Star Jones has been notoriously silent about her gastric bypass surgery — for years she denied it, and she only recently admitted that she had the surgery in a September 2007 article for Glamour. But her show today was the first time we have heard her speak publicly about the surgery and its impact on her life. Star (who was a size 24/26 and had to lose 160 pounds!) mostly wanted to react to the backlash she got from jealous, angry friends and urged her guest, a fellow gastric bypass patient, to seek counseling. Two choice quotes:

"It hurts my feelings to think that people never came up to me and said, 'You don't need to gain any more weight' but they sure as heck will say, 'You don't need to lose any more.'"
"Let the haters hate, girl, that's what they do. If you wake up and you got 20 haters, be mad because you need 20 more."

I think that in order to fully complete her beautifying methods, all of Star's loose skin should be straight pulled up, away from her belly, and stapled over her ugly face.

Well, this was a really good expose of American Values: Hatred and Ugliness. Is that what American Values are? You decide.

Next time you want to vent what is bubbling up out of you try it out first in front of a mirror and take a good look at yourself.

Next, notice how you feel! Not too well, I wager. You see, the girl you write about probably does not read any of this, and in any case you own what you write. You also feel what you write. You get the consequences of the feelings generated within yourself.

I think I must have heard somewhere that Jesus once said: *it is not so much what goes into a man, but what comes out of a man, that counts*. But you have to check this out. I am jewish.

This snotty, materialistic woman has the biggest undeserved ego of anyone I have ever seen.

This has-been gasbag's 15 minutes are about up.

It couldn't happen to a more deserving asshole.

Geez, if it weren't for THE VIEW and all of it's past and present co-hosts, what would Huffington do? This is getting so old.

I don't hate her for losing the weight or lying about it. I started hating her years ago when she smugly assumed that atheists were somehow immoral and not fit to be president ("I'd never vote for an atheist for president.")
Yeah--a Christian nut job is much better.
Kiss my fat @$$.

Star Jones was on Larry King a few months ago talking about her gastric bypass surgery, so it looks like she's lying again.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY is jealous of this broad. She was overpraised at some point in her life. And she's also a liar.

As a large person myself, I am happy for Star. I have never been a fan of hers, but I think she looks great now, compared to when she was last on The View. She looked like a poorly made up drag queen.

I have considered having the surgery, but getting insurance companies to pay for it is not easy. I only need to lose 100 lbs, and have been on every diet known to man. Some people need to lose 200 or more pounds, that's why I say "only 100 lbs."

I would never have the surgery other then I have many of the co-morbidities that go along with it, such as heart failure, diabetes, sleep apnea, arthritis and gerd.

I don't know why Star had the surgery, but if it makes her healthier and happier, then I'm all for it.

Jones' choice to get bypass surgery and lose hundreds of pounds is not the issue - it was the lying about how she lost all that weight that angers people.

As for the jealous, angry friends - that's stretching it. Anyone can chose to do the surgery thing.

Who is Star Jones?

You have to wonder what CourtTV thinks about Star, given that she was recently slapped with a $20,000 judgment for taking cash (I would call it stealing) and first class airline tickets from a group of teenagers in Detroit. Star was supposed to speak at their event, went to Detroit and enjoyed herself at the SuperBowl and never showed up for the event.

She's not only a liar, she's a thief.

NO reputable doctor will perform a gastric bypass on a patient who hasn't gone through counseling. This surgery is MAJOR, and it's potentially life-threatening. More often than not, it won't be performed unless the patient is morbidly obese, which means they'll die imminently anyway as a result of the extra weight they're carrying.

Once completed, your stomach will be able to hold only a few ounces of food at a time, so you'll have to eat about 6 times a day -- and many patients find they have suddenly become unable to tolerate certain foods because of the reaction their body has to it now. They find they have to intake a lot of their nutrients (protien is a common one) via supplements rather than as food because of what eating whole food does to them. Anybody tried protein supplements lately? Not exactly the greatest taste.

This is NOT a casual operation to undertake. It's an automatic lifestyle adjustment if the procedure is going to be successful.

I had a friend who underwent bypass surgery a few years ago; one of the problems she had was that her friends who were also large attacked her because of not being "happy with her body image" and crumbling to the dictates of societal norms. Her case happened to be anything BUT that -- had she not had the surgery, she would have died within a few months. I hope that Ms. Jones' future is brighter than what her "friends" would wish for her.

Sorry Star, but the "don't hate me because I'm beautiful" line was taken years ago. Could it be that your "friends" hate you because you're a pompous wind bag?

"jealous, angry friends" ???

I don't think those words go together.

A person should be able to make SAFE, HEALTHY choices about his/her life.

Gastric bypass in my mind would not be safe for me, just as liposuction. But for goodness sakes, if Star had done the due diligence on a proper surgeon, and if this was the best choice in terms of reducing her dangerous obesity, she should be LEFT ALONE by the vultures.

"She looks great," is all anyone should say.

{Applause}

Ugh.
