An ad criticizing the top U.S. general in Iraq raised charges on Thursday that The New York Times slashed its advertising rates for political reasons -- an accusation denied by the paper.

The ad by liberal anti-war group moveon.org ran on Monday, the day of Gen. David Petraeus's testimony to Congress about the war and how long U.S. forces will stay in Iraq.

Katherine Mathis, Vice President of Corporate Communications at the Times.

"It has nothing to do with ideology," said Mathis today, "It has to do with the day it appears and how it is placed."

The Times advertising department categorized the Moveon's ad as an "advocacy" (cause and appeal) ad, and the rate isn't based on which side of the political aisle you're on. It depends on any number of factors, including whether the ad is in color or black & white and the manner of placement.

An ad from who criticized the NYT? And have these people been reached for comment about Fox News "editorial policies"?

General Petraeus, betrayed us.

Move on.

Why? Because he told the truth. Something that the NYT and MoveOn have no concept of.

And how exactly did General Patreaus betray you? Did he go to Iraq under your orders to push the liberal agenda of "cut, run and surrender"?

Newspapers are in a state of decline as a result of the internet. They are losing more of their advertising dollars to the web every day. In addition, it is common practice for them to cut really good deals on big ads, especially to good clients. I know, I have worked for two major metropolitan dailies.

The overall tenor of all the mainstream media tends to be right-wing, and slightly paranoid, ever since 911 when the Bush regime began to equate criticism of their policies with treason.

Let's be real...was MoveOn wrong in their assumption? Hmmm...
At this moment we do still have Free Speech, don't we? Can we just pretend that we do?
On the ad cost, NYT has the right to charge whatever they want. Right...rights...we still have these don't we?
What I find offensive, scary and shameful are the repeated attempts to marginalize those who dare to question.

So the neocons can make billions off Iraq. But when actual human beings run an ad THEY'RE the ones who are traitors?

Instead of attacking the CONTENT, instead the conservatives attack the messenger.

typical...

No, we attack the content also. MoveOn.org is dispicable.

Why do the repubs even care? They don't like the Times. It's too liberal for their closed minds. Besides, they've got faux news constantly spewing their agenda. Grow up guys - expect a little competition.

Just out of curiousity, how many in charge of Moveon.org have ever served in the military?

"The newspaper did not see the content of the add before the price was quoted."
What the hell did they think Moveon.org was going to run? It's pretty much a given that you can expect some crazy Left Wing? Liberal? Progressive? (or whatever title you're running from this week) rhetoric.

On any other day I would have supported the MoveOn ad, but to run it on Sept. 11th was just wrong, wrong, wrong, discounted or not. I'm a 9/11 survivor, life-long Democrat and total anti-Iraq war. If our military had been allowed to do its job, Bin Laden, the man who murdered so many of my neighbors and friends, would be dead, dead, dead. Running the Be-tray-us ad on 9/11 just helped the Republicans to find something else to dump on the left about, instead of facing the truth about their President's failure to fight the right war.
