As Congress considers a series of bills that would drastically alter the course of the Iraq war, one prominent Republican senator will be focusing his efforts on condemning a newspaper advertisement.

The Huffington Post has learned that Sen. John Cornyn, R-TX, will introduce a sense of the Senate resolution Thursday criticizing MoveOn.org's recent advertisement in the New York Times. The ad called into question the credibility of Lt. General David Petraeus, suggesting the pseudonym "Betray Us."

Cornyn's amendment proclaims that the general "deserves the full support of the Senate." The MoveOn advertisement, Cornyn's legislation states, not only "impugns the honor and integrity of General Petraeus," but "all the members of the United State Armed forces."

Perhaps in hopes of gaining support for his amendment, Cornyn's measure would also "reaffirm support for all the men and women of the United States Armed Forces."

Cornyn's bill comes on the heels of a GOP filibuster of an amendment, put forth by Sen. Jim Webb, D-VA, requiring that troops be given the same amount of time at home as they spend deployed abroad. A call to Cornyn's office to determine whether a vote against his measure would be regarded as a vote against the troops went unanswered.

Read the text of the amendment here.

Hi,

Heres some related news out today as the moveon.org thing 'really' heats up:

Senate votes to condemn MoveOn, Clinton votes NO!

"Senators Clinton and Obama need to decide whether they"re running for America, or running for MoveOn.org," he said. "If Clinton and Obama cannot bring themselves to take a stand against a vicious attack on the man leading our forces in Iraq, why should American voters believe they are capable of demonstrating the leadership we need in a Commander in Chief?"

I almost fell over yesterday when I heard that Texas rat bastard announcing this.
He was asked if he would allow the addition of the Swift boaters and the people that struck out against Dem form Ga. (sorry forgot his name) a triple amputee Vet. He said that it would be revisionist to go back in time and that Kerry asked for it since he was running for office at the time.
Two things here. Adding Kerry or not, this piece of shit wants once again to stomp on our Constitutional Rights and shame the Dem's for not enlighteneing him.
What the hell is he going to say when Petreus finally has enough (like the others before him)being used as a pawn, retires and he too speaks out? Wonder if he would bring charges against Darth Cheney?
Knuckle dragging Wingers.

Where was the outrage and the apologies when
the Republicans slimed a true war hero,
Senator Max Cleland, who lost both of his
legs and one of his arms on the battlefield?
The Republicans called this war hero, a man
who defines courage, they called him "un-patriotic" when he spoke up about what invading
Iraq would create. The weak, spine-less
Democats did NOT DEMAND AN APOLOGY, they
just do what they always do - HIDE AND CAVE.
These phony attacks from the Republicans about
MoveOn.org are as phony and transparent as
everything they do. And the Democrats are
caving and silent, as always.
It is sickening to watch how pathetic the
Democrats are.

My email to the esteemed Senator:

Your resolution criticizing MoveOn's "Betray Us" ad underscores Republicans' complete disregard for the brave men and women stuck in Iraq without a clear goal or any hope of returning home in the near future.

Rather than whining about this ad, perhaps you could consider doing something to end the occupation of Iraq, which, in my opinion, presents a much graver threat to the troops' safety than anything MoveOn could say about a general.

I wonder how many American soldiers have been killed or wounded while you put this resolution together.

You should be ashamed, sir.

Any question why the GOP is never able to get anything done?

I just called Senators Voinovich and Brown from Ohio and the debate in the Senate started at a little before 12:30 p.m. EDT.

I said that condemning Moveon.org and supporting the troops didn't belong on the same bill, that that is a false association. I told them that vote should be blocked and other votes taken instead, on other measures.

A separate vote taken to support the troops. Then a vote should be taken on a resolution to support the freedom of the press and freedom of speech, mentioning Moveon.org in particular in the bill, and another vote taken condemning Gen. Petraus, and another vote taken holding the Bush administration in contempt of congress, and another vote to censure the president and Dick Cheney, and another vote to begin impeachment hearings on Pres. Bush. Then another vote should be taken to repeal the Military Commisisions Act, as I think it's called, and another vote taken to repeal the Patriot Act.

That's for starters.

What a dispicable shit bird he is. Senator Crony needs to retire. I am thinking of sending money to his opponent. He is a blight on the land. And he can go to hell.

is it too late to give texas back to mexico?

If Cornyin is so bent out of shape about Moveon criticizing his boyfriend, Patraeus what does he think about admiral Fallon calling Patraeus a chicken-shit ass-kisser

"Now it's our Party: we bought it, we own it, and we're going to take it back."

Good idea.

Let's get your guys on record.

Will MoveOn return their testicles to them for a vote with the promise to return them by morning?

Will MoveOn keep their testicles and instruct them to block the vote?

Let's watch.

I say the latter.

Where was the outrage by Repugs when they
let their Swiftboaters smear John Kerry,
and regardless what you think of him, he did
volunteer and was a decorated veteran unlike
the nest of right wing chickenhawks in
Congress. If memory serves, there was some
very meek lip service by Repugs but basically
they let these sleazy outfits do their
damage. Our whole election process needs
to be thrown out and rebuilt again, a good
start would be putting a muzzle on these
groups on both sides.

Great. These loyal Republicans vote against Webb's bill supporting the troops. Now waste time with this nonsense. Petraeus is a political tool soldier, that much is very clear.

SMOKE and MIRRORS -- that's all the GOP has left.

The way John Kerry stood silent while the questioning student was accosted and electrocuted speaks volumes to what a peace of crap he is.

John you have ton's of money.influence and should not care who you leave on the bar room floor after the fight, just stand and speak the truth. Remember Vietnam? Don't try the I did not know what was going on BS its on film, you lose.

The Dems need to attach an amendment to this resolution requiring that Reps must now be required to take back everything their supporters have said about John Kerry and Jack Murtha, both distinguished members of Congress and decorated Veterans. Tit for tat...

I joined MoveOn.org because of the BetrayUs ad. RIGHT ON! MOVE ON! BetrayUs is a Bush mouthpiece. Did you see on the Daily Show, how they juxtaposed clips of Bush and BetrayUs saying the same thing word for word? Yet BetrayUs said he wasn't influenced by the White House?

This is a dumb move by Republicans. It will backfire in the largest way.

Do you think they are worried, over at MoveOn, that the most powerful individuals in the country have taken them on directly?
