Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said Friday that he hoped to cut the U.S. force in Iraq to nearly half its current size by the end of 2008, a more dramatic reduction than President Bush endorsed this week and a new indication of divergent viewpoints within the administration and the military.

Bush and Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, proposed modest reductions to bring U.S. troop levels to between 130,000 and 140,000 by July. Although Petraeus said additional reductions were possible by the end of next year, Gates went further Friday and said he hoped troop levels would drop to 100,000. There are 20 ground combat brigades, or 169,000 troops, in Iraq.

Gates, an early skeptic of the troop buildup that began this year, took pains Friday to emphasize that the Bush administration's top military advisors agreed on how to proceed in Iraq. But Gates' comments reflect underlying rifts within the military, between commanders in the field and those at the Pentagon, as the war enters its latest phase.

Does anyone think that there is a snowball's chance in hell that Bush and Cheney will listen to Gates?

Not a chance. He's directing the focus for blame back onto the WH. I expect much more of this in the coming months when Bush's ruinous policies come home to roost.

Smoke and mirrors

He was on "This week with George"(Clinton defector) and spoke of leaving a "small fraction" in Iraq 100,000 by next year. Small???

When asked where he would get more troops if needed in March he stated "I don't want to get into that hypothetical", when pressed he said guard and/or extentions "We have 2.1 million in our armed forces."

A quagmire that will never end. But that was the plan all along.

What the hell is Condi doing? Hiding?

Maybe this is a man that can see that the closer we come to qualifing as one of those 3rd world governments we have been conditioned to viewing as corrupt politicians and military and judges is what we now openly have as our own ... the closer we come to using internal violence to acquire justice.

this will not go much further before it moves beyond the days of the mcarthy era ... which some of our leading tv spokesmen so admire (pat buccanan ... to specifically name one) and the true lower class right wingers that belive in liberatian government start eliminating everyone around the evil professional liars in business, government, police, and judges. Thats how it's done when government fails the people to the point they have less fear of getting punished that the joy of acquireing justice for sheer joy of it.

Leaders need to fear for their lives and do more good than bad to insure that they survive the leadership role. Thats maybe the flim-flam of the democratic process of term of 2, 4 and 6year elections. Nobody's there long enough to punish for corruption and there's always that 'presidental pardon' that must be reserved for people who have never worked for or served in government roles anytime, anywhere. The process is setup for rolling corruption to happen without punitive actions against the perputrators. we gotta roll back the constitution to the original with no income tax, no standing army, no corporate rights and priviledge of a person crap.

Gates gave up a nice career in academia for a thankless job nursemaiding a halfwit commander in chief so even though he is a Republican let's at least give him credit for making a sacrifice, which is more than we can say for most of us. Bush wants to forget that the US has other military commitments besides Iraq because he understands the nature of his historical legacy will be shaped by the outcome of this war. Bush argues for maintaining current troop levels in Iraq for the next year. I would imagine that Gates looks at the world and can only pray that we won't be compelled to make another military commitment anywhere for a while. Bush may not care that the Army and Marines have no more reserve force and the National Guard is broken but Gates and the JCS have to deal with the day to day knowledge of this small detail. Am I the only one who feels that such flagrant ignorance of the status of the military represents gross incompetence if not outright malfeasance?

??Why are Cheney and Bush still in power?? They were never elected to office , they stole it both terms. Lord only knows how many other government seats (Senate & House+) they have stolen. They have broke our constitution and laws both of our land and international.
They help the outing of a covert CIA agent , they lie for war with Iraq. They illegally spy on American citizens. They data mined our (health records & bank records) , open our mail , collect data from our personal information on the internet , destroyed our jobs , health benefits , retirement benefits , our democracy , our military and handed our country's wealth & power over to Global corporations.
WHY ARE THEY STILL IN OFFICE????

What a quick return on success! 30,000 more can go home than recommended by the Great General. Thank you Master Gates for daring to defile Lord Bush.

But we want the other 100,000 you won't remove your bloody eagle talons from. You fucking scammed us, abused our trust, made a travesty of the American Presidency.

Fuck Bush!

Our politicians are so afraid of being on the wrong side with Israel that they will do nothing to stop this war or to prevent the B-C criminals from launching a totally unjustifiable attack on Iran.
America is Israel's slave. Proof? Well, even while we have to borrow to do it, we keep pouring billions into Israeli coffers. Want more proof? Why do you think that lying bastard Bush is pushing so hard to crank up an attack on Iran? When America was a democracy of free people, that couldn't happen.
Damn it all! We're such slaves that even when Israel attacked the Liberty and murdered our sailors, our forces were not even allowed to go to her defense. That might not have been appreciaterd by Israel.
Our government is a murdering slave, not even a hired killer for Israel. We pay them! But Bush has promised Israel that he will attack Iran.
Slave, what are you going to do to stop him? Blog on Huffington? Ha!

America and Israel are *both* slaves to the Military-Industrial Complex and ultraconservative madmen who are wrecking their countries and the future of their people for the benefit of the State.

and yes, I am saying this to the face of Defense Sec'y Robert Gates, ranger65, pragmatist, master of public relations. even at the risk of my life at the hands of the state (like MLK and John Lennon) or my mind (like the tortured Jose Padilla), I need to know what country I'm living in.

I just saw No End in Sight, and I do not believe the thesis of that documentary. I do not believe that the Iraq campaign has been a series of mistakes and errors and incompetence, due to arrogance, fantasy-thinking, and zealous ideology.

I don't believe it because of how *sure* Bremer was of what he to do in Iraq (disbanding the army, de-Baathification) as though he were following direct marching orders from above (Henry Kissinger?) and implementing a very specific plan to change facts on the ground, to arm and instigate the insurgency and foster domestic criminality and civil unrest.

plus when Bush said "bring 'em on," he meant it. he wanted a fight.

why? are these people really simply blood-thirsty? is it for the profit of defense contractors? what is the reason they ignored what everybody knew had to be done to stabilize and secure and rebuild the country?

I finally came up with a theory, and it fits the facts. my theory is, the Pentagon is preparing for a ground war with China and/or Russia, and they think the way to do that is to develop advanced computer wargame simulations, taking datapoints straight from the frontlines, from camera feeds and reports coming from the troops.

why computer-powered warfare? because computers double in power ever 1.5 years. so to weaponize computers, you develop simulations and robots and unmanned aicrafts.

in short, Iraq is not to fight terror, or war profiteering, or to grab oil (although those are how they got Big Money behind the war). Iraq is first of all practice for World War III.

I agree with you that there were/are no mistakes. All the waring is deliberate. Deliberate evil.

Why won't Congress stop them?

God help us all.

We can only hope that enough people will break with Bush that he will feel lonely and go back to his cowpunching, or fence-mending, or whatever it is he does on his little slice of Texas Heaven.

What I've been waiting for is more and more people like Alan Greenspan who KNOW what went on to come out and tell the TRUTH.

With more powerful figures telling the story in the MEDIA, Bush will be broken. Without them, he will continue his murdering. What we need now are REAL PATRIOTS with guts, whether they let us down earlier or not. NOW is the time to come clean: Colin Powell especially.

The destruction of the US by a few maniacs in power is a horrible thing!!!!!!!!

To our commanders and leaders, the fighting in Iraq is nothing compared to the political fighting they wage with one another on whether to go or stay. They stall, they lie, they position, they attack, they retreat, they resign, all the while blood spills and soaks into the dry sands of Mesopotamia.

Do they care for anything more than their political futures? Do they have the integrity to see that everything didn't change on 9/11, yet it changes everyday for the worse because that day has revealed their cowardice and personal agendas?

Their empiralistic agenda assumes their priviledge to decide the fate of us all. Now, it seems only that they are offended that anyone anywhere should question their sovereign priviledge to rule the world. Iraq is a mess because might does not make right, and, in this abysmal war, being right is merely a point on a political pole opposite that which is left.

What will be left when they are through fighting?
