Schumer Takes Aim At Senate's Top Republican

First Posted: 03/28/08 03:45 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:15 PM ET

Reflecting an increasingly aggressive strategy for the 2008 election cycle, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, acknowledged on Wednesday that the Democrats are gunning for the seat of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY.

Schumer cited McConnell as a Democratic target for the first time during an open press briefing, and took a swipe at the Senate GOP leader, suggesting that his proximity to President Bush and his sagging poll numbers put him directly in electoral limbo.

2007-10-31-mitch.jpg"One state that we have our eye on," said Schumer, "you've all seen the numbers, Sen. McConnell's numbers are not very good and we are hopeful of having a Democratic governor and we are going to go out and try to get a Democratic senator."

The statement reflects a growing desire within the Democratic circles to go after GOP congressional leadership in much the same way former minority leader Tom Daschle, D-SD, was targeted and upset in 2004. Already, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and independent 527 groups have run ads in Kentucky highlighting McConnell's support for the Iraq war and his work in sustaining President Bush's veto of the State Children's Health Insurance Program bill.

A recent Lexington Herald Leader survey put McConnell's state job approval rating at a pedestrian 46 percent approve/47 percent disapprove. The Senator's favorability ratings were not much better - 47 percent favorable/46 percent unfavorable.

Political observers cited a myriad of reasons for these mediocre numbers, primarily McConnell's high profile as minority leader - which often forces him to align with President Bush - as well as the senator's support for embattled Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher, who is currently embroiled in multiple ethics scandals. More recently, McConnell has found himself in a scandal of his own making after the Lexington Herald-Leader reported that he was "pushing $25 million in earmarked federal funds for a British defense contractor that is under criminal investigation by the U.S. Justice Department."

Signifying his tenuous standing, McConnell is already slated to begin running television advertisements in his state following the gubernatorial election.

Still, election watchers caution that Democrats face an uphill clime in efforts to unseat their chief Senate rival. For starters, there is no clear challenger to McConnell. Greg Stumbo, Kentucky's attorney general, has launched an exploratory committee. But those familiar with the race say he comes with some personal baggage, including an illegitimate child. Andrew Horne, meanwhile, is a veteran, but lost when he ran for Congress in 2006.

"I don't know how vulnerable McConnell is because the atmosphere right now is so poisonous with this governor's race that it may be clouding whatever the reality is," said Jennifer Duffy, managing editor of the Cook Political Report. "And once you get beyond this [governor's] race who is their candidate. You can't beat someone with no one."

Irrespective of the McConnell race, Schumer held forth optimistically about the current political landscape. Citing Republican obstructionism, a stagnate or worsening situation in Iraq, and a president who offers little if any political support to endangered GOP members, the DSCC chief predicted continued gains in 2008.

"This could be the seminal election," said Schumer. "The last seminal elections... they occur about once a generation, they change the tectonic plates of politics and they create a generation for one-party dominance."

Well, it's hard to say whether this contemptible buffoon will be defeated. After all, his ideological partner Bunning was re-elected by a close margin with the help of the benighted Dupes in Kentucky. Bunning (another Doctor No) is a gold-plated Stooge for the Republican Plutocrats and never saw a social safety net he wouldn't shred nor a labor union he wouldn't destroy in his own war against the middle class, which mostly comprised the fans who bought the tickets to the ball games in those days when he was a winning, champion pitcher. He wound up in the Baseball Hall of Fame. His bust in the Hall ought to be removed to an Ultra-Right Ideological Hall of Fame.

This is a little off topic, but it needs to be said.

If you have any friends in Kentucky, please email them and ask them to vote for Steve Beshear(D) for Governor on November 6th. McConnell has been in Kentucky campaigning for Ernie Fletcher(R) (the present governor). If Beshear wins on November 6th this will go a long way in helping to make sure that McConnell is defeated in '08.

I have 3 friends in Kentucky that I emailed yesterday. This may not seem like much, but if everyone does it, HOPEFULLY this will help in McConnell's defeat next year.

Some of you Dems have shown you are on too long of a chain. Have they rattled you enough yet. Will you charge out, gathering momentum.... to finally show them what lies at the end of the chain...Pitbull or poddle?

When is Larry Flynt going to drop the hammer on Mitchy? Or Rogers, the guy who outed Larry Craig? Maybe they're waiting, for maximum impact.

Having lived in Louisville KY for the last 7 miserble years. I have seen the damage that Mitch has caused. Funds for the VA here were diverted. We have illegals working at Churchill Downs. Where the Kentucky Derby is held. The area around the track has the highest crime rate in the city. Drug dealing is common place. He has prevented the DEA from coming in and the INS. His token wife Elaine Chao the Labor Secarty is an union buster and does not enfore fair labor practices at the UPS Gobal hub here. I have a house a can not sell because of the crime. The VA here is a joke. Ditch Mitch.

Mean Mitch is sitting on top of a huge campaign war chest and he'll spend every bit of it on negative ads...but he'll also benefit from a lot of free publicity by media outlets in news-starved rural areas scattered across Kentucky.

For those of you now cheering McConnell's early demise, remember to follow this campaign into 2008 and donate to the Democratic nominee.

Also keep in mind that anyone can from across America can contribute to his defeat. You can start now by donating to the DSCC.

There is an old Chinese proverb: “He who seeks vengeance must dig two graves: one for his enemy and one for himself.” While it would be tempting for payback for Daschle, cooler heads should prevail.

Senatorial incumbents have about a 75% chance of being reelected. Just being barely under a 50% approval rate at this stage is fool's gold. The money necessary to defeat McConnell could be put to better use helping Mary Landrieu keep her seat in Louisiana which is the only really vulnerable Democratic seat next year.

Spend the money on the open seats in Colorado, Virginia and New Mexico. Target Sununu in New Hampshire and Coleman in Minnesota. Those are real races that will keep the Senate Democratic and the SCOTUS out of the hands of the Revival Tent Republicans.

Mitch keeps defending this bankrupt administration. He should go, and looks like he needs to retire. With a half smart campaign, it shouldn't be difficult to ditch Mitch!

Like shooting fish in a barrel...No kidding, but Mitch the Bitch has big tobacco, and their deep pockets behind him. Kentucky, like Virginia, is undergoing demographic changes, and hopefully the patch of blue will be increasing in size. Wouldn't it be great to lose Mitch and his wingnut pal Bunning?

After listening and watching Mitch McConnell for so many years it's hard to believe he wasn't in the stall next to Larry Craig.

Here is a question: with the unrivaled loathing of all things Republican currently prominent in the country, why would you NOT put a serious candidate against every single one of them?

Yes, devote whatever resources necessary to get that scum out of Kentucky's delegation, but:

I know I'm saying this over & over, but I'm tellin you, in about 90 days when we run out of water here in ATL, we could run a shaved monkey and destroy the worst Senator Ever, Suxby Chambliss. This whole state could turn Blue in 90 days.
