Lou Dobbs for President? Don't laugh. After months of telling reporters that he "absolutely" would not consider leaving his highly-rated CNN show in which he crusades against free trade and illegal immigration, Mr. Dobbs posted a commentary on his Web site last week predicting a surprise new presidential candidate in 2008. The mystery candidate is an "independent populist . . . who understands the genius of this country lies in the hearts and minds of its people and not in the prerogatives and power of its elites."

Friends of Mr. Dobbs say he is seriously contemplating a race for the first time, although it's still unlikely. They spin a scenario under which the acerbic commentator would parachute into the race if Michael Bloomberg, the New York billionaire and favorite of East Coast elites, enters the field as an independent. With Hillary Clinton continuing to score badly in polls in the categories of honesty and integrity, and with the public's many doubts about Rudy Giuliani and other GOP contenders, Mr. Bloomberg may well see an opportunity to roil the political waters by entering the race late. If so, Mr. Dobbs then sees a niche for a "fourth-party" candidate who could paint the three other contenders as completely out of touch.

Besides his mouth, has lou dobbs ever run anything? while conventional wisdom seems to relate many of the u.s.'s current problems on the dumb show going on in baghdad, dobbs seems to blame everything on mexico. although neither iraq nor mexico did anything to the united states, lou could have at least argued that because mexico is only one country away, aggresively taking them on would have made been cheaper.

LOU APPEALS TO POOR PEOPLE WHO ARE OUT OF WORK DUE TO IMMIGRATION. HE COULD GET 30 MILLION VOTES ON THAT ISSUE ALONE. I BELIEVE HE IS SINCERE

Watched a book review this morning on C-Span on the book "immigration Solution" by Heather Mac Donald and Steve Malanga. Perhaps after reading this book, we could have a more informed preparation for questions to ask the Presidential candidates. We need to have this issue settled once and for all before Congress starts more legislation to cement our Immigration Policy, and to learn exactly what America can do to promote a definative guide line for all who want to enter into our country and what it will do to the American workers as these pro and anti policies are made into law.

Lou needs to come out and definitively state that he's not running, or else he needs to quit his show, like Fred Thompson did with Law & Order. Either that, or CNN should start providing all of the other presidential contenders equal air time.

What has Lou ever done for this country besides bloviate about a few pet issues, and write books and be famous? If you gave me a TV show, I could probably spew some highly-charged pot-stirring BS that makes you think I'm on your side too. Does that qualify me to be President? Don't you sort of need some actual, you know, QUALIFICATIONS to be President? Or are we beyond that now? Jesus, people, even GWB was elected Governor of Texas first. Y'all are a cheap date if a TV show is all you need. Colbert for President! For real!

Hey Lou! Underneath every critical person is a petty jealous small minded person waiting to come out!

I don't get it. There's all this rancor about Lou Dobbs among people who consider themselves liberals or lefties, yet his positions are more of a threat to corporatists, Republicans, and the entrenched lobbyist-controlled Washington political elite. He is a nationalist, no doubt, but more to the point, he is a populist who is trying move our government back toward policies that serve the voters and away from serving special interests. I don't see what the Left has to fear from any of that?

Illegal immigration fails almost every test of the social contract that made America great. These immigrants cannot vote, they cannot organize for higher wages, they cannot even lobby for better working conditions. They can lower the wages of American citizens. They can degrade social services and schools by exerting a burden greater than their contribution to taxes. And, in the absence of any workable border controls, they will forever be losing their jobs to the next wave of immigrants, legal or not.

This is all music to the ears of corporations, the casino owners who support Harry Reid and the agri-business magnates who finance Mitch McConnell. That's why Comprehensive Immigration Reform is such a battle cry for them. Don't think that they ever shed a tear for the poor struggling worker, American or otherwise. The path to citizenship they claim to offer is too expensive and too convoluted for most illegals, so their future is "work and keep your mouth shut". How does any of this strengthen the worker? How does any of this raise the American standard of living?
How do trade agreements like NAFTA that put Mexican farmers out of work and force them to move Norte serve American interests? These are the questions that Lou Dobbs has been asking, in a rising voice. I think people who claim to feel concern for worker's rights should ask themselves the same questions.

If Lou Dobb's "seriously considering a presidential run" is not reaching out for a power grab disguised in what he calls an understanding of the hearts and minds of the nation's people, i don't know what is!!!
Come off it Lou. You know you are reaching for the stars, err, i mean: POWER (more than what you already have at CNN) ... And come off it also Lou.. you are as heck, just like Blitzer, ain't no gadfly of honesty, integrity, or truth.

The race might get interesting if we have enough minor party candidates in there. As for Lou "Blame Mexico" Dobbs, how come his concerns about border security don't extend to the greater border to the north? is it inconceivable that a blue eyed albanian islamic fundamentalist could cross that border? shouldn't we build a fence across there and throw away even more taxpayer money? The whole border security issue is a farce; Dobbs does have some valid arguments when it comes to the economic issues involved in illegal immigration, but the solution is to attach severe penalties to employers who hire the illegals and beef up immigration enforcement units to arrest and heavily fine those employers. that's when the nonsense stops. dobbs knows this to be true, but give him credit for opposing NAFTA and the other bad trade agreements.

"With Hillary Clinton continuing to score badly in polls in the categories of honesty and integrity"

Hmmm. I didn't see that poll and doubt there is one. I'm not a Hillary supporter, but it would be nice if on a supposedly progressive site that Republican talking points weren't slipped into every article.

Oh, puh-leeze, let him run. Dems won't vote for him in the general because of what he stands for ... and Republicans will be split amongst allllll the independents who make vanity runs because ... uh ... because they can. We really *should* encourage this sort of thing ... just like the Republicans encouraged Ralphie in 2000.
