Impasse Reported In GM-UAW Labor Talks

First Posted: 03/28/08 03:45 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:15 PM ET

The New York Times:

Talks between the United Automobile Workers and General Motors appeared close to an impasse Sunday night, nearly two days after contracts covering 73,000 hourly workers expired.

The dispute came even though the two sides had essentially agreed on the creation of a health care trust that would take responsibility for benefits paid to active and retired workers and their families, people with knowledge of the negotiations said.

Go on support neocons see more of our jobs go out of the country! But remember this who will buy if and support these companies if there are no more good paying jobs in the USA?

Repukes want 2 classes of people the rich governing and the poor working poor men and women. Bush loved it at one of his photo opportunities one lady said she works 3 jobs, and he thought that was great she is probably working 3 jobs just to keep body and soul together. Like Bush's old lady it's working very nicely for the Katrina victims living in a football stadium after they were abandoned after Katrina!!!!

This whole claim is complete nonsense. GM has plenty of money available to pay its CEO $11.0 million a year for doing not much of anything good for anyone. They can pay employee healthcare and pensions, but they choose not to. In other words, GM like all other U.S. corporations is committed to eliminating all benefits and rights for its workers.

Our "Democratic" Congress should pass a law requiring all corporations to pay into a fund for employee retirement/healthcare, require payments be made every month, and take that money out of the corporation's control and turn it over to an institutional trustee. In other words, put it in a secure investment with no risk, and allow employees to apply for their benefits once they reach retirement age.

These corporations have looted the company by grossly increasing management and insider compensation, and not funding the company's future obligations. Someone should start by taking back the insider compensation for the past 10 years, at least everything above a base level of pay, and using that to fund these obligations. (Theory of fraudulent transfer of assets by the corporation to avoid future obligations).

Instead, unfortunately, the insiders will likely get away with it. Just like the grocery workers, and so many others, management will force a new policy by which the older workers will get something, and newer workers will get little. Then all the older workers will be fired. My grocery stores post-strike have been staffed by 12 year olds. I don't know what happened to all the grown-ups, but they don't work there anymore, replaced by $8.00/hour, no-benefit workers.

I rarely see a liberal driving a General Motors vehicle.

Additionally, why aren't the very wealthy liberals pooling their money to assist the UAW? George Soros is a billionaire, he could, personally, purchase at least 500,000 General Motors vehicles and give them to the needy in America that we always hear so much about. John Edwards is a millionaire, he could purchase 50,000 General Motors vehicles.

The Clintons are milionaires, they could purchase 50,000 General Motors vehicles.

The Heinz-Kerrys are millionaires. they could purchase 50,000 General Motors vehicles.

These vehicles purchased by wealthy liberals could simply be given to the needy Americans democrats love to talk about. This would be a tremendous win-win situation for liberals.

God bless the troops.

Americans have become spineless when it comes time to either unionize or protest this war we are in. In Bangkok a few months ago they closed a garment factory to move out of the country and all the 3000 workers immediately started a protest blocking the major freeway to the airport. Within a few days the owners changed their minds and stayed in Thailand.

REAGAN SAID GREED IS GOOD..
BUT APPARENTLY GREED IS GOOD ONLY FOR THE ELITE, NOT THE REGULAR PEOPLE.

Time for Bush to pull a Reagan and ban the the UAW That way we are all screwed. LIR, GM will just move the rest of their plants to Mexico.

This shows what an anachronism unions are in today's America -- their goal should be a successful employer yet instead they want to protect inefficiencies and ineptitude.

GM will still try to drive down US workers wages even if the Government hands them free health care.
04:25 AM on 09/17/2007
I hope there is a strike...if there is, you can kiss GM's ass goodbye...

The unions have been destroyed by greedy corporatists in Washington. Now is the time to reassert their power.

One thing's for sure, if GM is on strike, you can expect the impending recession to come sooner rather than later. The Republicans, in that case, can expect that their certain demise in '08 will be catastrophic rather than disastrous...couldn't happen to a better bunch of bastards.

You know what, fuck the insurance companies. Go straight too government health-care.

It will save us a fortune by eliminating the middle-man. And the government will have a way less paperwork.

You're sick... you are taken care of. End of story.

More bullshit and spin. Hey moron, the cases are judged based on how serious your condition. A doctor can judge better than a blow hard like Limbaugh if someone is in danger. If your suffering for something minor they put you on a waiting list. If you are critical they take you in right away. It really is that simple. They will give you prescriptions in the mean time for pain meds.

Universal health care would eliminate the need for all of this crap. Then again, you already knew that.

Why do we let an industry (healthcare) that is so greedy that it is bankrupting families and companies, hurting senior citizens and their pension funds?
12:03 AM on 09/17/2007
this is the american way
02:36 PM on 09/17/2007
because Reagan created the HMO business.
once established , they fight for their survival ..........to hell the rest of US
10:22 PM on 09/16/2007
How can American industry compete with countries that have far cheaper universal health care.

Even the president of GM warned the Canadians to stick with their universal care, as private insurance is bankrupting them in the USA.
01:47 PM on 09/17/2007
Good for GM,,,,,,,,,,,but GM And FORD should have done that years ago.
they should tell the government that it is the role of federal government to PROTECT the people form SICKNESS as well as Fpreign enemies.
How come the FED always finds money to pour into WARS and never has enough for Healthcare.
The fed should pay for healthcare , not employers,,,,,,,,,,,,,,period
universal health care is really a right of citizens in any civilized country.
02:41 PM on 09/17/2007
ALL THE EMPLOYERS in America should tell Federal Government who is supposed to be PRO-BIZ to pay for the Heatlhcare of all people.

government role is not only to PROTECT people from enemies.............BUT
also PROTECT PEOPLE from IGNORANCE and SICKNESS
