Australian PM Who Backed Bush, Iraq Invasion, Set To Lose Election

Australia's conservative government remains well behind the opposition Labor Party and looks likely to be swept from office in parliamentary elections on Nov. 24, a new poll showed on Tuesday.

With just four days of campaigning left, support for Prime Minister John Howard's conservatives had risen 1 point to 46 percent, while support for Kevin Rudd's Labor had dropped by a point to 54 percent on preferences, a Newspoll showed. If the result was confirmed on polling day, Labor would win 87 seats in the 150-seat lower house, ending 11 years of conservative government and Howard's hopes of a fifth term.

The poll in the Australian newspaper showed support for Howard as Prime Minister had risen 2 points to 42 percent, while support for Rudd had fallen by the same amount to 46 percent.
