The Cubans in Cuba who are not members of the Communist Party have to scrounge around for the basic necessities. Most staples are rationed including sugar and tabacco, which are two of its major exports.
If a Cuban is lucky to have relatives in the United States, these relatives send food, clothing, household items, and dollars to Cuba. The Cuban government takes these dollar remittances by allowing the Cuban citizens to shop in state run "dollar stores" which sell needed items at a high mark-up averaging 240% over face value. The government makes a substantial profit from these transactions.
Cuba has been sited for human rights violations. Freedom of speech is allowed at their own peril. The government controls the press. The government also restricts freedom of religion. Due process is routinely denied to its citizens.
Many Cubans find this tyrannical government so oppressive that they risk their lives by leaving Cuba on rafts hoping that the currents take them to the United States.
No government is perfect, but some are better than others. And as imperfect as our government is, ours is one of the better ones.
On the plus side the Cubans do have univeral health care.

Did you know Cuba offered to send more than 1500 fully-equipped doctors trained in disaster relief to the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina and Bush turned them down? I guess you feel Bush did the right thing. The Cubans were "commies." It would be better to suffer and die than to receive medical care from a commie, wouldn't it? Survivors of the hurricane shouldn't have a chance to decide for themselves whether to accept help from Cubans, right? Only Bush has the right to make a decision like that.

You are right some places are hellish. Take a ghetto in America. Wow that stinks Maybe Jena. whose is free there. I have been in communist countries. What I saw in China was incredible progress. And I could ask questions I would be afraid to ask in America. And you don't need an inner tube to get to Cuba. Just buy an aiplane ticket. Of course you have to go via a different country but hey that's American freedom for you. And for your information - Castro opened the jails and the insane asylums. I know that. A friend was interviewing the refugees. Yesiree - lots of good stuff in Cuba that just ain't in America. They may not be rich and they may have to keep their mouths shut about some things but they live and would do a lot better but for the vindictive embargo against Cuba because it is communist and not against China because well I really don't know why. I only know China is communist and it pretty well can sink the US any time it wants to sell its US bonds. Funny thing how now that the wall is down American companies have run away to use almost slave labour, no unions and way of making money by ignoring all environmental controls. It does seem to me that I read about the v.pv. of Mattel kowtowing and accepting the blame for the toxic toys produced in China and sold in America for a huge profit for Mattel.
