Former Sen. John Edwards, who ran for president in 2004 with an unfailingly upbeat campaign and then joined the ticket of his party's nominee, has come back this year with a fighting edge - an edge which Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York has likened to "mudslinging... right out of the Republican playbook.''

"I don't think so,'' Edwards said of the complaint which Clinton lodged about his criticism for her in the debate of the Democrat candidates in Las Vegas last week. "The idea that that this is mudslinging... We're talking about substantive issues of war,'' Edwards said on CBS News' Face the Nation today. "If anybody, including Sen. Clinton, thinks this is mudslinging - this is milquetoast, compared to what we're going to see next fall.''

Read about Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer criticizing the "acrimonious" tone of debate between the Democratic candidates, citing Obama in particular .

Did everybody forget 8yrs. of the Clintons? There is no difference between one party or the other. Right or left,Liberal or Conservative. it's the same old fight it's always been. The wealthy Corporate interests, and thier Politicians against the working people. Even if you make 200k per year, your still working for it.These people make 200k per month, just on thier investments, and never go to work. These politicans must go to corporations for money to run.Thier compromised.

What would Edwards know about how tough it will be for Hillary? Does he think that she doesn't know it or that she won't be prepared?

Nevertheless, it's nice that he is telling her now. But, does he have to take a page out of the Republican play book to make a point. Isn't it rather clear his campaign is over?

John Edwards was a totally lackluster US Senator. But he was a better canidate than his record shows when he ran for Pres and then for VP last time. Too bad that he allowed Kerry to relegate him to the boonies. He might have been better prepared this time around.

Nice try Hillary. Call any meaningful questioning of your voting record "mudslinging" in hopes the other candidates will bow down to her royal highness and play the game Hil's way. Don't let her get away with this!!

In fact, I have some other questions I'd like Edwards and Obama to ask Hillary:
1) What happened to the release of your personal records from when you were First Lady? What are you hiding?
2) I read on another credible web site that many of the big donors to your campaign are the same REPUBLICANS that gave big donations to Bush. Why are rich Bush Republicans backing you??
3) I read on Huffington's site that Bill had a meeting recently with one of the biggest anti-Clinton critics from his former presidency, Richard Mellon Scaife. Why were the 2 of them meeting? It was supposedly about charity, but was it really more to do about the fact that Mellon Financial is one of the top 10 financial companies drowning (subprime loans = more than 3 times the assets) in the subprime loan mess? Is he looking for a pre or post election bailout or payoff??
4) Mark Penn, Burson-Marsteller's top executive, is chief strategist for the Hillary Clinton campaign. A recent article in The Nation explained how Penn uses bogus polling and other dirty tricks to manipulate pubic opinion and "sell" candidates and ideas. They claim he is the man behind the PR campaign that created a false illusion, as far back as January, that Clinton was the "front runner" and had broad support with the public. Why is Hillary using an executive from a PR firm that is known for tactics like these? A firm with close times to the White House and Karl Rove???

Hillary's campaign contributions, voting record and investments say everything that needs to be said about her candidacy. She is a champion of the rich, corporate Republicans (and Democrats). You want change? Find another candidate.

As to CNN - they should change the name to Clinton Nominating Network.

Mudslinging is the last resort of a desperate politician who desperately wants the job, and has NO plausible reason to have that job.
It all boils to this: WE ARE EITHER READY TO ELECT AND FOLLOW A WOMAN PRESIDENT, OR WE ARE NOT.
WE ARE EITHER READY TO ELECT AND FOLLOW A BLACK PRESIDENT, OR WE ARE NOT.
Because all the white guys, Rep. and Dem., are a bunch of pastey faced, narrowminded, greedy, sanctimonious fear-mongering, mooks, who WANT the job, but will not DO the job.
I am a white anglo-saxon male, and I for one AM ready to elect a woman, or a black man, (a black woman would be really great), bacause the white, rich, 'Gentry' have done nothing in the last 50 years (my age) but F*#K this planet up, and I'm tired of it.
We sit, and we watch, and we tell ourselves that 'there's nothing we can do,' as our country floats down the toilet bowl, with incredible speed, as of late, and if we do not get off our collective ASS, we are going to be left out in the cold, shivering our 'chi-chis' and 'cahones' OFF, while the Freddy Thompson's, John McCain's, and Karl Rove's of this world make off with all the money, food, water, oil, land, air, sky, and life, and laugh at the rest of us for not knowing when we are being sodomized, in public. For FREE!!! Not even a reach-around and a piece of bread for our trouble.
This country has been extremely lucky to have made it this far during this regime. Sorry -- 'presidential administration.' We're supposed to dead by now, according to Cheney's book. And if this IDIOT citizenry -- electorate -- doesn't wake the frick up soon, there is going to be NOTHING ON THIS PLANET LEFT TO WAKE UP TO.
And You know it.

throwing mud at clinton is telling the truth about her??? ha that sounds more like a phrase taken out of the republicans book. Edwards needs to stand strong and push back and keep on calling hillary's record cause there is no other way to fight the clinton machine. she will keep us in iraq, she will not do anything about immigration, she will continue to protect corporate america without any regards to the middle class, she will continue a more secretive WH than the one we have, she will not do anything to liberate the country from oil dependency, she is a disgrace and the two pluses her campaign have are money to buy the WH just like Bush did and Bill who up until today continues to be very popular in the country and in the world; none of which thanks to her own merits.

Can't HufPo correct titles once they're known to be wrong? He said "milk toast", which is a bland dish given to those with digestion problems. And which makes much more sense than Milquetoast, the invented name of a cartoon caracter.

CNN is full of crap, Wolf Shitzler in particular. (I don't watch him very often anyway, due to his propensity to cut people off just as they start to articulate a complete thought).

What I really want to know is: Why did CNN allow the booers and hecklers to remain in the audience? A judge would clear a courtroom of that behavior. This is (supposedly) a serious debate for the highest office in the land and/or world, not an episode of Jerry Springer.

I am disgusted with CNN for this complete lack of professionalism in allowing biased disruptive behavior to happen. Why is no one talking about this?

After watching Wolf Shitzler interview Edwards Sunday morning and then spend the next 30 minutes attacking him using clips from the debate (with Edwards not available to respond) I will no longer watch CNN at all.

What a pathetic joke it is now in comparison with its original concept.

I like Edward but then I have no real issue with any of the candidates. Howeve, Edwards is getting a reputation of being loud, noisy, angry, and this is not going to help his cause.

Not to disagree with Clinton, but Edwards is right. This is to help Clinton - not hinder.

The problem is the weakness that moderates have. Karl Rove and the Republicans use moderate compromisers in the way scientists use laboratory rats. They are extremely easy. Just scare them a little and watch them become sock puppets. Seduce them a little with the notion of lower taxes and watch them flock. It doesn't matter if in the end it drives taxes upward.

Now perhaps you are a little offended here, but maybe if you're a thinking human being you are really an independent. There is a big difference. An independent chooses issues and comes to a decision independently. A moderate compromiser will simply split the difference without thinking.

The Republicans argue (with some measure of intelligence) of the importance of national security. It makes sense. Democrats argue what America should represent - freedom, human rights, fair market values. That makes sense too. Independents understand balance.

But in confusion - in the heat of the debate when it is time to start throwing the smelliest muck - weak moderate compromisers will always fail to see when America is throwing out the baby for the bathwater and come to the rescue of fearful Republicans who need security.

So there is much to be concerned about here - no debasing Edwards or Clinton here.

Edwards is not mudslinging at Hillary when he only tells the truth. Actually there is nothing good to be said about Hillary other then the fact she is Bill's wife.

I think Kucinich put Edwards in his place. The real question should be how do we make sure Kucinich wins the nomination. See:

The dollar is collapsing (see Bonddad's article in Business). We need a president who is the most unlike Bush. That isn't Sen. Clinton.
