Gore Gets Praise From Obama, Clinton On Nobel Win

2007-10-12-clintongoresmiles.jpgNow that the Nobel Prize Committee has awarded Al Gore (and the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change) for his work on global warming, speculation will inevitably fly that it gives him more momentum for a late entry into the 2008 Democratic presidential field.

But so far, Democratic hopefuls don't seem worried about that possibility.

Senator Barack Obama lauded Gore with praise in a statement released to the Huffington Post by his office:

By having the courage to challenge the skeptics in Washington and lead on the climate crisis facing our planet, Al Gore has advanced the cause of peace and richly deserves this reward. His voice and his vision have awakened the conscience of America to the urgency of this threat, and now we must take bold action so that our children inherit a planet that is cleaner, safer, and more peaceful for generations to come.

On Senator Hillary Clinton's homepage, the campaign posted a photo of Gore with a short statement praising him for his 'dedication and tireless work' and calling the award 'well deserved.'

But of all the Democratic seekers, it was Bill Richardson who took the most interesting approach in praising Gore. After boasting of all the work that he has done to make his state compliant with the Kyoto Protocol, the New Mexico Governor almost seemed to suggest that he was the only candidate who could follow through on what Gore has started:

Vice President Gore's efforts on global warming are awe-inspiring. However, solving this problem will take more than the heroic efforts of one man. It will require sacrifice from every American. It will require the resolve of the world. It also will require bold Presidential leadership. I am ready to provide it.

What would happen if Obama, Edwards, or Richardson pledged to appoint Gore as Secretary of Energy or State if elected? I'd love to see him as president, but my low expectations would be exceeded if the next administration at least finds some way to productively incorporate one of our nation's most brilliant visionaries.

The bottom line is that our economically interdependent world can either continue its Us vs. Them ideological conflicts until we mutually annihilate, or we can pull together to address a common threat. It's not Us vs. Them, it's Us vs. Ourselves.

Environmentalism, at its core, is less about the environment than it is about ourselves and our way of life. It's about the preponderance of evidence that our way of life is unsustainable. The climate change deniers are much more uncomfortable with this referendum on post-industrial consumerism than they are with the science itself.

Similarly, the Islamic terrorist movement is far more concerned with the foibles of Western materialism than they are with democracy, Christianity, and possibly even Judaism. We're not only getting pushback from nature, but from huge communities that believe that our socioeconomic constructs are destructive and corrupt.

The ultimate test of our nation's greatness will be to swallow our pride and learn to accept the possibility that we're on the wrong track. I'm not saying "blame America first". But as the dominant superpower presiding over an increasingly troubled planet, it is ludicrous to suggest that we are not at fault and even more absurd to refuse to lead the search for solutions.

America's DNA is tightly woven into the social fabric of world. If the planet is sick, then it's our responsibility to lead a global effort to diagnose and treat the cause of the problem, even if it calls into question the sustainability of our way of life.

Thank your for this enlightening article.

Why must Barack wait till 2012?

Has anyone seen anything as sincere, thoughtful and well said, as his praise for

Al Gore winning the Nobel Peace Prize?:

Barack Obama is ready to be president now. Read:

"By having the courage to challenge the skeptics in Washington and lead on the climate crisis facing our planet, Al Gore has advanced the cause of peace and richly deserves this reward. His voice and his vision have awakened the conscience of America to the urgency of this threat, and now we must take bold action so that our children inherit a planet that is cleaner, safer, and more peaceful for generations to come."

Spoken like true a President.

You are 100% incorrect in your information about "write-in" voting. For several election cycles during my wild and crazy years, I wrote in my name for president and other state and local offices.

You should be aware after all of the strange and weird elections of the past that any number of oddities happen with the ballots on vote days..

Your observation/comment is the best insight that I have read on ANY website for a long, long time.

NOW!!

How can we make it reign true?

FYI Arriana, there are other candidates running for the nomination. How about we let the people have a chance to look at the field without the press narrowing it down to Hillary and Barrack? Just a thought. Maybe if the press, including your site, were to give each of them some coverage then the people could choose. IT seems the press is going to repeat their candidate selection process like they did in 2000 selecting the shrub for the GOP

We have to help Huffington Post with their news. They just don't acknowledge that there are other candidates. Edwards had a great statement this morning:

"Congratulations to Al Gore. The Nobel Peace Prize rewards three decades of Vice President Gore's prescient and compelling -- and often lonely -- advocacy for the future of the Earth. His leadership stands in stunning contrast to the failure of the current administration to pursue policies that would reduce the harm of global warming.

"The Nobel Committee's recognition of Vice President Gore shines a bright light on the most inconvenient truth of all - the selection of George Bush as president has endangered the peace and prosperity of the entire planet.

"Two terms later, Americans are ready for bold change, ready to be patriotic about something other than war and ready to take action to stop global warming before it's too late. The stakes are sky-high - as Al Gore predicted, our Earth is in the balance."

I particularly loved and noted the term "selection" not election of George Bush.

I've always said you have to be power crazy/stupid to want to be president. Everyone who has the job seems to age 30 years in the span of 4/8 years, even Chimpy who was barely working the first 5 years. If you already have the recognition and adulation the job engenders, but don't actually have to do the job, then why?

Hillary better hope Al doesn't run. Gore should run with the pledge to be a one term president, just to straighten out the mess GW Bush has made. Obama as his VP could take on a significant portfolio designed to prepare him for a presidential run in 2012.

How about NO to Hillary. IF there is a way to elect the GOP, it is for HIllary to be the candidate.

Gore - Obamma
Gore-Edwards
Gore-Richardson

All three good, winning tickets.

Clinton and Obama sent words of praise.

Are they the only candidates to do so or, as usual, is Huffpo expressing its' fixation on these twins?

Maybe he can now get pass the polling negatives associated with Bill Clinton's sexual peccadillos and support Bill's wife's campaign for president.

It would frankly seem more than strange to hear him grudgingly enter the campaign. Don't we want a president who *wants* to do the job? 100%?

We are getting to the point that no person of real substance wants the job. Our nation is in such real crisis, much of it Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton produced, we may need to draft a real adult to lead us. Gore is experienced and has moved beyond the political/partisan cautious, try-to-please-everyone persona. He is confident in his convictions and abilities and ready to lead. He should run for one term only. No need to worry about re-election or stepping on toes. If the nation gave him a true mandate, he could clean up Dodge.
