I Like ItI Don’t Like It

2007-10-11-JonandLynneCheney.JPGJon Stewart hosted Lynne Cheney on last night's Daily Show and, where you might have expected him to push her on the general failures of the Bush administration, he sort of...backed off? He appeared, at times, to struggle over what to say, and although he lobbed her some general questions about Iraq and gay marriage, at one point he conceded, "This is very uncomfortable. Only because you know what, here's the thing: You're not your husband, and it's not fair to challenge you on things that aren't you." Maybe it's because she greeted him with a Darth Vader action figure or perhaps because she was generally light-hearted and agreeable throughout the interview, but Stewart seemed both deferential and genuinely respectful towards Cheney — someone he clearly disagrees with — and it was interesting (and unusual) to see him struggling in an interview like that for the balance of that respect with what he obviously felt very strongly about putting to his highly-connected guest. It isn't the most crackling interview in the world, but it's interesting insofar is it's one of the rare times that Stewart seems to be wrestling on air, without being completely in control. It was the type of interview that might actually encourage conservatives to join him on The Daily Show more often. That said, he did run the popular feature "You Don't Know Dick" — but the respectful version, "You Don't Know Richard Cheney." When you don't have anything nice to say, sometimes saying nothing says it all.

Cheney actually showed her teeth a little more on "Morning Joe" this a.m. in a feisty exchange with Joe Scarborough (Joe: "I sort of suspect that at the end of 8 years you're gonna come out swinging." Cheney: "You want me to wait that long?" Heh.) Cheney took aim at Jimmy Carter and his recent comments about the U.S. and torture (you know, the ones where he called the other Cheney a "disaster"). Said [Lynne] Cheney: "Jimmy Carter is so predictable...he brings out a book and he creates a fuss." She said that she "was thinking that I really lost respect for Jimmy Carter in 1991" with respect to the U.N. resolution authorizing military action againt Saddam Hussein in Kuwait, when "as a former president took it upon himself to write heads of state urging them not to let their representatives vote" for the measure. She said that she thought at the time, "he really has crossed some kind of line here." 1991 smackdown! Joe returned to the main point, which was that Carter's statement were ultimately a marking ploy, yes? "You are saying it with a little less subtlety than I did," said Cheney, smiling. "I just said it was predictable." Ooh, snap!

Cheney also explained why she'd been more than happy to go on The Daily Show: "There's a great demographic there to reach...I wanted to reach all sorts of audiences — I didn't want to just sit inside the Beltway and talk to people I already know." An attitude her husband shares, we're sure.

That interview was extreamely dissapointing, Lynn Cheney giggled her way through while Stewart was grasping for words and mumbling. What was the point for giving this woman a free ride, when all she did was praising her Husband the whole time, who started this WAR with some fake story ! She chewed Blitzer not so long ago for asking her more of a direct question. What was Stewart afraid of ? It was a different Stewart mouthing off at Chris Mathews just a few days ago . Not that I am a fan of Chris !

Come on folks! That was fascinating TV. Jon was the mongoose before the cobra, and deftly managed to politely get the questions in and get himself out of the way without getting fanged. Gotta watch it again to catch the Mom and Apple Pie segment after L Cheney quickly left the set and Jon had a tantrum - till the pie showed up.

And lighten up - it ain't the news, but the news sure could use a lesson from Jon Stewart!

Jon Stewart and his program are about money first, funny second with the truth a distant third. They will always bow to their corporate masters so laugh when it is funny but never expect them to stand up to power when it matters.

Jon explained himself when he said he didn't want to challenge her about things her husband has said and done.
Here is the problem - she is out there defending Dick. In a CBS interview she said that he is a wonderful man and that she thinks the problems we have with him is his strength.

Since she has chosen to defend Dick she should have been challenged but look - the show is on Comedy Central. This is not a news show. Love ya Jon - wish you could have brought yourself to be blunt with mrs. evil just to let her know that we aren't buying that - he's really a great guy crap. Hell, she might be the one giving him the ideas. Oh well ..

i think it is a telling sign of the current state of affairs when we are expecting our comedians to hold politicians (or the wife of) feet to fire. What about the frickin news?

I thought this show was funny and Jon Stewart was quite amusing in his "fear" of Lynn. So give Jon a break. He is supposed to be funny and he was. Sure I want Dick to be lambasted and strung up by his heels...but I want journalists and our opposition leaders to do it.

Are we sure that was Jon Stewart, it looked and sounded a lot like Katie Couric in drag.

I think Jon Stewart was subtly trying to get the snake to take the bait but she did'nt.Too bad,it would have brought out the worst of her[which there is an enormous amount of],and which is undoubtedly what he wanted.

COME ON GANG!!!! John Stewart acted like a true gentleman and when he explained why he was so "cautious" he explained it all. He was a perfect gentleman and his interview was perfect because he recognized that this lady, despite being the wife of baby Hitler, is still her own self and I felt she came across very genuine and proper when she could have been a real bitch and had cause to do so. This was NOT the idiot that PEOPLE voted for as vice-president... it was his wife... so don't blame her ... NOR Stewart. I am DEFINATELY NOT a REpublican but that does not mean that all Republicans OR THEIR WIVES are idiots and bad people.

I agree wholeheartedly with you and your comment, except for the last sentence.

That you are not a REpublican _does_ mean that all Republicans AND THEIR WIVES _are_ idiots and bad people.

She talked about how much respect there is in places where there aren't many people. She didn't mention how much crap the whole town takes from the paymaster.

Jon Stewart was respectful. This is not a crime, it is a strength. His questions were not exactly softball. They tread the fine line between respectful and aggressive. He was still funny- doing a parody of "You Don't Know Dick" was at least amusing, making the best of an awkward situation. He allowed Mrs. Cheney to be herself and tried to pin her down on gay issues and war issues. She did shoot daggers, but she carried on, with respect. She is a prisoner of her own ideology, which she represents forcefully and intelligently. She is no more the anti-Christ than Hillary Clinton. She is MARRIED to the anti-Christ, poor thing, and she should receive our deepest sympathies. Just kidding. I think Jon Stewart scored a big "get" as they say in the news business, and he handled it with maturity.

SO, did John Stewart ASK her on to the show, or did Cheney ASK to be on the show?

Inquiring minds wanna know.

She's a bitch, that is obvious.

So is John Stewart a bitch. The thing to remember is that it's not John Stewart that makes the show what it is. It's his viewers and what makes you think that they would fall for this bitches bullshit. These viewers do not rush out to buy children's books and they sure don't buy into this Modern Day Nazis bullshit.
Once again progressive talk had a chance to ask some truthful questions and just like his prime time partners in suck ass he caved as soon as he felt the wetness in his pants.
What a punking this punk took.
