Weighing in again on the Don Imus controversy, the National Association of Black Journalists Tuesday said the radio personality who outraged many with his comments about "nappy-headed ho's" should not be allowed back on the air.

NABJ called reports that Imus is in negotiations with Citadel Broadcasting and Fox News "unimaginable."

"It seems inconceivable that less than a year after Imus was dismissed from CBS Radio and MSNBC for his vicious insults upon the Rutgers women's basketball team, that Citadel Broadcasting and Fox News would consider putting him back on the air," Ernie Suggs, NABJ's vice president of print said in a statement. Suggs is an enterprise reporter at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Hey, the great Jesse Jackson said Imus should be allowed to go back to work. Enough said. He called out the NABJ for their hypocrisy.

He's the perfect example. He has spoken at NABJ banquets despite the fact he made a racist and anti-semite remarks against jews in NYC (hymies in hymietown). The NABJ seems to have a different standard for his mistake then for Imus's mistake.

Imus paid his dues. I'm sure he is sorry, it not totally, at least a little bit. He may still have - whatever that was - in his heart, but I'm sure he'll keep it under wraps like everyone else does. I doubt he'll continue his over-the-top schtick.

This is about so much more than Imus. This is about Media Matters, National Association of Black Journalist, and National Association for Women being the major movers in the blitz to get Imus fired back in April, and now the same people coming forward to try and keep him off the air.

This is about censorship, this is about shutting down any voice that doesn't talk the talking points outlined by Hillary Clinton. (She just doesn't like to be called names). This is also about trying to control what I watch on tv and listen to the radio. The beat goes on, too, because these people are trying to shut down any opposing voices.

The people better take notice because our freedom is in jeopardy.

I am a female fan of Don Imus and fully support his return to the airwaves. I don't believe in blacklisting. And I don't believe in censorship.

It is way over the line to try to keep a man from working after a six-month exile.

If his freedom of speech and right to make a living is denied, then the precedent has been established to deny everybody elses rights as well. .......Beware of the 'new McCarthyism' and this time its coming from the far-left.

I am not a fan of Imus.
I have always thought he sounds stupid.

I think he has a right to say whatever stupid things he wants - and the way to express opposition is to not listen to his programs and not purchase products that his radio programs promote.

The comment by NABJ that Imus "used his free speech to broadcast hate speech" doesn't make sense to me.
This is the same rationale that people used to try to silence Malcolm X.

It is no challenge to us to simply support the right to free speech of those whose speech is considered agreeable.

Let him speak. Let some idiots pay big money for it.
Let us notice who is backing him and express our feelings by boycotting their products and their radio stations.

If the association name of "Black Journalists..." had been proposed by anybody white, or if white people segregated every profession into Black or White, we would never hear the end of the 'racist' accusations...What is the opinion of ALL journalists, collectively...IS there an opinion/consensus among ALL journalists or ALL radio talk show hosts/shock jocks? Let the man be judged by his PEERS, if he has to be judged at all. I am sick of Al Sharpton, et al, the endless dog and pony show...for all the times I've suffered through his/their commentary...I've yet to see anything constructive come of it...they show up for a news event, run their mouth, then move on to the next publicity stunt. Enough...just don't listen to what you don't like...there's more and more selection every day...the public audience has it's own way of censoring inappropriate dialogue, they JUST DON"T LISTEN! Remember free speech? Remember free market? Jesus, Mary, Joseph...drop it!

Put beautifully miss gold.

So the censor police knows what's best for you and me.

That does not swing in my (american ) party.

Women are a huge part of Imus"s audience and I keep reading (women don't watch Imus. That's a big lie.

Journalists and censorship. These two should not mix.

The Don Imus ranch spent 2.6 million on 100 kids last year for 16 weeks the ranch was open. That works out to $27,000 per child, or just under $3,000 per night for their typical nine-day stays. For the same amount, a child could stay in a top suite at New York's Waldorf Astoria or secure a cabin on the Queen Mary 2. According to its latest tax filings, the ranch's expenses totaled $2.6 million in 2003 and $2.7 million in 2002.
By comparison, Camp Starfish, another well-known kids charity, hosts over 150 kids a summer on a budget of $360,000 a year, according to tax filings. Actor Paul Newman's charity, The Hole in the Wall Gang Fund, has a budget that's more than twice as large as the Imus Ranch but hosts 10 times as many kids at its summer camp, its filing says. It also sponsors year-round programs.
See the con artist people are supporting.

Just because its a cattle ranch doesn't mean the children have to be treated like cattle.

The children who visit the the Ranch are seriously ill and require specialized medical care and attention including having doctors, nurses, EMTS and child life specialists available on a 24 hour basis. Neither the Waldorf Astoria nor the Queen Mary 2 is equipped to provide the level of care necessary.

This is a first rate facility, the children require and are entitled to and receive a high level of care and come away with a life time experience. This may in fact be the most meaningful experience of their lives away from their families in that 20% of these children eventually succumb to their diseases.

IR is a fully functional cattle ranch which operates 12 months a year. The highest paid employee of the ranch earns less then $60K per year. The $2.6M quoted roughly 1/3 is for depreciation of the facility which is non cash impacting, 1/3 is for the operation of the ranch - you can't have a cattle ranch w/o cattle, and 1/3 is spent on the children transportation, medical care, specialists, meals and programs.

Hole in the Wall provides services for 1,000 children at with expense of $6.5M and the IR provides services for 100 children at an expense of $850K. IR has expenses Hole in the Wall gang does not have given $8500 IR vs $6500 HWG per child IR is not out of line with the expense of the Hole in the Wall.

Radio Host Criticizes Report on Charity, New York Times March 25, 2005
"Mr. Imus criticized an article in The Journal ... that raised questions about financial controls and the personal use of a charity ranch he established in New Mexico for critically ill children. He called the author of the article, Robert Frank, a ''dishonest reporter.''"

Don Imus is a cruel, cranky old man who is not funny and has nothing to say. That said, the NABJ should be ashamed of themselves. I know that among their ranks has got to be somebody who has said something racist. But have they been censured. Of course not. Racism is not exlusively white. Don Imus, for all his stupidity and cruelty, can go back. I don't care. I won't listen. By the way, his comments about the Rutger girls was not a viscous insult. It was a stupid comment. It was an insensitive comment. We know that. A viscous insult is an attack on the First Amendment, a besmirching of ones patriotism, an attack on one's personality instead of their ideas.
Imus' comments were just stupid.

Thirty-something years ago, Imus commented on the air that "every white man in New York wants a hooker with hair like Tina Turner." I don't recall there being outrage at the time. But the pattern is obvious - the man is an unreconstructed racist. Why should we think be will behave any differently now?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:33 PM on 10/10/2007

The reason there is no outrage is because....That's a compliment.

He loves Tina Turner.

And so do all his fans.

So get over yourself and stop trying to find something to get mad at.

The NABJ’s hypocrisy is staggering and appalling. By what right does it appoint itself as the authority to decide who should or should not be employed? Why aren’t you demanding the firing of Isiah Washington? Is NOW also outraged by rappers and rap moguls such as Russell Simmons, Snoop Dog, erc, BET and music executives who have accumulated billions of dollars by denigrating the women of their own community? Why aren’t you demanding their immediate firing and shutdown of their venues on the airwaves? Marches by Sharpton and his hired “protesters” now and again will not suffice, nor will "recommendations" by Russell Simmons to refrain from such language. Why aren’t you organizing your members to e-mail BET and MTV, and other radio station managers to stop broadcasting these misogynistic videos and lyrics? You are all a disgrace to the legacy of Martin Luther King and the real struggle for civil rights! I suspect that your outrage has more to do with Imus’ dislike of Hillary Clinton and less to do with concern for women.

As a liberal, I don’t want to live in a sanitized society in which every utterance is scrutinized and is “approved” or “disapproved”. I would rather be offended than have a self-appointed thought police determine what I can and cannot listen to or what should or should not offend me. Who appointed Sharpton and the NABJ as the thought police and arbiters of virtuous radio behavior? This is straight out of the former Soviet Union’s propaganda machine. Or, perhaps you are ignorant of the history of totalitarian governments – so-called “offensive” remarks, and off to the re-education camp you go!
And yes, I can’t wait for the return of the I-Man, hopefully with his entire crew intact, un-chastened and unleashed, not a kinder, gentler, Imus lite. Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh, Neil Boorz, and others spew racist content as serious ideology on a regular basis. I don’t recall anyone clamoring for their immediate dismissal. And I would not support their dismissal from the air – I would rather argue against them.

Get over it. Imus did his time, he's been off for a half a year, he's got as much a right to be on the air as much as anyone else. You've got a lotta censorship going otherwise. The black journalists should grow up.

I COMPLETELY agree. Bring back Imus. I miss him terribly. He cut through the blowhards trying to run this country. I loved that he called Cheney a war criminal. And he called Hillary Satan. Her people definitely do not want him back on the air, and are probably working overtime to make sure it doesn't happen.

But parents of autistic kids need him. Ditto the wounded vets. He did one hell of a lot more good than ANY of the anchors on TV today.

I hope to hell Imus returns pronto. And NABJ should know that if they listen to his 1970s shows, even though he was coked up and drunk, he did a lot more for Black America than any other announcer/radio show host at the time. Those complaining, like the new head of NABJ, are too young to have listened in then. They should get some education by showing up at the Museum of Broadcasting and do their homework.

Enough already! Just let me have my mornings back. I'm so sick of people attacking a show and person they obviously never heard or watched.

Please bring Imus back to us soon.

Even Sharpton -- the man who called for his ouster -- has said he wouldn't mind Imus coming back.

He said his intent was to send a message, not to deprive the man his livelihood.

This just goes to show once again that not all black people think alike.

Why is everyone afraid of Imus returning? Very interesting, let's think about it? There is an erection coming up and our man Imus likes to refer to a certain female candidate as satan. Hillary, get a grip. Imus couldnt' get Kerry elected and he can't get you not elected. Relax and let us listen to our favorite morning program! Nobody is going to stop you from getting elected judging from yesterday's lackluster debate by the Repubs. As long as Billy boy doesn't screw up, you're in

What is the matter with these so-called journalists who want to censor someone they don't like? Our country and the 1st Amendment are going down the freaking toilet. If Imus doesn't get rehired, there are going to be so many super pissed off people out there it'll be ugly. It's going to far. I just read freaking NOW doesn't want Imus to have a job either. These groups are doing so much harm to the future of our once great country.
