Giuliani Faces Investigation Of 9/11 Radios

First Posted: 3/28/08 Updated: 5/25/11

In the midst of his presidential candidacy, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani now faces a looming government investigation into his handling of the radios used by firefighters on 9/11.

The investigation, which will examine how the FDNY ended up using faulty equipment during the terrorist attacks and why Giuliani gave a no-bid contract to Motorola for that equipment, has been endorsed by New York City Councilman Eric Gioia, chair of the city's oversight and investigations committee.

2007-11-01-giuin.jpg"I will do everything in my power to get answers, to get the truth," said Gioia, a Democrat. "These families deserve answers and really the entire city and our country deserve answers."

Calls for an investigation were first proposed by filmmaker Robert Greenwald who has documented Giuliani's handling of 9/11 in a series of shorts for Brave New Films. In The Real Rudy: Radios, Greenwald documents how radios used by the FDNY on 9/11 were the same ones that malfunctioned during the 1993 attack on the Twin Towers. When - eight years later - Giuliani finally purchased new communications equipment for $14 million from Motorola, it was never field-tested. A week later, the equipment was recalled after a firefighter's mayday went un-heard. Giuliani reissued the old batch of radios. And on 9/11 when a police helicopter warned that the North Tower could collapse, more than 120 firefighters remained inside.

"To know that we had failing radios in 1993 and did virtually nothing until September 11 is shocking to say the least," said Gioia. "To watch this documentary and see the important questions that were asked and seemingly unanswered and ignored for so many years, it's disturbing."

More than 20,000 people signed a petition demanding an investigation into Giuliani's handling of the FDNY radios. In an interview posted on YouTube, Gioia confirmed that he will take the steps to initiate public hearings, including sending out letters to fellow council members and requesting pertinent documents. Greenwald praised the initial steps forward.

"Brave New Films is thrilled with Councilman Gioia's response to our petition for a City Council investigation into Giuliani's failure to equip firefighters with the radios they needed on 9/11," Greenwald told the Huffington Post. "The groundswell of support for our petition shows the depth of Americans' desire for accountability."

Primer On The Antiquated FDNY Mobile Radio System

1) Each of the five boros of NYC have a dispatch office, with a dedicated transmitter site:
a) Manhattan: Central Park
b) Brooklyn: Near Prospect Park/Brooklyn Botanical Gardens
c) Queens: Forest Park
d) Bronx: unknown
e) Staten Island: Clove Lake Park

2) The FDNY dispatchers can speak to the fireman, through their portable radios, and the firemen can speak back to the dispatchers only. There is no fireman-to-fireman communication, except in low-power "talk-around" mode, from portable radio to portable radio, 5W. RF maximum.

3) This radio network design methodology is inferior.

4) Rudy "911" Guiliani has failed to provide the necessary leadership to compel the FDNY Comm. Director to implement a more modern system.

Both the NYPD and FDNY have been slaves to Motorola for at least 20 years. They create Request For Proposals which exclude all bidders for consideration, except for Motorola.

I'm retired NYPD. We had digital Motorola radios on 9/11 and they worked. I noticed that firemen carried the old analog Motorola radios we used to carried in the 80's. They never upgraded. Like most members of the NYPD I have a strong dislike for Rudy but I think this was upper management of the FDNY not Rudy's failing.

Let me "bottom line" it for all you Repub-li-pooches.

1) 911 was obviously an inside job (in spite of what Bill Maher and Bill Clinton have to say about it - I've lost all respect for both these people. Maher is afraid of losing his phoney-baloney job again, and Clinton is part of the New World Order).
2) George W. Bush knew about the inside job all along. Why else would he be "on camera" that morning, for all the country/world to see? Note, no change in his facial expression when told the plane had hit the building.
3) Rudy had his hand on the detonator that morning.
4) Nuff said......

This is what I wrote that didn't make it on the other Rudy post. It works better here anyway. In reply to his fumbling on the question about 9/12...

He couldn't say he was getting ready to get all the evidence shipped to Asia. Funny how steel beams came down in convenient 30 foot sections. Must have been all that thermite KSM planted.

I'm sorry I must be wrong about Rudy. He is a great American who doesn't have the neo-cons advisers Bush thought were too crazy

Rudy & his Giuliani Partners are serving Corporate America to the detriment of most Americans.

They were also paid by Big Pharma to deep-six legal importation of less expensive
Canadian RX medications a few years ago. http://todaysseniorsnetwork.com/guiliani_sells_out.htm

Bush's Scott & Mark McClellan are, according to the media, playing advisory roles
in Giuliani's campaign. The Brothers Two are about as inept at healthcare public policy
as any two shills for GOP corporate interests would be.

The Canadians and other nations in the world don't allow pharmaceutical companies to
price-gouge their residents. The U.S. has a monopoly on this practice.

On healthcare issues, he never seems to get it right:

Rudy has more ethical lapses than the entire team of ENRON and Arthur Andersen:

Rudy would never take money from a vendor that puts firemen in jeopardy? Like Rudy said, his radio worked fine, but after 9-11......

I don't see it on mamahuff yet but on other sites they have a story about the British government protesting a Giuliani political ad for falsely claiming a survival rate of only 44 per cent for prostate cancer in "socialized" medical system in Britain.

Actually the survival rate is the same as here and rising.

Imagine this bozo with his finger on the nuclear button.

Only the yahoos in the south actually believe this bozo can beat Hilary and, of course, the media have no intention of disabusing them of the notion so they can deliver a rose strewn path for Hilary's ascension to the throne.

For people -- Repugs, Moderates -- who consider the threat of another terrorist attack their main concern, and are supporting the '08 candidate whom they believe would be the best in keeping America/Americans safe, they are of extremely limited logic comprehension and abilities if their vote will be Giuliani.

911 proved Giuliani is an utter failure in leading and making good decision in such an emergency situation. He's anything BUT the person that all citizens should want in charge if we were to ever be attacked again.

The hardcore reality: MANY American lives could have been spared had a better decision-making leader been at the helms of NYC that day. Rudy did so many things wrong that day, not least of which:
-- Rudy should have ordered to have all firefighters out of both building/s before they collapsed, particularly out of the second one AFTER the first building already went down.
-- Rudy should have ordered to have the people in tower II to evacuate the building before it was hit, and AFTER tower I was hit and there were other suspicious off-course planes in the air.

LET'S HEAR THESE RADIO CONVERSATIONS. WE DESERVE TO KNOW. ALL CITIZENS DERSEVE TO KNOW THE INFORMATION HE WAS GIVEN, AND JUST HOW POOR HIS DECISION-MAKING WAS ON THE DAY.

Just walking around the streets with a mask on for the cameras, yeah, no thanks -- THIS is not the quality that people should be looking for in the country's next president if they are truly fear for safety from terrorism.

Motorola contract with NYC....14 million for 2700 radios? That's over $51000.00 per radio (probably worse than Air Force $600.00 hammers).

Someone, probably at both ends of the transaction.....got rich.
