Wal-Mart is shelving its "Always Low Prices" slogan after 19 years and launching an advertising campaign that plays up life's little pleasures over no-frills practicality.

The new motto -- "Save Money. Live Better." -- will show up on everything from store receipts to plastic bags. Accompanying 30-second TV spots were created by the Martin Agency, the Richmond firm behind the Geico gecko and caveman ads. The Wal-Mart ads began appearing yesterday and will run on network season premieres, specials and cable channels.

"Save Money. Live Better."

That's good advice if you ignore that it's meant to lure you into a Walmart. Stop watching tv, escape all ads, listen to what YOU really need and want, and buy the best quality you can afford. You'll shop much less, do more, sleep more, read more, eat less, etc., and you'll have fewer but much better "toys."

(This message has been brought to you by Yo' Smugness who's been tv-free for over four years ... brag, brag, brag :)

Haven't even parked in a Wal Mart parking lot in over 20 years. I will spend double the price to shop in one of my locally owned stores or do without.

My favorite fantasy, next to my newest one of marrying the BITCH is to get a couple of tons of C-4 and travel the country blowing up these monsters.

They might as well just say
"Cheap shit made by children that won't work and will probably give you cancer"

Does it say 'made in China' on the bottom of the new bag?

Last time was 6-7 years ago and you could see the trashy looking people with lots of unnecesary junk in their carts. They should have been saving their money Remember when Bush gave out the $300 checks and China-Mart said you could cash them there?? real big of them.

In the last two years I have bought several houshold items and a few big ticket items (a TV and two video game consoles) from Walmart and all of it failed soon thereafter. When I buy stuff elsewhere it seems to do just fine. I don't think that this is coincidence and have since stopped buying anything from Wallyworld. You're not really saving anything if you end up having to replace it.

Their new slogan should be "Made in China".

They've already put that sticker on everything in the store.

The new slogan should be....

"Save Money. Live Better....as we make trillions on our cheap shit from China"

$2,500 a year works out to $1.20 an hour at full time wages. So, you save $1.20 an hour, but you lost manufacturing jobs to overseas markets that used to pay twice as much per hour with full benefits. What a bargain.

Martin Agency did UPS' Whiteboard campaign as well as the Geico Caveman commercials.

You can't hit a homerun everytime you step up to the plate.

What they going to replace the old slogan with?

How about something more accurate like:

"Wal-Mart,... helping send your US Manufacturing Jobs to China since 1990!"

or

"Wal-Mart,... selling you shoddy foreign-made crap that you don't need for less!"

Well,... OK,... those might be bad marketing ideas though.

I suspect that actually the new slogan is a slap at the slogan "Live Better, Work Union". It's also interesting that their portrayal of "saving money" - buying a car or going to Disneyworld is actually spending money. If you shop at Wal-Mart will you have an extra $2500 to put into a piggy bank, a mutual fund, or maybe, to be safe, under your mattress. You know SAVING money as opposed to SPENDING money. I doubt it.

Their slogan ought to be "Save money, live better while people in the third world suffer on your behalf"

Name one chain of stores in the US in which that is not the case?

So, what is your point? That because others do it then it is ok? Wal Mart is the worst offender so they get the most criticism. It is well deserved.

And, if you avoid shopping at chain stores whenever possible then you too can help end the ill effects of globalization.

Uh, exactly how much does the "average" Wal-Mart shopper spend if Wal-Mart thinks they're saving $2500 a year?

Your WM shopping dollars support the communist chinese military. So keep buying that crap and see where the next war comes from.

P.S. - the date for the next war is shortly after bush burns out the US military in the desert.

You are right on the mark with that one. And since we don't manufacture anything here anymore lets see how globalization affects our national security when we can't get necessary goods anymore.

Same can be said of most electronic stores, computers and many more items. Yet you single out Wal Mart.

Why is that?

Cosco sells products from china.
