A lightning rod for international criticism, the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, not long ago appeared headed for closure. President Bush and his top advisors said they wanted to shutter the controversial lockup.

But the latest attempt to shut it down is facing collapse: The detention facility has been embraced by many Republicans as a potent political symbol in their quest to seize the terrorism issue ahead of next year's elections...

..."It's a Republican litmus test this year," complained Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, one of the few GOP lawmakers calling for the swift closure of Guantanamo.

"The Republican Party has won two elections on the issue of fear and terrorism," Hagel said. "[It's] going to try again."

That's assuming they "Won" them to begin with- still askeptic. But the Dems aren't much better. They still think we need to be proactive against possible threats and have failed to realize that aggression does not bring true resolution.
Nobody has it wrapped up IMHO.I'm looking for the "team" and I want retribution for all crimes against US and around the world. We have allowed an Profiteering Regime run our foriegn and domestic policies for too many years (Military/ industrial/Political complex )has been eating away at our country for decades. Let's wipe the slate clean of this evil entity. Ask the UN to proceed w/ charges of War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity on this Admin & all who supported them with votes. Then perhaps we can take back our right to Impeach a President ( along with all the other rights they have been raping). The New World Order is over and the One World is dawning. Let's show what a True Democracy can do and is willing to do to improve the world and the future. Defeat our enemies and detractors with our actions- show them the real light - not these meglomaniacs version.

Hagel is a dirty, dirty politician.

Senator Hagel's Perfect Timing

Hagel sits on the Board of Directors of a holding company called McCarthy Group. They claim to be an investment firm with a diverse portfolio upwards of 1 billion dollars. Anyways, here is the kicker.

McCarthy Group owns ES & S and Diebold. Both highly controversial Evoting machines. I believe he also was one of their CEO's when they were just starting. Even more damning both those companies were created by 2 brothers who are heavy GOP supporters. Oh...all of these companies either started in or currently based out of Omaha, NE.

Please read on.

Wow, who would have thunk it? The GOP running on terror and fear. Sad thing is that it would seem many in America are terrorized and fearful. Gosh, is it going to work for them again or is the majority of American going to wake up. When will the 67% of America that disagrees with Bush going to stand up to the 33% that are blind. Maybe never!

This is Bullshit... it wasn't fear by voters that elected Bush/Cheney.. it was vote fraud using "fixed" computer voting machines, purging of voter lists, jamming phone lines, an antiquated Electoral College system that failed to accurately reflect the national popular will, a corporate media that failed to report truth about the candidates, and the Supreme Court which by their intervention deprived voters of their rights to a fair election. And let's not forget that in 2004 Kerry threw in the towel in OHIO, when he should have put up a fight - a bizarre self-inflicted "Swiftboating" wound - that guaranteed in would lose the general election. (Was this staged?).

The repubs? Use fear and terror to win an election? Nah, they wouldn't do that. Certainly not a third time. Come on, they're the compassionate conservatives.

NOT

The fear and terror that the Neocon Repubs will use for 2008 is the FIRESTORM we will be engulfed is as we burn alive in the middle east after our attack on Iran in the next several months. It's their perfect plan though we can't talk about it much because Dershowitz and Krystol will jump up and start screaming we're 'antisemitism'

Can you believe these madmen? As reported today - Cheney - in cahoots with the Israelis - are thinking about goading Iran into RETALIATION for an Israeli attack.

Why worry about Ahmadinejad being mad? - Cheney and these other Neocons are far crazier and more dangerous. We need another war all right - we need a 'The War against the Neocons', a war against the right wing Likudnik-bought US Congress, a war against these bastards who have destroyed America and made us all facists for Israel in order for it to be able to get away with it's theft of Palestine.

Well - guess what? - Israel isn't WORTH THAT. Let THEM pay the piper for their 60 year genocide of the Palestinians - or alternatively come to a peace agreement in accord with the UN Sec Council Resolutions 242 and 338 and the Geneva Convention articles and International law they are in violation of. If not - our next war in the middle east should be to beat the Israelis back behind the 1967 borders and thereby end this bogus war on terror. If there is another country the US attacks in the ME it needs to be with a coaliton of the willing and needs to be on Tel Aviv instead of Tehran.

It just isn't funny any more to destroy the world, to pull the entire world inside-out and backwards thru Israel's orifice, in order to permit Israeli to continue stealing Palestine.

If we do go ahead and try to bait Iran in a 'false flag operation' - let's just paint Air Force One 'UN Blue' and send Bush and Cheney on a flight over Iran - perhaps then we can concentrate on taking care of global warming instead of facist Israelis

You know what's really sad?

After what the war-loving, blood-bath happy, torture-hungry crowd has done to the Middle East, I'll bet it's not shameful anywhere in the world to be anti-American. In fact, it's now cheered. We, as American citizens, are not safe to travel abroad for fear that someone will know where we're from!

That's what they've done to us and those who voted for them enabled it to happen.

We should ALL be ashamed to be Americans now -aren't you? Your fellow Americans are cowards, complicit, and compliant to their Neocon and Israeli masters. Your fellow Americans are fascists
Immediately after 911 Bush told us that the attack WASN'T about our criminal support Israel's violation of the UN Sec Council Resolutions 242 and 338; that it WASN'T about our repeated 'Vetoes for Israel' in the UN (along with scattered atolls out in the Pacific that are dependent upon us for foreign aid) that have perverted the Middle East for 60 years; that it WASN'T about our support for the House of Saud and the Egyptian dictators. No - it was about NONE of that according to Bush. In fact, it was about nothing, and that nothing changed everything.

We accepted this fascist police state because Israel, AIPAC, and the Neocons have destroyed any debate, completely OWN our Congress, and destroy the careers of any media that says boo to Israel. We accepted this facist police state and because we accepted it we now DESERVE IT

I borrow a quote:

The Bush-Cheney administration has surrendered much of Afghanistan to the Taliban and much of Pakistan to al-Qaida. They have turned most of Iraq over to Iran, creating the very danger over which they now threaten another disastrous war; they have strained the U.S. Armed Forces to the point of exhaustion, turned the Defense Department over to private contractors, the Justice Department over to the Republican National Committee, and the national debt over to foreign creditors, while leading a party whose single most basic belief is supposed to be that individuals must take personal responsibility for their actions. And they dare to lecture us on national security?

Hagel is writing a book.

Can't you HuffPoers see that you're being played?

He's going to make "contrarian" statements to drum up interest in his book.

It'll make a nice bonus for his retirement to go with his ample Congressional pension.

So what? I'll buy the book. I need a new weight for making eggplant parmesan. The old one ("The Great War for Civilization" by Robert Fisk) accidentally fell into a boiling pot of spaghetti. I tried using a hair dryer, but no joy.

I'll buy it. I want to hear what else the man has to say--he strikes me as very knowledgeable and honest, especially when it comes to foreign policy.

What's truly sad is that Hagel knew that in order to speak his mind and to be able to tell the truth,he would have to announce his retirement from the Senate.

Ahmadinejad and Bush have astonishing similar approaches to their persusaion: Establish threat; contruct the strawman; and attack, attack, attack. I think they could be good friends under different circumstances.

As I recall, Bush and Rice's statements about Gitmo were something like EVENTUALLY we would like to close Gitmo....in real terms that meant one day, far far away...not anytime soon!

Did anyone really think Bush would close it soon????

Give me a break!
