Iraq Signs

Opposition to the war in Iraq has reached an all-time high, according to the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Thursday morning.

Support for the war in Iraq has dropped to 31 percent and the 68 percent who oppose the war is a new record.

Despite the drop in violence in Iraq, only one quarter of Americans believes the U.S. is winning the war. There has been virtually no change in the past month in the number of Americans who believe that things are going badly for the U.S. in the war in Iraq.

The public also opposes U.S. military action against Iran. Sixty-three percent oppose air strikes on Iran, while 73 percent oppose using ground troops as well as air strikes in that country.

Overall, 56 percent, of Americans are dissatisfied with progress in the war on terrorism.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation telephone poll of 1,024 American adults was carried out over the weekend. The sampling error for the full sample was plus-or-minus 3 percentage points; some questions were asked of a half sample of approximately 500 respondents and carry a sampling error of plus-or-minus 4.5 percentage point.

End the war? Cheney hasn't even got started yet, for chrissakes! There's a whole new war to pursue, a War on Iran, and probably Syria to boot. The anti-war crowd, even if it exceeds 80% of public support, can't do much of a damn thing to stop Cheney-[bush]'s 'Plan for Iran'.

The loyal opposition, the Dems, are certified ultra-wimps that cave to the Bush Team at the first opportunity in any contention. But once the deed has begun, the 10,000+ target strikes within Iran probably with a good salting in of tactical nukes, what then? Could this be real?

Just for the trolls information.

There are around 3,000,000 expats and dual nationals living outside the US.

All of us are subject to local taxes [except diplomats]

We can still vote [if registered usually at your last state of residence] Pensions and other fiscal concerns are now treated by tax treaties.

We still have family back home, of course our views change, I for one stopped going to my local mega church and also stopped stoning liberals on Thursdays.

It's a globalised world, get used to it.

It is the Iraq war cost that has driven the dollar to half of its value relative to other strong currencies. What that means to me is that if we had not plunged into this war, the dollar would be twice as strong as it is today, and the cost of oil for American refiners would be half of what it is today, and the cost of gas at the pump would be half what it is now! This administration has acted detrimentally to the cause of the people of the United States of America whom they are pledged to serve. When those who serve the people, act against the fortunes of those they serve, that is called treason. We'll sort it all out soon!

It would be political suicide for the Dems to pull the troops out now. With both Iraq and American deaths down substantially in the past few months, the Republicans will accuse the left of pulling the rug out, just as some progress was being made.

While there will never be "victory" in Iraq but the surge has stopped the hemmoraging. From the average Iraqi's point of view, surely it's better to put up with the inconvenience and humiliaion of an occupation, than all out civil war.

If we leave, it won't end the war, but rather heighten the civil war. As big a mistake as invading was, leaving now would be a disaster.

Looks like my prediction that the Dow will be at 12,500 for Xmas was optimistic. Sorry.

Stocks extended their losses Thursday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke warned he expects a raft of economic troubles will cause business growth to slow

Yes. The American public is sick of the war.

The American public, slow as it is, is finally beginning to understand the deep, broad, and all encompassing incompetence, arrogance, selfishness, criminality, and evil that is the Bush/Cheney administration.

There is no corner of the US Government that little georgie and Lord Cheney haven't tainted.

Iraq is just the most visible and the most despicable. The untold deaths, misery, and destruction in Iraq are unforgivable. And the American public is starting to make its feelings known.

I see Pervez Musharraf has set a new election date of February 2008.

I suppose that is the earliest date he believes that it is possible to have all the opposition arrested.

Everything IS going great.

Iraq is pacified because there are walls segregating the sunnis and shias.

2.4 million refugees are scattered around the region.

The Iraqi government is coming close to not having a quorum because so many have left it.

Al Sadr sits, gathers forces and waits.

The US is going bankrupt financially and morally.

OBL sits gathers forces and waits.

Al Qaeda is stronger than ever.

Turkey is going to invade and occupy northern Iraq.

9/11 widows and hundreds of dead firefighters and policemen await justice and the time when the US government will consider their sacrifice high enough to avenge.

Iran is running centrifuges knowing that N. Korea was negotiated with because they had "the bomb".

Pakistan is a mess.

The dollar is becoming worthless.

The sub-prime housing scandal will outshine the S&L scandal. (both on Repooplicon watches)

The Saudis get rich and laugh their asses off while fomenting terrorism.

The middle east is a powderkeg waiting for a US airstrike match.

Going great for who you ask?

Follow the money.

and....have a nice day :D xxoo SI

Well the estimates by the state dept before the war of 300,000 + troops turned out to be correct.

The objections to Debaathification turned out to be correct.

The decent into sectarian regions has been confirmed.

The return of sharia law in the south has happened.

4.2 million Iraqi refugees.

The insurgents are still out there, the militia rule the South, The Kurds the north.

Turkey just waiting to invade at the next major PKK attack.

A US military close to breaking point.

The British were 14 yrs in Iraq last time. How does another ten to twelve years sound?

Someone mention Iran?

Does not matter one whit what the American people say, think or do. King George the Insane will have his way, no matter what. The Congress will rubber-stamp anything he wants, including the next 200 billion he is demanding.

I agree completely BUT...this is propaganda against the Dems when the real issue should be directed squarely at Bush!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

while we argue about the Dems fighting harder or softer with their scant majority...Bush is planning to invade a third country!!!!!!!!!!

ref : “2007 will be the deadliest year yet for US troops in Iraq.”

2007 will also be the costliest year for the U.S. Treasury. iirc, there is an historical anecdote in Albert Speer's Spandau: The Secret Diaries where he meets with the Führer and tells him, “We don't have enough gold to sustain the War on two fronts.”

For the troops, the daily report we hear about you is now only a single metric: the rate of your attrition. From the air, Baghdad looks like a lab rat's maze of blast walls, rubble-lined streets, checkpoints, traffic barriers and trenches. The only report we hear about you, the people who live there, is your rate of survival. We have a vague measure of the millions of you who have fled your homes; apparently, few Sunnis remain in your once-sovereign City.

From the Treasury, the only daily report metric we see is the devaluation of the U.S. dollar. In terms of GOLD/share, or GOLD/SqFoot ~ American equities and real estate asset values look to the rest of the world as if they have fallen off a cliff.

The Occupation of IRAQ is destroying the brand that was THE Military; and the U.S. Treasury is bleeding petro-dollars in a Mission to sustain attrition ~ a process whereby "winning" is resolved to be our now shared sacrifice, the day-to-day / paycheck-to-paycheck Mission of "surviving this".

Someone needs to tell the President : “We don't have enough oil to sustain The Occupation and defend the USD.”
