Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominees Revealed

Madonna, the Beastie Boys, John Mellencamp and Leonard Cohen lead a wildly disparate class of nominees for 2008 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

They join Afrika Bambaataa, Chic, the Ventures, Donna Summer and the Dave Clark Five on the ballot. Five acts will be inducted March 10, 2008, at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

Hey, it's only rock n roll. It's difficult to be a musical purist after drinking 24 bottles of beer for lunch as they do in Cleveland, Ohio, the mistake by the lake. If Madonna appears to accept the award the Cayahoga [sic] river will start to burn again if that wonderful milf gets to Cleveland. Madonna TOTALLY deserves to get in. She is critically acclaimed universally.

Pop is just Pop my dear audiophile. Bing Crosby was the epitome of Pop, way before "Rock and Roll" drew it's first wheezy breath. All Madonna deserves is a silver disco ball, and I won't mention where. She is critically assailed universally too.

She IS universally critically acclaimed. Go to acclaimedartists.org or .net. It is a comprehensive site of ALL music critics. Madonna is the 3rd highest acclaimed female of ANY genre, behind only Joni Mitchell and Aretha Franklin I believe. Madonna will get in, first ballot. Eat it. Pop is rock. 3 of her last 4 CD's (Ray of Light, Music and American Life) were heavy on guitar to boot.

NONE of these groups deserve to be called Rock & Rollers, except maybe the Dave Clark Five, one of the British Invasions' biggest guns. I like John Mellencamp, but he's pure country at the root. The Beastie Boys? That's so ridiculous as to be totally irrelevant to Rock as a genre on any level. Somehow Leonard Cohen fits the bill. He's always been a total iconoclast, the very definition of a Rocker. Bambaataa's presence is Political Correctness gone crazy. What teens bought his LP's? Maybe in Ghana. Chic? Rock? Hahahahahaa. Now that's REALLY A STRETCH. Donna Summer? Just when ARE the Disco Awards? This is all living proof that the authoriities, appalled at the dominance and social revolution associated with Rock back in it's heyday in the 60's, decide to neuter it impotent. But how? How about incorporating almost every other style of music under the 'Rock' umbrella. They replaced 'Pop' with 'Rock', a semantical solution to their little problem of defining reality for the rest of us. But only if you let them. Long Live Rock & Roll. Disco sucked then and still sucks now, whatever you call it. If Chic is Rock, what the hell is Gene Vincent?

Wait, wait, wait. Donna Summer is NOT simply a 'disco' artist. She's managed 24 Gold and Platinum records, she's the only artist EVER to have THREE double albums IN-A-ROW to reach # 1 on the Billboard Chart - and is recognized throughout the Rock-n-Roll community as a serious artist, capable of bucking trends and charting her own path. (She's also been nominated and won four Grammy's-all for different genre's of music.) In addition, she has written or co-written the bulk of her material, and has been covered by other artists who have turned her songs into hits. I have been waiting for the day when she was recognized for her contributions, it's about time! (She also has one of the more active catalogs of music, still in rotation on radio, and in sales. ) Sorry, just wanted to give Donna big "toot-toot, hey, beep-beep" (Grin...)

The RARHOF is a PRIVATE club who's members have sworn to never induct Rush for PERSONAL taste reasons only. The RARHOF is not a legitimate organization. They do not deserve the time of day. It's a club of friends in the industry who are SELF-IMPORTANT. These are proven facts. I wish someone would burn it down and make a REAL Hall of Fame. Why should a small group of people TELL US (the fans who PAY for tickets) who is nominated?
Paul Shaffer, (Dave Letterman's crony)has publicly said he will never allow Rush in the HOF because he personally does not like them. Rush fans have submitted a HUGE petition to the HOF which they ignore every yr. This is a desgrace!!­!!!!!!!!!!­!!!

Every year I laugh out loud when I see the list of so-called rockers. Was I dreaming in the 70's or weren't Chic and Donna Summer disco? Madonna? Who on earth is Afrika Babbaataa?? At least Mellancamp and The Ventures played rock! I guess bands like Jethro Tull could never rock as hard playing Locomotive Breath as Le Freak or Last Dance. Who picks these groups? There are MANY more worthy. Where are Yes? The Moody Blues? ELP? Rush? Kansas? The Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame is a joke plain and simple.

There isn't a single older rocker today who didn't learn their first hit WALK DON'T RUN on the guitar. In interviews back when most of the current lineup was getting started and earlier acts back to the first inductees, more than a few said the same thing, they all mention at one time or another learning how to play to The Ventures.

The other two are The Dave Clark Five and John Mellencamp.

The rest are just pop or rap acts and I have yet to figure out how they can be nominated. The naminating committee is actually starting to make a mockery of the entire thing.

They should start a pop and rap museum. Gee I wonder what would be in it?....Oh yeah, just about nothing.

Well Libsrule, you and I don't agree too much on politics, but I see our music tastes are pretty close.....­.So I will bring an opinion of mine up to you and you can either agree or rip me apart. I really somewhat a 'purist' when you use 'rock & roll'. I don't even believe the 'Mama's and Papa's' should be in the HOF. Far as I'm concerned they were 'folk and pop'.

Rockabilly? Cuz rock has it's roots firmly embedded in that genre.

Do Wop bands because although a lot of their top hits were sort of popish, live, a lot of them kicked ass on stage. I've seen some live film from then and boy o boy could those guys rock out. There were R'n'B bands that put on a hell of a rockin' show even though there hit(s) were a lot tamer.

But I do know that Madonna, rap and folk don't belong there.


I also want to know why TEN YEARS AFTER FOGHAT and UFO are not in that hall. Those guys ROCKED. There are a whole lot more, but I guess these days, it's current popularity that counts in terms of memory.

Too bad, cuz we're putting in people who don't even know how to rock.

While Leonard Cohen may be not be strictly rock and roll, when you look at who has been inducted so far, you'll see that the definition of R&R is quite wide. In this case, a folk rocker like LC is very deserving of his nomination. To my ears, he is in the top 5 songwriters of all time. Congratulations LC for the belated recognition!
