2007-10-25-thomp.jpgFormer senator Fred Thompson is slated to visit southern California early next week. But it's not to aid the recovery of a region ravaged by out-of-control wildfires. Instead, Thompson will be collecting cash for his presidential campaign at a series of high-end fundraisers.

The awkward timing of the campaign events is, of course, no fault of Thompson's. Invitations went out well before the fires started raging. But an aide to the senator acknowledged that the fundraiser schedule, though tenuous, remains as planned -- including one event set for Monday in Rancho Sante Fe, where hundreds have been forced to evacuate from their homes.

"We are constantly monitoring the fires and how they might affect the schedule," the aide told the Huffington Post. "And we are the process of reviewing and revising if necessary."

As Thompson focuses on pulling cash out of California, several other presidential candidates are helping send funds in the other direction. The Clinton, Obama, and Edwards campaigns have placed large displays on their Web sites encouraging visitors to donate or volunteer to aid the fire victims. Of the top four Republican campaigns, only McCain's has a similar solicitation.

Many parts of nola and the surrounding areas still resemble a battlefield. Did this thing make any trips there recently to raise funds for its continued relief?

My best wishes go out to those people who were affected by the fires of 2007, but I have to condemn DropDead Fred's very political and inappropriate intention of "raising funds."

Really everyone! You can't expect Freddie to go any further than his backyard. That would require effort.

If only Duke Cunningham were here to help us. Where is he?

OT - My mother-in-law used to work into every conversation she had with everyone she talked to about the day Duke Cunningham came and met with fellow wingers at her house.

Funny, I haven't heard her mention that in a while.

I hope they took their checkbooks with them when they evacuated their homes. If not he is not going to raise much money. Maybe he accepts credit cards. In any case they should hold on to their money as they will need it after they see the insurance check.

Will TV guy will try to sell the Repobulican mantra-people who ask for a govt handout or subsidary are bad- Govt is bad? Now let's see -that will be to people who have lost their homes and are hoping for some govt underwritten program that will help them rebuild on a very low interest rate loan. My guess, Fred slept through the California fire stories and will stay with the mantra.

Most of the homes burned in Cal were mostly expensive homes. These people are probably rich Republicans so let them take care of themselves.

That doesn't seem to be the case in northern San Diego county. But hey, I just live here. You tell me what my area is like.

Here is the deal....

AIPAC has chosen 2 candidates .....Guiliani and Hillary.......its a win win situation for Israel and a lose-lose situation for the USA.

Mark my words on these 2.

This just out " presidential candidate Governor Bill Richardson has donated $10,000 from his campaign funds to the Red Cross" efforts in Southern California. He has also emailed all state employees in New Mexico asking them to donate to this cause. Of coarse as governor, he has also sent fire fighters and equipment from New Mexico to Southern California.

A fund raiser?!?! Why, so people who'll be receiving million dollar checks from their insurance companies, which will boost all are insurance rates, can go out to dinner on us? If this is the clear-minded, strategic thinking that this candidate is going to bring to the oval office, maybe we should leave him on the television set and elect a candidate who understands that you can't win votes by hosting fundraisers for non-existent causes.
