Burma's military rulers last night threatened to "take action' after up to 100,000 demonstrators protesting against the regime flooded the streets of Rangoon in the biggest show of dissent in almost two decades.

Tens of thousands of Buddhist monks and pink-robed nuns led the marchers who snaked for nearly a mile through the former capital, one of several marches that slowed traffic to a crawl and prompted the closure of shops and schools.

What is happening in Myanmar is a harbinger of what will happen in the US if Cheney is successful in pulling off a coup.

And he will be.

He has his own private army, Blackwater. Congress has been neutered. The Courts are in his back pocket. And he has the Emergency Powers signing docs to give the prez (him) all powers in the event of a national emergency -- like a phoney terrorist threat or the invasion of Iran.

Besides, George is anxious to get back to Crawford, so what's to stop him?

Indeed he has created a new role for the vice-president, however, I don't think he could pull off a coup as you suggest.

The majority of the populous wouldn't stand for it. I would even wager Toby Keith would kiss and make up with the Dixie Chicks and then proceed to throw rocks at him if he tried to pull a stunt like that.

He may be Darth Vader to some people, but his empire is mainly on paper. He'll cash in after this round and go to the beach when Miss Thing or Uncle Al win next year.

These monks have a lot more courage than Americans. It was the monks in Vietnam that lead to the end of the Diem regime who was murdered in a coup, with the help of the CIA.

this movie about the famous Tibetan Buddhist yogi-saint Milarepa just came out in theaters.

it is about suffering under cruelty and corruption, revenge, and how revenge accomplishes nothing, and how the path of enlightenment lies another way.

I just noticed how the structure of Milarepa the Movie (Part one) is patterned after the four noble truths:

suffering, it's cause, it's cessation, and the path

Thank you SO much for linking that film site. I had no idea it had even been made. The story of Milarepa is amazing.

As to Myanmar, if China was not having the Olympics coming up soon in Beijing, I would imagine that it would not advise any restraint by the Junta.

The Communist regime of the People's Republic of China has absolutely no compunction about killing monks or religious people. They've nearly destroyed the Buddhist civilization of Tibet, and would not flinch if the Myanmar junta decided on the wholesale slaughter of the protesting monks.

They wouldn't flinch that is if there were not billions of dollars pending on a smooth and successful Olympics. Since they are close trading partners with Myanmar, of course they will tell them to play nice so long as the prospect of money is to be made.

I think people forget just how truly evil and harsh the Communist government of China can be. Beneath the veneer of Western capitalism lurks a totalitarian state on the ascendant. Perhaps in the future, the descendants of George Bush will kowtow to the new Son of Heaven.

Regardless, I wish the people of Myanmar good karma in their peaceful dissent. And I especially send my best thoughts to the monks who are the apparent catalyst.

Are you referring to the Bush administration or to Myanmar?

The whole USA has been watching our civil liberties get violated, so we're no help to anyone else as passive witnesses.

If we watch and do nothing about Bush, what good is it for us to be watching these monks?

First deal with the Junta in your own country, then you might be a credible witness and an ally to the oppressed peoples of other countries.

PaulGaskin, I was referring to Burma. You sound like you are not an American and you seem to feel free to Hector all Americans. Many of us have been struggling for years by peaceful means to change the tide in our country and we can see the beging of change today. Are you one of those people who feels free to call on others to make very costly sacrifices, while you are free from joining in that sacrifice? I know what it is to pay the price of my convictions, but I am not interested in being a martyr. What is happening in Burma is beautiful and fraught with the peril of bloody results. Revolution is serious and painful and anyone who points the way without being willing to join the march loses my respect. My reference to the whole world watching was a recall of Chicago in 1968.

Thank you Mr. Bush for proposing additional sanctions on the dictators in Burma.

Suu Kyi has been asking for additional sanctions. She needs all the outside support she can get.

Bush can't support anything. Any well-intentioned action he takes is detrimental to the cause. The Buddhists of Mayanmar/Burma are better off without his support.

Thanks huffpo for covering this topic. Burma needs the world to focus on them and apply some pressure.

A beautiful people's revolution is happening live as we wage war in Iraq and beat the drums for Iran.

If our media stay focused on this it will decrease the chance of a violent attack on their people by the ruling military junta in Burma.

More coverage of this story would be nice. The BBC and much of the civilized world is watching closely with concern and hope. We are here jumping up and down like apes with clubs getting ready for Iran.

This beautiful peaceful Buddhist protest should be an inspiration to peaceful people everywhere.

namaste.

Your post is very thought provoking, as is the article.

But there's just one thing.

Burma no longer exists.

It's Myanmar now.
