LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan's Jan. 15 presidential primary can go forward, the state Supreme Court decided Wednesday, keeping alive the state's bid to be one of the 2008 campaign's first contests.

The court decision should make it easier for New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner to schedule that state's primary, which New Hampshire law requires to be the nation's first. Gardner has been waiting to see what the Michigan courts would do.

The high court's decision should clear the way for the Republican and Democratic parties to take part in the Jan. 15 primary. Both have already filed letters with the secretary of state saying that's their plan.

However, by holding its primary so early _ in violation of the national parties' rules _ Michigan stands to lose half of its delegates to the Republican National Convention, reducing the number to 30, and all of its 156 delegates to the Democratic National Convention.

Yesterday, New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner announced that there was no chance of a January 15 NH Primary.
UPDATE: He is scheduled to announce the NH Primary date today at 3:30 pm.

After hearing the case last week, the Michigan Court of Appeals ultimately ruled against the primary date, at which point the state appealed to the Michigan Supreme Court.

Well being from Michigan this does not bother me. I plan on voting in the Republican primary and casting my ballot for Ron Paul. They can count it if they want. Any Democrat is better then any Republican so I don't really care who gets the Dem nomination, just want to mess with the Repugs.

This irks me to no end, all sides of it.

Why can"t there be change? Where is it written in the heavens that Iowa and New Hampshire always get to be the belle of the ball? Additionally, what right does the Democratic Party of Michigan think that it has to ruin the people of Michigan"s ability to participate in one of the most important elections in the history of our country by making a change that leaves them irrelevant to the primary process?

Michigan is an important state that can turn an election just as fast as Ohio. While mostly a blue state, some of the most right-wing neo-conservative (fascist) Republicans out there hail from Michigan.

And the losers, of course, are the voters¦
Pathetic. The Michigan legislature and governor have become malignant to the residents of my home state. Shame!

You know Hillary is s'posed to be inevitable but this primary frontloading just seems to make it more so. Will Iowa mean anything this year?
