Child workers, some as young as 10, have been found working in a textile factory in conditions close to slavery to produce clothes that appear destined for Gap Kids, one of the most successful arms of the high street giant.

Speaking to The Observer, the children described long hours of unwaged work, as well as threats and beatings.

I was going to say the opposite about Unions , factfinder. After years of brainwashing by the MSM that equated Unioins with communism more and more americans are finally realizing the protection and benefits that are needed if you let corporate decide your pay, benefits and pension.

I think people are stupid to think that we give a shit...its the profits we care about. We care about child labor or other human rights though we talk a good game for political purposes.

I just returned a blazer ($320 suggested retail according to the tag) to Liz Claiborne, along with a $30 white sweater that was ruined when I wore the blazer.
The blazer was MADE IN CHINA with a dye so crappy so inferior it rubbed off on the sweater and destroyed it.
They need to ship the garment mfg. biz overseas to keep the cost down? How much would this jacket retail for if made in USA - $640??? it's polyester fer crying out loud.

Rather that just firing the vender and not selling the close, how about if the GAP actually went and PAY these kids for work that they had already done? I mean the GAP did sell the clothes, and made money at these kids expense, shouldn"t they own them some back pay? Or does indignation only come from a company when it"s free.

Being the father of a 4 month old, I would not mind paying 2 or 3 times the price for safe, high quality, American made products. The problem is you have little choice. We have become a country of quantity over quality. A 4 month old doesn't need 10 outfits as he will outgrow them within weeks. Gap for Kids draws in mothers with high consumption rates, like my wife, who thinks junior needs another made in China sweatshirt to go along with the 4 he already has and will outgrow within weeks. I'm still trying to de-program my wife. If you want to f**k with these guys, stop spending so much.

If you read the article, GAP is not even going to sell the clothes.

I do believe that the GAP is trying harder than most to clean up their act. Why not go after AnnTayor or JJill as was reported in Ms magazine?
It's not even subcontractors for them.

Instead of warning consumers about all the lead in toys they'll buy their children this holiday season because MATTEL and FISHER PRICE have ton of toys being shipped from CHINA thats soaked with lead as I write this post, you decide to tell us about the fuckin GAP and people in India who make their clothes.I'm sure parents would like to know who are the safe manufactures are instead of who in hell makes the GAP cloths.

I'd like to know how long it's going to take
to set up low-cost, automated clothing production. They can program robots to
make the same fender, 10,000 times a day
or whatever, how about a pair of Levi's? Maybe
I'm just a simpleton, but I fail to understand
WHY, in the 21st century, that a lot of this
kind of repetitive production hasn't been
engineered up to basically be turn-key, load
the materials, turn on the juice, and make
whatever it is that you're going to be making.
Nevermind other countries' labor practices,
why don't we have more domestic plants turning
out that kind of stuff? And, as far as The GAP
goes, they can keep that place, for all I care,
I'll never spend a penny in it.

when you ask? Never, is the answer. Because greedy corporations can exploit third world workers and import the goods far more cheaply than the cost to build machines to do it. As long as our government looks the other way on human rights and labor violations committed everyday by every major corporation that has outsourced its manufacturing to the third world, it will keep happening and stories like these will be common.

How do Americans think all this cheap shit shows up in the Malls? Does anyone think about how buying crap on credit is supporting those multinational businesses that are screwing us? What are we teaching our children by buying them an endless supply of hyped crap that they just toss out in a few months? Sheep are sheared and slaughtered between outsourcing, oil price gouging and Iraq, how are we different?

I concur that we as consumers can demand that the outlets that provide us with overpriced clothing, not exploit children for their profit. But, why not insist that what seems to be a complacent Indian government invest in their own people with the appropriate laws protecting their citizens. Or is there the same type of big money, big corruption, influence peddling that we have here in the U.S. that is keeping those standards from being enacted?

because in the end we consumers decide how the laborer is treated. If we buy it..they will continue to exploit them. Its up to us...do we accept this? Get the truth out.

The inhumane nature of American runaway shops with their exploitation of Indian child labor.Indians need to institute various codes of conducts with regard to these runaway shops as opposed to accepting all and sundry forms of foreign direct investments that do not adhere to Indian laws and regulations. But instead promote child slavery and other ruthless forms of exploitation in the name of profit.
