2007-09-27-gop.jpgAn endorsement in California. Fundraising dinners. An 'Exchange of Ideas' with a former Reagan speechwriter. The four Republican frontrunners chose these events over tonight's forum in front of African-American voters at Baltimore's Morgan State University.

The top GOP candidates have been widely criticized for snubbing the event tonight, with even President Bush advising the eventual nominee "to reach out to the African American community."

Despite several months notice, Republicans have cited scheduling conflicts to justify skipping Morgan State forum, which was first announced in March. Staff and fundraisers from all four campaigns failed to respond to Huffington Post inquiries today asking when the events they are attending today were first planned.

One GOP candidate might even be digging himself a deeper hole with minority voters.

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is in California today, raising money and accepting the endorsement of former GOP governor Pete Wilson. The AP noted it was a "mixed blessing" for Giuliani "due to Wilson's hardline stand on illegal immigration," which was credited for "driving Hispanics from the GOP in California."

Sen. John McCain will be in New York City tonight, appearing in an "Exchange of Ideas" campaign event with top Reagan White House speechwriter Peggy Noonan.

Ex-senator Fred Thompson is at home in Tennessee tonight where he is also raising money.

Like Giuliani, former governor Mitt Romney is in California for a San Diego fundraiser. He defended his choice to sit out the Morgan State forum to the Christian Broadcasting Network's David Brody, saying he's forced to turn down some debate invitations "because you've got to raise the money, and you've got to do the grassroots work."

Romney blamed the media for generating too much attention to the issue. "Of course we care about minority voters. We're not entirely brain dead. We want people in the entire country to vote for us -- Hispanic voters, African-American voters -- we all want them in the primary and in the general."

"GOP ditches black voters' forum for fundraisers."
Ahhh duh. Is this news to anyone? The GOP hasn't been interested in black issues since Abraham Lincoln was President.

Sorry, but I think President Eisenhower's support of Brown v. Board of Education and federalizing the National Guard in protecting the rights of the Little Rock Nine may have been the last Republican to protect the rights of minorities. And lets not forget that is was southern Dems, that were on the other side.

This just gives more credence to the fact that many Republicans are bigoted, racist haters. Their party is firmly identified as such.

Factually, even with my Republican background and commitment to Christian values, give me someone who is not shy to teach tolerance about gays as opposed to accepting people trying to win my vote all the while snubbing minorities. This skipping a minority event is not new for these Republicans. Remember the Spanish TV debate? In terms of values, dissing minorities is very high on lists of behavior to avoid. Anti Christian entirely. Just political sense would have told Romney he needs to be there with the history of how his church has treated Blacks.

Make your voice count, shame on them. Always ask yourself who owns the Lobby system, and where more emphasis needs to be put going forward to get your rights.

Who do you think won the All American Presidential forum debate at Baltimore's Morgan State University? ----> http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=604

Damn Witchitalineman, you just gave me chills. It that picture doesn't say it all.

I'm glad none of them showed up for the debate and have finally revealed to all and sundry who and what they really are.

...And yet not one GOP showed up for the Logo sponsored debate for the GLBT community. The GOP certainly looks like a group of self-serving bigots. Can anyone prove that they are not?

Traditionally blacks and gays don't vote for republicans. Why is that so hard to understand?
Cows don't buy leather coats, so why try to sell them one. The word bigot is used quite frequently on this site. Sadly, if this site is reprehensive of the left, I"d say bigot might be the appropriate word to describe the left that post here. This is perhaps the most hateful site I"ve ever checked out.

Traditionally blacks and gays are part of the citizenship of this country. The idea is that you're President of *all* Americans and not just the ones who voted for you.

"This is perhaps the most hateful site I've ever checked out."

You really need to get out more.

First of all, this site might be 'representative' of the left (I'm not even sure about that), but I'm pretty sure it's not 'reprehensive' of the left either, brainiac. But you're right...blacks and gays don't traditionally vote for Republicans, and anyone with half a brain can see why. Maybe if some of these Republicans actually attended their forums and heard their concerns they might stand a chance of getting black votes. But don't blame blacks for being ignored by Republicans. As far as cows buying leather coats...WTF?!?

They made the decision not to go before O'Reilly ate at Sylvia's and found it the same as White restaurants. If they had heard O'Reilly BEFORE they refused to attend the event, they would have gone. But they thought the questions would include alot of "m-----f-----s" and the audience would be begging while a huge woman would drive into the debate with the latest Cadillac, pushing for a higher welfare allowance. O'Reilly should have gone to Sylvia's a couple of months ago.

They all make me sick. I especially loathe Rudy G. I am a NYC resident. I was one at the time of 9/11. He is a gross pig. I can't believe he allowed Fund Raisers to name a money making event 9/11.
Who can forget his words during the republican Convention, "As we were being attacked, the first thing I thought was THANK GOD GEORGE BUSH IS OUR PRESIDENT" Yah, sure pal. People were throwing themselves out of buildings to avoid being burned to death. He probably thought "Get me outta here" he was a rotten mayor before 9/11 and remained one after 9/11.

I guess Rudy was too busy with his $9.11 fundraiser to show.

He obviously cares about engaging in serious debate with people of color . . . much the same way he would NEVER exploit a national tragedy for personal benefit or political gain.

Wow, how far has our illusion of democracy come. These Republican candidates blatantly ignore significant portions of the voting population in order to raise funds. I guess this really is the best democracy money can buy, I hope we don't actually believe these candidates will pursue our interest when elected regardless of your race (just send the check buddy). Is this the democracy we are trying to export to Iraq???

Hmmm... The choices are:

1) Go to fund raisers to bolster my war chest.

2) Go pander to people that vote for Dems no matter what I say.

Sounds to me that they made the right choice.

Well, I don't know.

McCain's black daughter would certainly vote for her father, right?

Oh, wait . . . McCain doesn't have a black daughter. THAT WAS A LIE TOLD BY THE BUSH CAMPAIGN BEFORE THE 2000 SOUTH CAROLINA PRIMARY TO DISCOURAGE THOSE BOB JONES UNIVERSITY LOVIN', CONFEDERATE FLAG WAVIN', HOUND-DOG PETTIN,' GOOD OL' BOYS AND GIRLS NOT TO VOTE FOR JOHN McCAIN.

AND GUESS WHAT? IT WORKED!

Guess you're right: he's better off spending his time pandering to people who will vote GOP.

McCain and his wife adopted a girl from one of Mother Theresa's orphanages in Bangladesh. I stood next to her once backstage in the 2000 primary in NH. She said to Mrs. McCain, "When's Daddy going to get here?"

Rove started a whispering campaign that she was his illegitimate love child.

Despicable.

I am no longer a McCain fan, but to disparage the guy's daughter is despicable.
