The chairman of a committee formed to fight a ballot initiative to change how California's electoral college votes are apportioned has asked the city attorney here to investigate a report that a group collecting signatures for the initiative has offered food to homeless people in exchange for signing the petitions.

The Republican-supported initiative would replace California's winner-take-all system of allocating its 55 electoral college votes with one that allots the votes by Congressional district.

I thought one had to have a "fixed" address to secure any Voter Registration. How can homeless people be considered as having any fixed address? Thats a big problem with getting any form of state sponsored health benefits, or even getting a job. Most Employers wont hire homeless, and the State will not send your check to "general delivery". Thats the entire reason homeless feel "invisible" - no fixed address.

I just got a call at home ON THANKSGIVING from some bitch at a GOP call center saying:

"Don't you think it's just WRONG that Americans are ALLOWED to buy medicine made in other countries like China and Canada?"

I was, like, "Huh?"

She said:

"I agree, it is a tough one! We want your opinion. Shouldn't it be ILLEGAL to buy medications from another country besides the U.S.A.?"

I was so shocked, and pissed off, that I didn't even want to help her ass. So I played Dumb Republican, saying "Gosh I don't know!"

She said "Happy Thanksgiving!" and I hung up, thinking that I will never vote GOP again.

Is there nothing so disgraceful, so immoral, so low - that the Repukes would not go there?! Just when you think they cannot possibly stoop any lower - they find a way to descend to new depths of immorality.

I've got bad news for Republicans. According to the Constitution, the state legislators get to decide who receives the Electoral Votes.

This can't be legally decided by referendum, it has to be decided by legislation. Even if this wins by a landslide, the first challenge to it in court would render it against the Constitution, and it would be nullified. And don't worry, it wouldn't go to the SCOTUS, because even the lowest federal court (and even state courts, for that matter) would throw it out.

Dave Gilliard, a Republican strategist, states that he doesn't believe that initiative supporters would bribe homeless with food? He's got to be kidding me? The SOBs running the GOP robbed two elections and he doubts his people would bribe homeless? His fucking people would tern the homeless into soylent green if they could get away with and not lose one iota of sleep. Someone needs to explain to this asshole that his people are a bunch of amoral, corrupt, lying, creeps. I would believe anything the GOP claims and I only half believe anything Democrats claim.

If we didn't have an Electoral College this wouldn't be an issue. The E.C. is an immoral institution that was created to give "slave states" a veto power over the Presidency. It has nothing to do with "fairness" or "making sure small states are campaigned it."

Progressive and liberals worth their salt should be campainging to abolish it and go to directly popular vote in November with a runoff in December if no one gets 50% of the vote (or use ranked-choice voting in the November round like Ireland and Australia do.)

After Bush was appointed President by a partisan Supreme Court, despite having lost the popular vote, the Democrats did not to try to change the system for the better.

The Electoral College is a part of America's racist past.

Not enough is being mentioned of a counter-initiative proposed for the ballot that would award California's electoral votes to the national popular vote winner (once enough states totalling up to an electoral college majority agree to do the same). If 270 electoral votes go to the national popular vote winner, then we have a truly national election where every vote is equally important, and there are no more "swing" states or states where a vote counts more in Delaware than Texas because there is smaller ratio of "elector" to voter.

Sure the GOP measure is a blantant, cheap, disgusting power grab.

But what are Democrats doing any different to change things for the better? The Electoral College is an immoral institution from our segregationist, slave-owning history. Once the Dems get serious about a direct popular vote for President (hopefully with a runoff, "istant" or "two-round), then I will listen to them bitch about what the GOP is doing.

It's not enough to be less bad than the Republicans anymore.

Another reason why i am voting Green.

It's a slippery slope. If the homeless can vote then they can sign petitions as well.

The Repukelicans stole the election in 2000 and 2004 with disenfranchisement of minorities and the poor. Noe those crooks can add bribery to the changes to be brought against them. As if.

I assume that CA has the same rules pertaining to collecting signatures on ballot initatives as FL does. Meaning that only registered voters can sign the petition. And to be a registered voter you must have a verifiable address, as well as a picture ID. I don't know if a homeless shelter qualifies as a verifiable address. But I do know that when you fill out a voter reg application, you are not registered until you receive you voter card in the mail. I just hope that the Secretary of State for CA makes sure that all signatures are valid!

I've never seen the Republicans so interested in helping the homeless before. Of course, they first had to figure out a way to use them for their own benefit, in exchange for that help.

This is the GOP version of welfare...public assistance.

That's right. The GOP is using some of the most vulnerable among us to sign something that in the long wrong will work only against their best interests and the country's.
Sounds like a typical Rovian ploy.

So that's why the GOP ruined the economy....

Kinda seems like a stupid strategy, yeah they can sign it and register to vote but somethings gonna look VERY strange when they verify signatures and addresses (if any) and can't be verified-as non existent or a vacant lot (ie 112 300th St in San Pedro-which would have them living out in the ocean-there is no 300th St.). Besides it's typical republican-they give em unhealthy junk food made by giant corporate food companies.

Signature gatherers are paid $3.75 for each signature. IF, and this is a big if, the "homeless" people who live at the missions and assorted charitable institutions in this area are registered voters, they most certainly are entitled to sign the petition to get this initiative on the ballot.

If there are enough valid signatures then it goes on the ballot. Then the voters in California will make the decision if they want their electoral votes apportioned in this way.

Now that is truly the Republican dream...Americans doing their bidding for food.

These people are disgusting! This initiative needs to be thrown in the trash, along with the GOP.

On the upside, at least the GOP knows now the homeless DO exist...
