Pupils at a city middle school will be able to get birth control pills and patches at their student health center after the local school board approved the proposal Wednesday evening.

The plan, offered by city health officials, makes King Middle School the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to students in grades 6 through 8, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.

I fear more about the long term health consequences by this short-sighted venture then social norms or morals. Birth control pills contain synthetic hormones that suppress the natural cycle regulating the reproductive endocrine system which is very undeveloped in pubertal girls. We know it takes a few years before the body sets its own rhythm after menarche (the first period) - and hasnt' finished developing. Pills are not tested when being tested for safety and efficacy in children and its a huge gamble to nochalantly prescribe them to young girls. Teaching about safe sex would be far more effective in preventing the spread of disease and drug trafficking by pharmaceutical companies.

A responsible parent would talk to a physician, and get the medical stats and facts on this matter.
While I do agree that these kids should be taught, rather than commanded. The truth and education are always better than bans and restrictions.

Conservatives get all worked up about this story, but wasn't it a conservative that suggested that school kids carry guns to school to protect themselves?

We don't let people drive before they are 16 because they are not ready for the responsibility. We do not let people drink until they are 21 because they are not ready for the responsibility. So children should also not have sex until they are ready for the responsibility. Condoms and birth control are not 100% reliable, so oops my 12 year old is pregnant because the birth control didn't work. oh well!

It's long been known liberals are degenerates with out morals but this unabashed out in the open advocating for sex with 11 year olds is beyond the pale, beyond the deprivations anyone could have imagined.
No wonder you monsters are so quick to call hypocritical anyone on the right; you have absolutely no standards and thus never fail to live up to expectations.

ownsthepodium-No liberal is promoting the idea that 11 year olds should have sex.Why did you make that up?

1) How old is the typical 6th grader?

2) Do you think that middle schools in Maine should make a full range of contraception available to students in grades 6 through 8?

3) If yes, do you think providing contraception to 11-year olds is promoting or discouraging sexual activity in Maine middle schools?

Sure sweet heart let us first go get some birth control pills for you!!

Who should be able to dispense contraceptives to minors?

As Thom Hartmann would say "good on" and I say "Maine". A whiff of sanity, or a planned political hornet's nest? These days you never know.

What no one has mentioned so far, is our cultural contribution to kids being bombarded with sex from almost every side. In advertising, sex is the carrot, and the product is the stick that they dangle in front of us and our children. Sexual lyrics in music, romance novels, rotten celebrities like paris h. and brittney spears. Nearly every tv commercial promises that, if you use their product, beautiful women are going to fall all over you. It's the money machine that takes precedence over eveything, including your kid's best interests. You can tell alot about a country, by the people it chooses to celebrate.

You f**ks are really weirded out from all your drugs.
Why put a kid in a circumstance where they can have sex?
You crazy sob's are ruining the country.
Take care of your children and they won't be having children. Insane!

No one is putting the kid in the situation where he/she can have sex. You've stated this twice now and are just as stupid the second time.

These kids are haveing sex ON THEIR OWN. What is being proposed is that we try to AVOID a lot of unwanted pregnancies that do a LOT of harm to the new child/parent AND the newborn.

Quit being such an asshole and get that through your skull.

When you lost your virginity did you run home and tell your parents? I doubt it. What makes you think todays kids are any different? A parent no matter how in tune with their kids is probably NOT going to know when it happens until after the fact. All you can do is talk openly with them and hope for the best. If a kid seeks condoms, the pill, or some other birth control maybe you have done a good job.

Hey jethro, the girls were getting pregnant BEFORE this plan was devised. Their pregnancies prompted this plan.
Just try to stop kids from being curious about their own sexuality.
They are not being forced to take the pill, einstein.
If you teach you kids the facts about reproduction, stds, and the consequences of sexual activity, you should have nothing to worry about.

The legal age of consent in Maine is 14, hence the school system is assisting underage students in breaking the law. Nice lesson for the students.

Of course you're right. They shouldn't do ANYTHING and let the students break the law all by themselves. Then they can incarcerate the kids and let the baby be born in jail.

Now THAT would be the smart thing to do.

Sadly, children are having sex far too early. Our culture is one of "look as sexy as you can but don't touch!"

The problem is, many of those "sexy" kids do touch. At least those who do will not have babies as well. Now, if we could just convince the far right that birth control is not murder, we'd have a much more sane society from which to begin a more intelligent discussion about protecting themselves from STDs. ....but I'm not holding my breath.

NEO,
this is for you.

You're daughter would have been treated under "implied consent" if she had had a life threatening injury.

If she was sitting in the waiting room then her bleeding was under control and he injury was non-life threatening.

Emergency Departments triage patients according to severity and then time arrived. Most severly injured or sick get priority.

Hope this helps.

Love ya doll :D xxoo SI

This has been an interesting thread. I was pleasantly surprised that some leftwingers actually wanted to be real parents and not allow the government to take over parental responsibilities.

If a child becomes pregnant at such a young age exactly where is the parental involvement?

Don't be stupid. Allowing unwanted pregnancies in such young CHILDREN only burdens society with TWO children to raise on welfare and, most likely, incarcerate for some period of time.

SHow me you've got SOME type of brain and get with the program. kids having Kids is a BAD THING.

quisling.

So why should people pay for children's healthcare? Kids can still live without a socialist healthcare system. Kids can't live when they have their brains sucked out when a skank isn't ready to have a baby.

Yeah, yeah, furryass. And where will your mother be come the first of the month? Standing by the mailbox, waiting for her gubmint check.

Firaxis,
I can see you now. You are strapped to a bed with liquid nourishment going into an arm. In your left ear, a feed with Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilley alternatively talking non-stop has been surgically implanted. In your right ear, Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter screech on and on. Your waste is collected in bags that nurses periodically dispose of and replace. Most of us are able to escape such horrifically dangerous influences as we choose. Not you, though. What a nightmare of a life you lead. I am deeply sorry someone has done this to you.

You ARE being forced to think and act this way...right?

Maine has something all of us need and few of us have: publicly funded elections.
About 85% of the State Legislature are elected using this system.
The legislature is made up of ordinary people instead of members of an elite club. These citizen legislators respond to their constituents rather than mega corporations and a handful of kooks.
Sex education and access to birth control is a human right. Pretending your children are not sexually mature and never will be results in skyrocketing teen pregnancy rates and unnecessary misery.
Push for publicly funded elections in your state and you too can have enlightened public policy.

On a topic like this one, I'm afraid my remarks will get lost in the pile, but here goes anyway.

I know liberal/progressive readers like to be in favor of things like this -- but birth control pills with or without parental notification (especially without) have huge health consequences that are not well advertised. It's truly a case of "WHAT THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW."

A dear friend of mine died from birth control use. She was 27 years old. The official cause of death was pulmonary embolism which was determined from an autopsy.

*******************************************************************************************
It always troubles me that the RISK of CARDIOVASCULAR side effects of birth control pills is much DOWN-PLAYED by birth control advocates.
********************************************************************************************

My friend left behind a husband and a three year old daughter and many shocked and saddened love ones and friends. I am quite sure she was unaware of this factor and even her physician was stymied by her unusual symptoms.

In fact, she became critically ill WHILE in a doctor's office for follow up care in what was then an unknown condition, was rushed to a nearby hospital emergency room less than fifteen minutes away and was pronounced dead a short time afterwards.

SOME THINGS TRANSCEND POLITICS, folks. Anyone using birth control pills should be old enough to understand their side effects and dangers. There's lots safer ways to avoid pregnancy.

Hope the word gets out. For some it's not just a story about statistics, for me it's about the loss of a young life.

My friend was such a lovely, caring young woman and I miss her.

There are far more options than just the Pill.
Trouble is, one in particular means that it's the MAN's responsibility to use them, but that's just damned near unthinkable for some guys, isn't it?

No, I've seen MANY girls twelve and UNDER pregnant. Better to keep them safe from an unwanted pregnancy than having to deal with a child at such an age.

Condoms too. No little kid should be subjected to a STD.
