Bush Officials Knew Of "Serious Structural Problems" At Utah Mine Before Cave-In

Bureau of Land Management inspectors noted serious structural problems at Utah's Crandall Canyon Mine at least three years before two roof collapses killed nine people in August, Congress was told Tuesday.

Yet the government's mine safety agency in another agency -- the Labor Department -- didn't know of the concerns about Crandall Canyon until after the accident, Kevin Stricklin, a coal mine safety and health administrator for Labor, told a Senate hearing on the accident.

The Labor Department had approved a plan to mine there.

There will be no trial during the Bush admin. They were complicit in the manslaughter. This way the business gets to point to the government being at fault, after all they certified its safety. Interestingly enough Bush's record on coal mine fatalities is on average lower than Clinton's. Face it bureaucracies on average suck as they are designed to function at the lowest common denominator. There will always be problems. But they are making incremental progress year after year.
