BBC:

Thousands of monks detained in Burma's main city of Rangoon will be sent to prisons in the far north of the country, sources have told the BBC.

About 4,000 monks have been rounded up in the past week as the military government has tried to stamp out pro-democracy protests.

As sorrowful as this is , its funny how this story is being used , even by Bush , as an a glaring example of "wrongs" being perpetrated by evil powers.

Bush used this to try and pander his way back into the graces of the UN (didn't work). The international community is all too wise to Bush , anymore.

They see the US in the same light for the wrongs being done in Guantanamo.

Change the heading of this post to say:

Thousands Of Shackled American Progressives Detained By Junta To Be "Sent Away."

..and you might very well be describing the future state of affairs in this country if "We The People" continue to bury our heads in the sand in denial about the creeping advance of fascism and totalitarianism of which the political agenda of Bush and the right-wingers appears to embody.

I was thinking the way of the peaceful warrior was the way it should be but turning the other cheek is getting so hard these days I speak of justice in an unjust world when they start killing monks
what if any thing can a peaceful warrior do
I ask why are goverments so afraid of there own people why is our goverment so afraid of her own people it just does not make sense spy on your people kill your own like in Burma keep lists on peaceful protesters has any one ever even heard of a quaker killing any one I know I haven,t what are they so afraid of
11:34 AM on 10/02/2007
May they all find enlightenment and peace. Such courage.

At least these people scarifice for what they believe. The same can't be said of Ameritards. They stand by and do nothing about their sinister administration.
11:26 AM on 10/02/2007
Generally American lard-ass mode of protest involves giving up on cheese on their hamburgers and posting half digested rip offs of other peoples ideas in posts devoid of historical understanding or sense of complex game that international relationships really are.
This is combined with overly inflated sense of self-worth and imperial pompousness makes for a really alarming reading. Before I started reading Huffpo I had a much better opinion of American liberal tradition.

Witness the idiotic idea of lousing up the next Olympics for the world.
As if international actions have no repercussions.
As if U.S. is all powerful and Chinese and the rest of the world would not find ways to retaliate in kind.
Didn't US do enough to present itself to the world as a ignorant bull in a china (pun intended) shop?

We must insist that China become involved immediately in this crisis situation along with the UN. NO participation in the Olympics and more severe sanctions down the line. God help the Burmese. Our family prays for you.

I agree. In order to stop the senseless murder of potentially thousands of innocent people we should cancel a sporting event.

-Or- maybe we need to check our sense of perspective here...

I know where you are coming from. These same people who are calling for action, boycotts, etc., etc., are the same people who SAID NOTHING when Clinton was signing all these one-sided trade treaties with China (in exchange for campaign donations). And why, because he's a democrat. And yeah, do you hear the media talking about Tibet? Its not the 'in-thing' as they say. Gay marriage is far more important as far as the liberal media is concerned.

Europe, Australia, USA & Canada should tell China we will boycott the Olympics unless they apply pressure on the regime in Myanmar. China is the ONLY country that can move Mynamar towards respecting human rights, which is truly sad given China's continuing genocide in Tibet. God bless the monks and people of Myanmar.

Unarmed protestors being carted away by the THOUSANDS.

Yet, in this country, as armed as we are, we can't even muster a decent protest against this unjust war.

What is the bravest nation on earth? Who are the bravest people on the planet at this moment? Note how the US just sits idly by to see what happens next.

Notice: Burma has no significant oil reserves for us to bother.

All you people want it both ways. You don't want us to sit idly by. Ok, as a VietNam vet I can tell you jungle warfare is no bargain. And Burma is probably 3/4th jungle. Also, aren't you folks always saying, "The US cannot always be the policeman of the world, let the UN do it"? Ok, so where is the UN on this? You same folks who are worried about the Monks (and I also for their safety) were quiet during the '90's when the Rwanda and Sudan genocides occurred, and its estimated maybe as many as 400,000 Iraqi babies perished due to our and the european sanctions. And why, because your guy was in the White House. So nobody raised any hell, including the liberal media. And you know I'm right.

I am so horrified by these events,I can only say that these monks, those that came before them and those that follow the path are the most courageous amongst us.

Patient endurance:
the foremost austerity.

Unbinding:
the foremost
so say the Awakened.

He who injures another
is no contemplatve.

He who mistreats another,
no monk.

Khanti,Khanti,Khanti

He endures- unangered-
insult,assault and imprisonment.
His army is strength,
his strength is forebearance;
he's what I call
a brahman.

Totalitarianism in the Twentieth Century brought shame to the human species in Spain, Italy, Germany, Russia, China and a host of other countries. And it is still true that the greatest failure of human affairs is its inability to manage its own affairs.
We have not been anointed to right all the injustices of the world. In fact, the attempt to exact justice against the small group of fanatics who committed evil against our citizens has still not been satisfactorily concluded, even as we find ourselves in the shifting sands of sacred lands of the second greatest religion in human history and the unconquered, forbidden territories of warring tribes. Both wars see no conclusion. Both wars are being funded by former enemies and fierce, unyielding economic competitors. Both wars have cost us 800 billion dollars in extra debt and the loss of our exceptionality as historical examples of personal and national integrity and honor as our soldiers and agents have been encouraged to indulge in barbaric behavior reminiscence of enemies we fought in the Twentieth Century.
Before we entertain another military adventure such as in Burma, we must conjointly bring together the best ideas to extricate ourselves from Iraq, Afghanistan, stop our disappearing industrial base and address our looming bankruptcy. Under our Constitutional system, if we continue to deadlock in addressing questions of national survival, most assuredly they will be solved by traditional leadership methods. Then you and I won't need to be openly carping about this and that. Such heresey will be forbidden, backed by the force of arms.

An article this morning's JAPAN TIMES,2.Oct say's
that the murdered Japanese journalist Kenji Nagai's
belongings returned to Japanese authorities,were
minus his camera.Maybe you saw the video of him
still filming after he was shot?
Although his body showed no burns or gunpowder
residue usually with point-blank shooting,
they believe it was at close range.
The Japanese government plans to do their own
autopsy and demanded the return of Nagai's
camera.
They might get it back but the film inside
will be long gone.
My point is,if this is how they deal with
the cold blooded execution of a foreign
national,we may never learn the full scale
of atrocities committed against their own
people.
Where are all those peacefull monks?
How many died?
How long must we wait before someone
takes a stand and say's ENOUGH?
02:47 AM on 10/02/2007
This is indeed an awful humanitarian event but socially engaged Buddhism is once again rearing it's head and it's about time! Bless all of the monks who stand so courageous for the benefit of all beings, especially those in Burma (Myanmar). Nammo tassa bhagavato arhato sammasambuddhasso. May all being be safe and well. Buddhism is such a philosophy of peace. They point an AK47 at these monks and they offer them a flower.

So what do you propose? I'm serious. Do you want us to send troops to Burma? That place is 3/4th malaria-infested jungle. So what do you propose?

Where is the UN? Where are they? You folks are always saying we can't be 'policeman of the world', let the UN do it. You are angry about a Japanese cameraman being murdered. So am I. However, when a Canadian lady reporter (of Iranian descent) a few years back was murdered by the Iranians where you folks all bent out-of-shape about that? I don't remember any of you being so. Or the Cuban dissidents thrown in jails without trials? I didn't hear no complaints then. I didn't even hear as many complaints when AMERICAN CITIZENS (such as American University professors in Lebanon, and Terry Anderson) were murdered overseas. Why? I didn't hear no calls for action...Just remember to take your malaria pill every morning if you want to go over and straighten out Burma.
12:06 PM on 10/02/2007
As a general rule, the louder people complain the less they have an idea of how to proceed.
09:38 PM on 10/02/2007
Steamboat.
I am angry about each and every injustice in
this world.Yes,I remember the story about the
Canadian reporter a few years back and I was
angry about that too.
The reason I mentioned the Japanese reporter
is because I live in Japan.
As for a solution to the oppression and
bloodshed all over this world,if I had one
I would maybe have a Nobel Peace Prize
sitting on my shelf, instead of photos of
my family.
However keeping these injustices in the spot
light and reminding polititians how strongly
we feel about them, might eventually get
through. As the people, that is maybe all the power
we yield.Sometimes it's enough.

LEARN THAT ALL RELIGIOUS DETERMINATIONS ARE NOT AS HEROIC AS THE BURMA RED ROBED FAITHFUL.
AND WHY ARE THERE (NOT) ANY 'SUICIDE BOMBERS'? THESE BURMA FREEDOM FOLKS ARE THE BRAVEST IN THE WORLD.
THE MERCINARY GENERALS WHOM DICTATE THIS HORRIBLE REGIME ARE ALL SUPREME COWARDS!!THEY WOULD RUN IN PANIC,IF ANY MILITARY FORCE DECIDED TO CRUSH THEM.
AND...THEY SHOULD ALL BURN IN THEIR 'BLOOD' OIL-HELL, JUST LIKE BUSH AND CHENY,THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE.
