2007-10-11-obama.jpgSen. Barack Obama, D-IL, went on the attack today in a sharply worded editorial on the Lieberman-Kyl Iran Amendment that graced the pages of the New Hampshire Union-Leader. There were two targets of the Senator's ire: the first was the amendment itself, which accuses Iran of fighting "a proxy war against the Iraqi state and coalition forces in Iraq" and designates the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization. The second was Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, for her vote in favor of the measure.

Obama charges that the amendment has "opened the door" to military action with Iran, and calls out Clinton as "the only Democratic presidential candidate to support this reckless amendment." He continues: "We do need to tighten sanctions on the Iranian regime... But this must be done separately from any unnecessary saber-rattling... Above all, it must be done through tough and direct diplomacy with Iran, which I have supported, and which Sen. Clinton has called 'naive and irresponsible.'"

Despite his condemnation for Lieberman-Kyl, Obama didn't vote against it. He didn't vote at all. Both he and Sen. John McCain, R-AZ, were on the campaign trail when Majority Leader Harry Reid allowed the amendment to hit the Senate floor (on relatively short notice).

But even prior to the amendment's passage, the Huffington Post has learned, Obama didn't weigh in. According to a high-ranking Hill staffer, "he wasn't there at all," neither during debate over the measure nor when the Democratic caucus purged two provisions that, among other things, would have declared prudent the "use of all instruments of United States national power in Iraq... with respect to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran."

Obama also didn't mention the amendment during the most recent Democratic presidential debate despite being asked two questions specifically about Iran. The debate was on Sept 26, the day the measure was approved.

Obama's camp dismissed the significance of this "late-to-the-party" critique.

"[The Senator] strongly differs with Senator Clinton and others supporting the amendment on Iran and he will continue to speak out because he believes the way to achieve diplomacy is to actually pursue it--which is what he would do as president," his spokesperson Jen Psaki, told the Huffington Post.

But at least one critic of the Lieberman-Kyl amendment said that the Senator's silence during the lead up to the vote and when the vote took place hurts his credibility on the issue.

"In theory I would agree with what Obama says [in the Union Leader]," John Isaacs, Executive Director of Council for a Livable World, told the Huffington Post. "But he has the same problem with this vote as with his criticism of his 2002 vote authorizing Bush to use force in Iraq: it would have been easier for him to lob this criticism if he had been there to vote against the amendment."

Thanks for your post. Mr Obama seems to be a new convert to his point of view due to his lag in polls.

His main problem is he lacks passion.

McCain isn't attacking anyone for their vote on Kyl-Lieberman.

Could Obama be more specific about 'tough direct diplomacy'? Clinton says 'freeze their financial assets, then we've got some leverage at the table." What's Obama's plan? "Please Iran, don't get nuclear weapons." (cocks his head like Reagan) "Let me reiterate. Please, don't get nuclear weapons!" (points his finger like Kennedy)

Obama is just pandering to the netroots in the primary. He missed the vote to keep his pandering options open for Jewish voters in the general election.

Look, she VOTED for the amendment, Just like she voted FOR the Iraq War. No amount of spinning is going to change what SHE voted for.

What's the matter, did she make another mistake? She's made plenty, and now she is going to have to take the heat for her lack of judgment.

Her complaining about Obama and Edwards calling her out for her vote, is just her way of saying "I'm sorry".

Hillary got used to calling others "naive and irresponsible". She can dish it out, but she can't it when the truth comes back to bite her in the butt.

Your better hire more 'spinners' and attack dogs, because things are about to change.

Unity and REAL Leadership for a change.

Anything posted by Sam Stein is suspect in objective and accuracy. His material is often heavily bias and tainted with the worst form of yellow jouranalism. He is a hacket hack for Huff&Puff always promoting the O-Bomb-able one and smearing his opposition. There is no credability or integrity in Sammy boy's op-ed pieces.

Maybe you should read the article, which questions Obama's coming to the issue late.

It should be a crime how people, including speakers and writers of news articles coverup facts to their benefit. As we all know by now this was a last minute vote that was called up spontaneously. Obama would've been there but it was going to be voted on then it wasn't then it was; by then Obama was away when it was called on to vote, and the person responsible for this turnaround was a person on Clinton's staff, Reid's son wasn't it. So this is another stinking political manuever by Clinton backers. Obama has absolute right to call Clinton on this and the 2002 vote!!!

It's becoming painfully obvious that the plan is for Bush to start a war with Iran before he leaves and hand it off to Hillary or the republican. The effect will be the same, years of war, huge profits for the corporate whores.

Hilary voted for The Patriot Act, and is on the Arms Committee. She promises great things, but we have to look at what she's really doing, and where her elegance lies.

Neither Barack Obama nor Hilary Clinton have done anything to get rid of The Patriot Act. They both are not what they say they are.

Check out this video clip. It contains PBS footage of how the CIA overthrew the Shaw of Iran http://youtube.com/watch?v=ldgbOxDX6DE The US government has caused Iranians enough pain and grief.

Here is an interesting podcast on the dark side of The Patriot Act http://www.thedavidallenshow.com/website/podcasts/Entries/2007/9/20_Judge_Andrew_Napolitano_-_%22Nation_of_Sheep%22_and_Ron_Paul_for_President.html

I think that showing up at a party and then decide it was boring is better then not showing up at a party and deciding it was boring.

The wording in the so called "patriot" Act allows the President to attack terrorists without Congressional approval: especially combined with the blank check Congress gave Bush on the Global War On Terror.
By declaring Iran's revolutionary Guard a terrorist group all bush has to do is say that they have attacked us and he can attack them.
Clinton absolutely helped give bush the legal excuse to attack Iran.

It's become the oldest trick in Washington "Your either with us or against us". Without a doubt, it's identical to what they did with Iraq and will do soon with Iran.
Do you agree with Obama that the Lieberman-Kyl Iran Amendment has "opened the door" to military action with Iran?

After Watching Bolton,Bush's UN guy,on Tavis Smiley I think the Bush Administration is going to attack Iran . They may very well use the small nukes like the kind that were "accidentally" flown on a bomber to the US base that sends things to the Mideast.

Senator Obama has no standing to criticize Senator Clinton for voting in favor of the non-binding Kyle-Lieberman resolution, when he himself voted in favor of similar legislation in the past, and failed to show up to deliberate and vote on this resolution. By the same token, it is wrong for him to claim that the resolution paves the way for military action when he knows full well that Senator Clinton and others have taken appropriate legislative steps to ensure that cannot happen, without express congressional approval. And it is madness for his supporters to say that he has taken a position by not showing up. The only position he has taken is on the couch as an arm chair critic.

Obama is trying to pull a fast one. As pointed out earlier in the comments, Obama COSPONSORED a bill to label the IRG terrorists!

The "Iran Counter-Proliferation Act of 2007," which Obama cosponsored on April 24, 2007. Look it up.
