MoveOn Vote: Clinton a "No," Obama a No-Show

Presidential hopeful and Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is claiming that he deliberately sat out a vote mounted by Senate Republicans to condemn the group MoveOn.org. Obama said that he was taking the high road by staying out of the GOP-driven fray over the group's "General Betray Us?" advertisement.

"The focus of the United States Senate should be on ending this war, not on criticizing newspaper advertisements," the senator said in a statement e-mailed to the Huffington Post. "This amendment was a stunt designed only to score cheap political points while what we should be doing is focusing on the deadly serious challenge we face in Iraq. ... By not casting a vote, I registered my protest against this empty politics."

Obama and Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) both missed the vote on a resolution sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) to condemn MoveOn for its advertisement last week that criticized Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of US forces in Iraq. The ad has been the focus of Republican attacks on Democrats in Congress for the past week.

The measure passed on a 72-25 vote. Obama had earlier voted in favor of an alternative motion sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) that criticized actions that question the honor of armed services members generally, and highlighted partisan attacks against former senator Max Cleland and Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), both Vietnam veterans. The Boxer measure failed to advance.

The Huffington Post is still awaiting a reply from Biden's office on how he would have voted on the measure if he had attended the vote.

Obama's main rival on the campaign trail, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), voted against the Cornyn measure. Her vote drew fire from Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor accused Clinton in a statement of siding "with the libelous left wing of her party."

Romney said, "The idea that she would be a credible commander-in-chief of our armed forces requires the willing suspension of disbelief."

Another Democratic presidential hopeful, Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT), also voted against the Cornyn measure, but he seemed to share some of Obama's sentiment.

"It is a sad day in the Senate when we spend hours debating an ad while our young people are dying in Iraq," Dodd said. "Now that the Senate has twice voted on this ad, it is time to move on and vote to end the war."

Obama is right. it's time to stop playing the republicans games and refuse to take part.
The senate is for dealing with our issues and not strawmen made up by the gop.
The dems keep playing along and going along with this idiocy and Obama is saying, no more.

He figured that out in the 20 minutes between the two votes?

Not exactly, lafrance.

Obama did vote FOR the equally stupid and repressive measure offered by Barbara Boxer that condemned any criticism of a member of the military. This is the same anti-MoveOn amendment in a slightly different package.

He then went on to offer praise of Patraeus.

He voted for the anti-free speech amendment before he didn't vote against the anti-free speech amendment.

Obama is playing the game.

What pisses you off more:

a) Congress spending time on this.
b) 22 Dems voting in favor.

I respect Clinton's no vote, but having read Obama's statement, I'm not trouble by what he did. He didn't vote in favor as some those traitorous Democrats who probably owe their seats to MoveOn in the 2006 election did.

You mean, at least Obama didn't vote "yes"?

But he did vote in favor of Boxer's bill - that was equally stupid. That way he could denounce criticism of Patraeus while at the same time promoting the illusion that he is above that sort of thing.

So, Obama voted before abstaining from voting, in protest. Huh?

I am a member of MoveOn.org, and am a patriotic American. I would also never lend my support to any organization which engaged in questionable or violent behavior. To sponsor peaceful demonstrations or place newspaper ads should not be against the law. I would also not support any ads which conveyed erroneous information. I happen to believe that Bush, Cheney and Petraeus have all betrayed us. With a matter of Iraq, a lousy economy, a housing market that's the worst it's been in decades, New Orleans in ruins, an administration which is stomping on our Constitutional rights, I am appalled that the Senate is using it's energy to condemn an ad. If we were still a free society, this would not be an issue. I heard a statement recently which is so true: we are not nearly so free anymore as we would like to believe. We have a Congress to protect us from rogue leadership. Sadly, it would appear that we now need protection from Congress, as well.

I am OFFENDED EVERY damn DAY by what REPUBLICANS do and have done! So what, MOVEON, PAID LOTS OF GOOD AMERICAN DOLLARS for that AD!

SO FRIGGIN WHAT?!!!!!!!

If I were HILLARY OR OBAMA, I'D GO RIGHT DOWN TO THE SENATE FLOOR AND TELL THEM TO KISS MY BUTT!!

GET OVER IT!!!!!!

So our troops get the shaft by more extended deployments and this ridiculous vote to try to shame MoveOn for an ad gets a vote. What kind of boobs would even show up for such nonsense.

Any one who has ever served in the military knows a General will not speak out against his Commander in Chief, the President. Unless he wants an early retirement that is.

After all of this I support MoveOn 100% and hope they take on the entire congress as a whole.

Someone take the time to ask the families our troops what they thought of this stupid, idiotic, display! I'm sure they would rather Congresses time being spent to the end this war and bring their loved ones home instead of this merry-go-round of deployment the GOP seems to want for them. God help us, please, this Congress is broken.

The Senate has voted 72-25 to condemn the MoveOn.org ad. Some of the Senators who won the greatest support from these fringe kook bloggers out there in the last election voted to condemn it. Claire McCaskill, Tester, Klobuchar, Jim Webb, they all voted to condemn it. Mrs. Clinton did not. Hillary Clinton voted against condemning the ad, and why not, it's her own organization.

In the end, the ad has damaged MoveOn.org much more than Petraeus. And it forced the group’s Democratic allies in Congress to be the ones who had to “Take a Stand” — to either denounce MoveOn.org’s slander, or tacitly endorse left-wing McCarthyism.

This confirms the adage that when Democrats form a firing squad they stand in a circle.

Oops! I forgot it is expressly forbidden in the Constitution to criticize a member of the Armed Services...not!! Remember, this General promised truth and candor in his report. He gave us neither. What are we to do...bow our heads, kiss his ass, and politely fade away?

Also, logically speaking, it is common practice to criticize the Commander-in-Chief and this General reports to the Chief...ergo??

Kbar..you have just proved that you are the biggest Pu**Y on the board tonight. Yes, we will keep up the good work..as said above, keep pushing the buttons. I read some wingnut on this board saying that this would be the end for the democrats and the tide would turn toward Bush. He was wrong. At best it made no difference to how people feel about the REAL issue. Actually the polls note that the support actually dropped some(within the margin of error). The radical republicans are getting a woody over this while the rest of the country just says "there they go again".

Fabulous for Hillary to stand up and put her beliefs on record. Every single one, even the unpopular ones.

Unlike Obama.

HuffPo's hilarious. The Obama jiz fest here on this site is hilarious. They're patting his back for this or saying, "Who cares! Let's talk about something else!!!" LOL.

Love it.

Obama went on the record as opposing the Iraq War from the start and Hillary was busy pimping for Bush. What unpopular vote has Clinton cast a nay for? She votes for whom or what her pollsters tell her to.

It's Hillary that's been given a free pass so far by the MSM. No one calls her on her BS about somehow being more experienced than Obama...just as an example. If you count her years of picking China patterns as first lady then, yes, she is extremely qualified to run for president. But while she couldn't decide between the gold-rimmed or the presidential seal plates Obama was passing ethics reform in Illinois, getting health care for poor kids, and stopping capital punishment when it was showed that more than 15 people were wrongly convicted of murder. He was standing up for his beliefs and putting them on record when Hillary was holding tea parties on the South lawn.

So is Obama. He's got one good vote under his belt, the rest have been identical to Hillary's on the war or, with this one, doesn't want to go on record. VERY big of him. Principled one would say.

It's his job to vote, that's what he does.

Now moveon.org needs to run a two page spread with the picture of every member of congress voting yes or not voting on this ridiculous measure and have the headline read:

"Traitors to the Constitution"

For attacking the peoples right to free speech! And not acting on the will of the people every time a war ending measure is up and acting on their political affiliations instead.

It seems we have their attention, maybe we should keep pushing buttons!

I'll donate to that ad! I'm sick of dumb ass Demublicans who don't know what party they belong to.

MoveOn took a survey about whether it should fund challengers to contest the seats of so-called Democrats who support Bush, not our troops, and who vote for stupidity such as this. I say do it and I'm happy to fund raise for it.

AT LAST! Go Hillary!!! All but 25 who voted against the stupid resolution are either Repugs or invertabrate Democrats!!

Yes, GO HILLARY...keep wasting time voting on stupid, meaningless bills while our troops are dying in someone else's civil war...You go GIRL! Sheesh. Voting NO on this didn't take "balls." Saying you're above this petty BS shows the real cahones

I have to agree with you MarkieBee. My first reaction was favorable to Hillary. Now I think Obama showed true leadership. He didn't play into this attempt to divide the party for absolutely nothing. All Dems should have walked away instead of forcing members like me to vent anger by making a big fat donation to Moveon.org in hopes that the next ad bitch slaps Congress.

I hope each one of the Senators who voted to condemn MoveOn's constitutional right remember that their spur of the moment, if not a grandstanding moment is on record and will be a huge problem for them when they need to return to the public and convince them that they are doing the job that they were elected to do.
Anyway, let me thank each one of the Senators and even Mr Bush for keeping our name front a center and allowing us to reach people who may never have heard of us.

There is no issue more important then to getting the troops the hell out of Iraq. Bush war for oil isnt worth it. The fight should be in afganistan and pakistan not Iraq.

He didn't sit out the vote, he was on a plane to attend a very important HUGE rally in Atlanta that's been scheduled for months. Is he supposed to vote on a meaningless bill in the senate and disappoint thousands of his supporters? Hillary's big fundraiser was last night when she played matchmaker between lobbyists and fellow congressional members so she could afford to hang around and cast votes for meaningless, toothless bills.
