U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has a 15-cent price tag stuck to his Yale law degree, blaming the school's affirmative action policies in the 1970s for his difficulty finding a job after he graduated.

Some of his black classmates say Thomas needs to get over his grudge because Yale opened the door to extraordinary opportunities.

Sat mute for years, finally asked a question during oral argument, then sat mute for more years, and asked one more question.

"Most qualified nominee for s sct" said daddy Bush.

Shows contempt Bush dynasty has for law in general and the legal profession in particular.

To Bushes, lawyers & judges are just part of the hired help, a few rungs above their gardeners, maids and cooks. Servants.

Thomas is right: he is a product of affirmative action. And Yale helped him get his job with that idiot Danforth, failed Episcopal priest & ex senator, when he was AG of MO. Danforth bore white man's burden and pushed Clarence into every position he had after that.

Clarence, you should get down on your hands and knees and thank Eli Yale and all the other alumni who were so generous as to give you a chance.

Because you are in fact second rate, or third rate, intellectually (though a first rate boot licker for the right wingers who sponsored you in Warshington).

And had you gone to Georgia State Law School rather than Yale, you'd probably be fixing someone's DUI at the courthouse in some small county seat in Georgia.

Some people take advantage of the chance. Anita Hill was an affirmative action Yalie and she graduate with honors, she did not just skate by and feel sorry for herself.

When it came time to speak truth to power Anita Hill walked the walk. She makes me proud.

On the other hand; If she gave Clarence Thomas the blow job he asked for Anita Hill might be Attorney General today, or at least a federal judge.

I was AA and I graduated Magna Cum Laude at UCI, and with Moot Court Honors at USC law school. I have achieved many things that I am proud of and AA gave me a chance. Check my profile. I will always support AA but I think it should be class based. Too many of my friends are doctors and lawyers and I don't think their kids should get AA just because they are black or chicano. After all, they were raised rich. AA should be for kids that have to overcome adversity.

BTW.... up above I mentioned my Bro getting his PhD in molecular genetics from Harvard...

He wanted to be a Vet, and go to UC Davis for school...(he was 18, and it was close to home).

Because of affirmative action, he lost his spot.... so he regrouped, took out loans, went to Harvard (he was also accepted at MIT), earned scholarships for all his post grad.... got his PhD, then Returned to Davis, got his degree in Vet Med, and became a professor there

And --to the best of my knowledge-- the "affirmative action" candidate who originally bumped him from Davis is now a vet.... good for everyone.

My family is FAR from rich, BTW.... Way, way far...

But, if my Bro HAD NOT BEEN BUMPED BY Affirmative Action, (this was in the 70's) he'd be a vet in an office now, instead of genetics professor working in Veterinary medicine and writing books and publishing papers

Life is funny --Bigotry isn't

UC Davis Vet school is the best in Cal. Of course, there are only two vet schools. I know three graduates through my work with animal rescue. They practice a very high level of medicine comparable to human practice.

Harvard is a big step up from Davis, of course. My best friend went to Harvard Medical School and is a family practice doc in Santa Ana. Everything he owns says "Harvard" on it.

Your brother has a lot to be proud of.

He obviously worked his ass off, all the way through --- and my parents sacrificed a lot.....

My dad was an appliance repairman... back in the days when people actually fixed them, instead of throwing them away. Hardly a "big Money" occupation.

Granddad was an immigrant (at the age of 14 --and came here on his own --no family support), he was a coal miner, and a union organizer.

I'm proud of my heritage

A couple of weeks ago both Anita Hill and Thomas' wife were interviewed. thomas's wife who is just as snotty and cynical as he is says she hopes someday to get an apology from Anita Hill!!! When Anita Hill was interviewed she was a class act all the way....gracious, elegant, so very far above thomas' hateful wife......What a nasty household that thomas house must be. Neither of them has a tenth of the class as Ms. Hill.

Judging from the commentary posted here it is safe to say that the posters are white.

THis anger is something that is particular to some black Americans especially the ones of the older generation who came up through Jim Crow and prior to the Civil Rights movement.

I've met some of them. I met an older black visual artist who I thought would be a good mentor, very smart and talented and so very angry. Not toxic anger (it didn't spill over into how he treated others) but held in anger that could really harm him and filtered his current experience.

I met another older very prominent successful modern artist (wealthy, published, widely exhibited, critiqued, etc) married to a black woman from a prominent african american family. Same problem. In one exchange the woman shared how she had spent most of her 30's (a decade!)angry about race, her treatment by whites in America and the many doors closed in her face. They have all made it: successful careers, wealth and prominence.

My initial response as a young black female artist was why focus on the past? you've "done it". Enjoy. (how naive)

THere is a reason why black artists and others fled to Paris and other European countries during Jim Crow. The scars of this period are deep and have created a pathology in many african americans. The wounds continue to be passed on.

If the Holocasut can elicit so much sympathy why not the systemic oppression of an entire group over several hundred years here on American soil?

This is not in defense of Thomas who I completely dislike as SC Justice. But he falls into this group of "the oppressed" that becomes "the oppressor" .

It is impossible for whites to acknowledge the pathology created by this history. It is impossible to imagine how one would handle it if the tables were reversed.

So, you're saying he is an example of self-hating, oppressed-become-oppressor??????

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:44 PM on 10/21/2007

I get your point. It's just very difficult to feel sympathetic for someone with Thomas' power, who is trying to undo a lot of good work or at least good intentions to create a better world for everyone. It's one thing to end up as a lawyer or even a judge in a country full of them. It's quite another to end up on the Supreme Court. Even if he was GHW Bush's affirmative action pick (which he was), he is still on the Supreme Court and therefore has an opportunity to influence history in ways the rest of us could never dream of. That's why I have no pity for him.

Indeed. Except that he isnot the only one on the bench causing damage. Scalia is far more dangerous : who can forget the outcome of Gore Vs. Bush? Let's see i.5 million Iraqui refugees; close to 1 million dead Iraquis (mostly children), almost 30,000 dead and maimed american troops.....

And how about the last two appointees? Alito and Roberts complete corporists if ever I saw one.

BTW, I don't pity Thomas, I was trying to give his anger context.

Dear brooklyncitizen...if you think the anger here is race related, as your statement about the posters being white suggests...you are so far off base as to be living on another planet.

For a black man who benefited greatly from the affirmative action policies that were fought for by both whites and blacks, to then turn on those policies as "unjust" is beyond idiotic, it is evil.

And is he is the oppressed turned "oppressor" then why is he still whining like a baby-why doesn't he just quietly go about his evil deeds and STFU?

Nope. Not living on another planet. You don't have to agree.

The post speaks to the pathology that exists in the black community. Clarence Thomas is part of that community whether he serves that community or Americans at large is an entirely different story. It is naive to think that Thomas is evaluated without regard to race. Impossible.

His selection was about race although in my estimation not entirely about race. His politics were/ are significant; as are Powell's and Condi's.

The answer to your last question is in the previous post (hint:pathology-a deviation from healthy, normal conditon).

I've met a black professor like that in college -- real big on his "blackness" and arrogant to the point of "HNIC" delusion to boot.

People of all backgrounds just seem to get more angry as they age -- the "race" issue probably only adds to fuel to a common fire.

Thomas reminds me of Uncle Ruckus from the Boondocks...

nihilon - you are correct. It seems as people age they get crustier, more isolated and pissed off, and more distant from others. I see it in myself and in others my age and older.

I remember people in their 20 or 30s who were different in personality but naturally friendly to acquaintences. Now in their 50s it's well, fuck you, Jack - it's natural to look the other way. It can suck to get older.

I agree marko77. Aging is a real bitch. You look at people and just want to scream STFU on general impressions before they even open their mouths. Standing at the check out at Wal-Mart and looking around just makes me want to go home and try to speed read Chaucer to try to get my IQ back up. I used to be a really nice guy. Now if the girl at the drive thru window forgets to give me a straw I want to pull her through the window by her collar and scream "How am I supposed to drink this while I'm driving, bitch?" I want to scream out that when I went through basic training at the age of 19 the old WWII brown shoe lifer Sargent still in the Army in the mid-1960's just looked at me and said "Son, learn this or you will be killed." You look at people these days who can't get a burger, fries, and diet coke right and you want to make them disassemble and reassemble an M-1 or M-16 at night blind folded with a loaded Colt 45 held to their head. Yes. It is called getting old and it is a real bitch. When they forget the salad dressing when I am trying to eat healthy for a change it sets me off for the rest of the night. And I used to be a nice guy!

What a dope. He has never shown any intelligence or awareness of himself or of his petty, little life. I doubt that he had the intelligence to write even one word of this unfortunate (for him) biography.
Just seeing how unappreciative he is of what he has been given, makes me join him in despising affirmative action. Because had Yale not given him a break, simply because he is African-American, he’d be holding down some menial job someplace. But the Republicans know how to take advantage of class traitors. The Democrats would never have appointed such a dummy to such a high position.

That anger is not "a black thing"
Søren Kierkegaard wrote about this anger and he is a Danish.
Soren Kierkegaard makes the argument that only we have the power to kill our souls: "spiritually, a murder is not conceivable - certainly no violent assaulter can murder an immortal spirit; spiritually suicide is the only possible death."
Thomas does not accept who he is. He defines himself in terms of his anger toward his enemies and gives them power. That is why Jesus said, "Love your enemies"

Thomas's anger towards Anita Hill is based on anger at the black woman for not being a white woman. That is why Thomas married a white woman, to prove he could take her froma white man, not because he loved her.

Everybody has got it wrong. HE is only worth about .15 cents and that's in today's figures.

This man complains about the liberals. And that the republicans are the saviors.

Remember this...the democrats campaigned and passed the laws to get the blacks in this country equal rights.

The democrats marched with the black people to show their support.

The democrats went to bat for the black people to find the ones who killed them during the sixties.

This man couldn't make it with the democrats, after all they are tried to do for the blacks in this country, so he joined the republicans. And the reason he joined the republicans to get political favors. One he would never have succeeded in doing, become a judge on the supreme if he had have been a "token black", which his record shows.

Really truly courageous black men are those like Marshall who this piece of shit Thomas couldn't even compare to that man's sweat.

Jeez, Thomas actually thought a degree from Yale would be worth something? He doesn't get the point of the University. At Yale, it's not about what you learn, but whom you know ... or whom you are related to.

He should just be happy he's employed in a job that is far more stable than any job available in a Communist Country. Being a Supreme Court Justice is better than Welfare ever was.
