Interstellar space travel will never happen; the universe is just too large even for warp drive. Where the possibilities lie, is in inter-dimensional travel. The universe may well turn out to be filled with time/space/dimensional possibilities and a 'time machine' may well be a dimensional possibility explorer.
Again, aliens from another planet is impossible. But ourselves from an alternate time/space continuum is more likely. For example I found myself running from myself one day; and sure enough years later, there I was chasing myself.

Rudy got a very offbeat question from some kid. He should have politely dismissed the question. He of course didn't.
He came off a fool for answering the question seriously even if he later "qualified" it by asking the young person if he was going to be a writer or a scientist.
He could have also been totally honest with the kid. He could have said that if any extraterrestrial intelligence made contact with our planet and had hostile intentions we would have no way with dealing with them since any such civilization would probably be so far beyond us that we would be completely helpless.
That would have been the truth. Of course that would have been an even worse answer for Mr. Giuliani considering his hawkish terrorist stance.
Personally, I'm thrilled he chose not to play the astute politician and opened himself up to the sort of attack we see here in the Huff Post.
If it had been any of the Democratic candidates who had been caught up in this ET question and answer scenario, it would have been the top story on Fox News, the main headline tomorrow on various papers and blogs, plus Rush, Ann, and the rest of the Hitler Youth would have been gnashing their teeth in delight.
As it stands, Mr. Giuliani received a mild tweak from the internet. He should consider himself lucky.

Forget Zombies. That's just the tip of the "speculative" menace pantheon of threats. Nobody can expect that a race that can cross the galaxy, might just stand off and bombard us forever until we capitulate -- so I'll mention it, and therefore Guiliani can say that nobody could have predicted this when he inevitably fails to protect us from this scenario. This is standard protocol for the best of all possible leaderships. Until you have a few books on the topic, and run military drills, you can't have credibility when denying it.
What we need is the Patriot Umbrella System. While the US might be protected from interstellar warfare, there still is the matter of all those rocks an alien could just hurl at us. They could cross the universe with big nets in the asteroid belt, or just hurl half-eaten apples out of the side of the Intergalactic Winnebago. In this sort of stand-off battle, water and baseball bats won't work for the typical hand-to-tentacle confrontation we usually see our tough-as-nails movie-stars engage in.
How is my family going to be safe unless we make this a business? We lowered water quality, so that with all that extra money, everyone could buy an inefficient water purifier, therefore keeping those safe who actually care enough to spend more money on products to keep their family safe (reverse osmosis means you care more about lead and children, folks).
So, unless we make the private citizen be personally responsible for defending against meteorites with personal anti-meteorite umbrellas -- the alien menace wins. They hate us for our privatized business folks. I don't know if that means we need to end privatized businesses, or what -- hey, this stuff doesn't have to make sense, we just have to be serious about it and commit to whatever our Best Leaders come up with.
