CIA Bans Use Of Water-Boarding During Interrogations

First Posted: 03/28/08 03:45 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:15 PM ET

ABC News:

The controversial interrogation technique known as water-boarding, in which a suspect has water poured over his mouth and nose to stimulate a drowning reflex, has been banned by CIA director Gen. Michael Hayden, current and former CIA officials tell ABCNews.com.

The officials say Hayden made the decision at the recommendation of his deputy, Steve Kappes, and received approval from the White House to remove water-boarding from the list of approved interrogation techniques first authorized by a presidential finding in 2002.

Just have to add one more comment...who actually believes that the CIA "banning" waterboarding means anything? It's just words, like Bush saying "we don't torture". He's a liar, as are all the people he has put in positions of power, including the redoubtable Gen. Michael "probable cause is not in the 4th Amendment" Hayden. There is absolutely no reason to believe (unless you are a gullible child), in this era of super-secrecy and lack of accountability, that what they say has anything to do with what they do. There is no transparency in the CIA, which means that this cannot be verified, and thus, it is my considered opinion that waterboarding is still on the table, and that any torture techniques they care to employ, are in use in dark, dank super-secret dungeons that would have made the Grand Inquisitor proud. The rack, not a problem. The Iron Maiden...cool. Getting boiled in oil in Uzbekistan by our "allies" who promise "not to torture"...where's the problem?

There are monsters among us in sheeps clothing.

Mentally ill people use the American Safety excuse to do to people what they've done to pets and neighbor's kids since they were born.

Demons.

Waterboarding - like all torture - is not useful in real interrogations. People will say whatever the torturer seems to want them to say, just so long as the torture stops.

Real (professional) interrogators don't use torture - because it leads to false confessions. This banning is hopefully a recognition of that fact and a statement that the CIA Director wants real/valid information

Read the history of the CIA, and not the one our government stooges have written. Then you will see that they are not really part of the US but a rogue group, along with the Mossad, KGB. ISI, etc., who do pretty much what they feel like. Don't believe me though, and before I'm accused of being a tin hatter, do some research yourself. How long are Americans going to continuously believe people who lie to us on a daily basis? Do you pick and chose what to believe according to your world view? Today we will believe this, because it fits what we want to hear. Tomorrow we won't believe that because we don't like the sounds of it. Be logical. Question it ALL!

Why would anyone believe this pack of lying muderers? The CIA can kiss my white ass.

.

Sounds more like another CIA PR spin/lie to appease political factions prior to elections.

It's very easy for an organization that operates in the shadows to say their going to stop water boarding when there's no way to confirm that they will actually stop the practice.

How very generous of the CIA to ban waterboarding? Of course, our chief torturer, the Decider authorized it, didn't he? When will they decide to ban torture, period? Or would that be too much to expect? After all, what could they do then to those inmates at our Cuban Ausschwitz? It disgusts me to think that we have been so transparent about our torturing. The whole world knows about it. How can we even begin to think that we are now respected. I am ashamed that they call themselves Americans and hide behind the flag and the Ten Commandments. Bush = Butcher. The names even resemble each other.

...How about just putting these savages on the FOX News' Bill O'Rielly or Sean Hannity shows for interviews? The savages would say anything to stop hearing the alleged "fair and balanced" political bullshit coming from these propaganda pimps.

I was about to add "about time" or "finally," but I think the headline on ABCNEWS.COM says it all:

"Old Spies Never Die; They Just Outlast Political Bosses."

The 'illegal' presidential signing statement that allowed 'torture' is like the person that signed it and like Fredo described in an earlier article here on the huffpo ! WE the People don't torture and that should be the first damn thing that WE let the world know that this false/failed commander in thief/chief is a disgrace to US and to the world. AND you know that was when McCain lost my respect completely! when a bill was passed out of the senate that WE the People DONT and WONT allow torture and George used an illegal signing statement NOBODY stood up to him especially McCain who had been on the other end of torture! Well that torture turned him into a rethuglican shill and shouldnt be allowed to continue to be a senate let alone run for president! NO rethuglican should be allowed in Congress that doesnt honor the oath they took to the Constitution NOT the 'party'!

I posted the first post on this.
I said simple every Republican candidate except
Ron Paul and John McCain supports torture.
I also posted a link to the Republican debate
that proved my point. I will not work that hard again. Huffy just took the post out.
I think Bill O has Huffy and Ariana scared. they won't let the truth stay on the Huff_post

I expect them to take this one out as well.
Guiliani supports torture, he said so in the Republican debate.

I am shocked, yes, REALLY shocked to hear anyone in this bunch in the White House or their minions admit that they had heretofore approved water boarding. No surprise to me even though they denied that our military used this method, since that practice seems right in keeping with this lawless regime we have in office now. For shame. Next time someone mistreats our captured prisoners, we will have NO room to criticize the captors, no matter what despicable behavior they use to break down our military during interrogation. This regime has made us a shame throughout the civilized world. Besides, it defies all their chest beating about their super religiosity.
