Barry Manilow Boycotts "The View" Because Of Elisabeth Hasselbeck

The man who writes the songs won't be singing any of them on "The View" -- not as long as Elisabeth Hasselbeck is there.

Barry Manilow has backed out of his scheduled appearance on the morning talk show after the show refused to pull Hasselbeck from the interview, "Access Hollywood" has learned.

For those that say he’s a pussy for not taking her on in a debate if he feels that strongly, if you actually watched the show then you’d know that with very few specific exceptions, the entertainment guests don’t go on The View to sit at the ‘hot topics’ table and be part of a political or social debate. The show is not set up that way. They usually show up, answer a few utterly inane questions about their latest album or tour or movie or love life and then perform a song or two or plug their pet charity project and go. What difference does it make to the show who asks the inane questions if the artist has expressed discomfort with one of the five? You give the Manilow segment to Whoopi and Joy (or whomever) and move on. BFD.

While I applaud The View for attempting to stand up for one of their own, even if misguidedly, I applaud and admire Manilow more for his refusal to be a hypocrite. Of course, unlike most of their guests who can’t afford to make waves, he’s in an enviable position of not being under that kind of pressure enabling him to indulge his conscience and principles. Barry Manilow is about as uncontroversial and low risk as they come. Like Kathy Griffin said on Larry King last night, “If *Barry Manilow* is coming down hard on you, then, you know, it's time to look inward.”

Just because the show was booked last July doesn’t mean Manilow knew anything about it. They have booking agents and so forth that handle all of that. He no doubt only recently took a look at his upcoming schedule, spotted The View booking and only then asked his *people* to contact The View. He has them tell The View he’s happy to appear but he would prefer not to interact with EH for personal reasons and could they please arrange for the segment to be with one or two of the other remaining FOUR hosts. There are five freakin’ hosts of that show, and typically only two of the five hosts at a time handle the musical artist interviews – brief interviews and then the artist performs. Should be no big deal, right? His request could have easily been accommodated with no one the wiser. They need Manilow far more than he needs The View, believe me. Except that Bill Gedde, the Exec. Producer, is just as right wing-nut as EH and she’s under his protection and influence. He feeds her much of her rightwing talking points and “research.” Finally he had a woman on the panel that represented his hyper-conservative perspective, but she was such a shrill, ill-informed idiot that he had little choice but to try to help her and try to save her from herself. Now she’s under his (right)wing. So they say no to Manilow and Manilow posts it on his website, and then The View tries to spin it like Manilow was asking for something unreasonable, which he absolutely was not.

Barry rocks. Elizabeth Hasselbeck is a boor at best, and is the one that is completely intolerant of others - and finally someone steps up to the plate to say that isn't acceptable. I watched the View for a while, but won't anymore, because watching EH just not worth the agro. I like all sides to a story, but EH bombards others who hold different POLITICAL positions. Kudos to Barry Manilow. I wish others would follow his lead on this. Elisabeth Hasselbeck typifies pretty much everything that is wrong with American. She is an unthinking sheep who prefers that the wolves care for her never mind that such wolves are devouring her civil liberties and offer no security. She baaaass loudly and never asks the quiet question why 9/11 happened. 19 Saudis hijacked 4 planes and slammed into Twin Towers, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania. It wasn't because they hate our "freedoms." The one who hates our freedom is Ms. Hasselback for she defers her civic responsibilities and willingly surrenders her rights. And while America is at war, she is at the mall. As long as her freedom to shop is unimpeded, Ms. Hasselback has not a care in the world. She is uninformed, incoherent, and delusional. And I am being kind for I could say far worse auguring that like a sheep she deserves to be slaughtered. It is not that I wish her any evil but rather it will be only when the transparency of the Bush Doctrine becomes readily apparent in another terrorist plot, it is people like her who should pay the price for in their abandonment of reason and American principles they have recklessly exposed us all to such slaughter. Understand the underlying causes of 9/11 and we might find an answer but continue to espouse policies of hate only leads to more hate.
