote for & volunteer for Barak Obama now, just on the basis of this one issue! Don't stop challenging them, Mr. Obama!!!! I urge my fellow citizens to contact their Senators, as I have done; and the major news organizations, as I have done, to protest this looming disaster!!

I have been reading all the comments, and I am dismayed at the anger and division displayed. We are all Americans, and the current leadership threatens us all. Instead of taking sides along party lines, examine the evidence as we can already see and as we can find through research, then make your voices heard where it truly counts. This is a government founded upon the people's pleasure, all who work in Washington ostensibly work because we put them there. If we do not agree with the policies put forth in our name, then we have the right to dissent, and we should. This is how we are kept impotent, by division and confusion. Stop buying into it, and focus on the main goal: to get our troops out of harm's way, and let these folks work out their own government, or governments. If we don't recognize game when it is being played on us, we are the suckers PT Barnum talked about so long ago.
