Irish rocker and activist Bono, accepting the Liberty Medal on Thursday night for his humanitarian work in Africa, exhorted Americans to keep working to solve the world's problems and spoke of those who are without freedom.

"When you are trapped by poverty, you are not free. When trade laws prevent you from selling the food you grew, you are not free," said Bono, wearing his trademark sunglasses even at night as he stood just steps away from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

Whether coming from the dumbocrats or the dumbpublicans, big government is crushing liberty. And that is sad.

A liberty medal presented by Bush is like a chastity belt presented by Paris Hilton.

The only tune Bono is singing these days, is one that only the world leaders, are ready to dance to.

But luckily for him he's an Irish citizen. So when things get REALLY bad here he can always escape to sanity. But he does good stuff. So I won't hold that against him.

It's amazing how time seems to heal all wounds. John Dean and Ashcroft are the voices of reason du jour. Bush senior doesn't seem so stupid, compared to his progeny. Bill Clinton's infidelities pale as time goes by as people realize how better off they were in the 90's...

My guess is: our current resident of the white house will not enjoy the same fate. 10 years from now, he will still be the C-student, dry drunk, military deserter, poor businessman, arrogant, ignorant, lying sack of shit everyone thinks he is today. Just a guess......

Hey BONEHEAD BONO- that creepy guy applauding you murdered JFK. So much for your vaunted "awareness" factor. What a fugazi.

unfortunately, Anastasia, WE THE PEOPLE of America will live with the stain of W for centuries.
Just as the German people have carried the weight and the guilt of Hitler, WE will bear the distain of the rest of the world due to the acts of W long after he is put out to pasture.

Bono is a great guy but if I were him, I'd put an "asterisk" on that medal (considering who it came from). A "Medal of Freedom" , from a Bush --- how funny is that!

Topic: "The Americans"

The United States dollar took another pounding on German, French and British exchanges this morning, hitting the lowest point ever known in West Germany. It has declined there by 41% since 1971 and this Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least-appreciated people in all the earth.

As long as sixty years ago, when I first started to read newspapers, I read of floods on the Yellow River and the Yangtze. Who rushed in with men and money to help? The Americans did.

They have helped control floods on the Nile, the Amazon, the Ganges and the Niger. Today, the rich bottom land of the Misssissippi is under water and no foreign land has sent a dollar to help. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy, were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of those countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When the franc was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When distant cities are hit by earthquakes, it is the United States that hurries into help...

Managua Nicaragua is one of the most recent examples. So far this spring, 59 American communities have been flattened by tornadoes. Nobody has helped.

The Marshall Plan .. the Truman Policy .. all pumped billions upon billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now, newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent war-mongering Americans.

I'd like to see one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplanes.

Come on... let's hear it! Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tristar or the Douglas 107? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all international lines except Russia fly American planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or women on the moon?

You talk about Japanese technocracy and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy and you find men on the moon, not once, but several times ... and safely home again. You talk about scandals and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everyone to look at. Even the draft dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, most of them ... unless they are breaking Canadian laws .. are getting American dollars from Ma and Pa at home to spend here.

When the Americans get out of this bind ... as they will... who could blame them if they said 'the hell with the rest of the world'. Let someone else buy the Israel bonds, Let someone else build or repair foreign dams or design foreign buildings that won't shake apart in earthquakes.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name to you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble.

Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbours have faced it alone and I am one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles.

I hope Canada is not one of these. But there are many smug, self-righteous Canadians. And finally, the American Red Cross was told at its 48th Annual meeting in New Orleans this morning that it was broke.

This year's disasters .. with the year less than half-over¦ has taken it all and nobody...but nobody... has helped.

This is sickening!! The stupid, political, uneducated comments on this blog are a perfect parallel to the state of our world. I going to generalize a little, but this "political cult" that is represented here is amazing. If I stated that the sky was blue, by the third comment people would state it was Bush's fault, America's failure, and we need to change it before it kills us all. (Maybe we can make it green? It would be more environmentally friendly)

It is sometimes and perhaps liberals like me are adding to your disappointment. You're right - it's hypersensitive in here - but the dialog needs to happen.

Hey - I may be the dumbest of the dumb as far as posters, but I would hate to see you go or not argue a sensible point because of a label. Reasoned conversations are precisely what is missing from our legislature. Here at least - after the fog lifts, or if one has to wade through highly partisan defenses - there is the opportunity for actual dialog.

So don't be discouraged. Stick around. Even if we don't necessarily agree - perhaps we can still make what's left of our freedom meaningful.

Bono use to have my respect for what he was doing. But now he has been sucked into the greed and power euphoria of the republican train. He has sold his soul to the devil, to make an appearance of helping those who need help. There are millions here in the US and England who are stuck in poverty, you dont see Bono stomping and screaming over that. There are millions in the US without health care, dying and sick. You dont see Bono going on about that. But if it will help bring another large cheap labor source healthy enough to work for pennies an hour and make capitalist and republicans more money, He is there screaming and pounding his fist.
In countries were change could be made quickly , like the US and England, Bono isnt there. But for the long haul, on a continent that offers natural resources to rape, cheap labor to exploit, Bono is there.

Some people here forgot how Bono used to call the WH at the end of just about every concert he did in the early 90s to try to get a message out about his causes. Bono isn't afraid to use his celebrity not for pol's photo ops but to get any of his agenda realized. He sees this as a two-way street. He put the practicality of accomplishing something ahead of partisanship -- even to the point of making nice with HW Bu$h despite the fact that he may recognize who he's dealing with. But he's not trying to change the West's political process. Maybe that does seem shortsighted, to say the least. Maybe he thinks it's up to US to take back our democracy...

Bono = bonehead whose idea is outdated.

Where's he been in the last 10 years? Fluffing up his idea of himself as a hero. Unfortunately, he seems to do this by being obsequious to all the criminals who are the problems: the pope, Bush, G8 leaders et al...

He's either a naivete or has an inflated ego. Either way, he give the monstrous slimeballs of the world free PR. They can rub off a bit of their surface stink by seeming to listen to him in endless photo ops.

That's why they're showering him with awards!
