The Iraqi government on Tuesday approved draft legislation lifting immunity for foreign private security companies, sending the measure to parliament, a spokesman said.

The question of immunity has been one of the most serious dispute between the U.S. and the Iraqi government since a Sept. 16 shooting involving Blackwater USA guards that left 17 Iraqi civilians dead.

Remove their immunity? Good. Let's go a step further and prevent the mercenaries' return to the US until after the investigations. Then only allow the indicted ones to come home as a part of a plea bargain that will keep them off American streets for the rest of their lives. It'll mean they choose between life without parole in a US prison or a much, much, much shorter stay among Iraqi convicts.

A sovereign country's parliament will ratify a bill overturning an order issued by a foreign occupation government. Bush should be very pleased that the Iraqi government is applying and demonstrating democratic principles.

Fat chance that this vote will have any effect at all. Their US puppet masters will just ignore it!

How many people do you think it would take to monitor every single thing being said on this forum?

Even if the Iraqi government had given Blackwater "immunity", it is still an American corporation subject to American laws. Iraqi immunity does not translate into immunity from US laws for Blackwater and its thugs. The psychopaths thugs who committed murder and the corporate officers who sanctioned the murder should be prosecuted under U.S. law, especially given the fact virtually all of their resources come from contracts with the U.S. government.

The "immunity" granted by Iraq, or, for that matter, the State Department should not hold up the prosecution and conviction of these murderers for one minute under U.S. law.

I am sure that this incident was not the only one. We treated Iraqi Civilians like their life had no value at all. I want to see the real numbers of civilians killed. After all, the Afghanis complain about it too. Would be a start if we held someone responsible for this mess. But it won't stick in the mind of most people and soon will be forgotten until we see a movie down the line.

It's really going to hit the fan if Iraq begins to hold the private military mercenaries accountable. What's next...the real military? Then the United States?
It appears that the "welcome mat" (if one ever existed) may be wearing thin.
Here's a potential problem...what happens when thousands of trained killers who are accustomed to destroying at will without accountability are returned to our nation's soil?

Some have returned to the street gangs they were members of before the military allowed them to enlist, thanks to less stringent qualifications.

Let the Iraqis stand up for themselves! Get the contractors out first thing. Secondly, let's get out, or perhaps we'll be invited out.

Good, so does this mean the "war" is over?

What was that Bush neocon line again?......when the Iraqis stand up, we can stand down....
Didn't we hear Bush say that about 900 times?

Iraq is standing up for the rule of law in their own country against foreign mercenaries, against a greedy imperialist occupier. Good for them, about friggin time.

We accomplished our objective, we brought democracy to Iraq. Let's go home.

"We accomplished our objective, we brought democracy to Iraq. Let's go home."
I think that the second part of the first sentence, to this administration, means that "we have conquered Iraq". Ask Condi. Nobody can touch those people of the Blackwater.

Under what law does the state Department have the authority to grant immunity? Have I missed this explanation?
