Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee so far is the only Republican presidential candidate scheduled to meet in Iowa with a group of retired generals and admirals to discuss military detention and interrogation policies.

Human Rights First, a non-partisan human rights advocacy group organized the meetings. It invited all of the presidential candidates to participate in the meetings.

Were in the 21st Century and what constitutes torture hasn't been established yet? Please.

I was in the middle of a telephone conversation with Jesus. Well we were really having a good talk when he told me to hold; he had a call coming in. Wow, I thought. Someone has his number. He would never give me his number and from what I understand most others don't get it either. You know, "Don't call me, I'll call you". Said I needed to have faith that my thoughts would be heard in lieu of a phone conversation. But he did call me every once in a while.

Turns the call waiting was a call from a guy named Huckabee. Jesus told me later that he's had lots of chats with him. The Huck briefed him on an upcoming meeting on torture, Huck wanted advice, and Jesus said, "Hey, Huck man, I know torture!" Let me know how the meeting turns out and I'll craft something for you. Sounds like you want something that will make most voters who might think of voting for you happy. I know how they think. I'll bless you with just the right position to take on the alleged torture you described. Have faith. Oh, and by the way, if I don't get right back to you after you brief me, go to the book. You'll find something in there to support whatever position you take.

ASIDE: I saw him once. Yep, a vision. He was wearing a white robe. I asked him why he didn't have a red robe because lots of good things on earth are represented by red. We have politicians wearing red ties, red states, that kind of thing. He said he like to wear a red robe but the fookin devil decided to wear one and now he won't. And blue won't do at all.

I woke up and counted my change. Must have made a dozen stops that night. Confusing. A dream? A vision? Depends on who I might be talking to. Maybe I'll go into politics.

Of all the presidential republican candidates, I think that Huckabee has the best chance of being their nominee. He is the dark horse in the race that has shown gains in the polls among republicans. His performance at the CNN/You Tube debate was the best of all present. I guess being a minister/politician has honed his oratorical skills . . . the dramatical pauses, his quips, the candence of his voice, the folksy pose, all guaranteed to draw in the conservative republican voting block. He sort of reminds me of a Ronald Reagan wanna be.

I am encouraged that men of such high ranks and expertise are questioning the policies of a Republican administration, given that so much of the military complex has, in general, been decidedly Republican in their thinking. These retired generals clearly are putting their ethical standards and support of the law above their political views. I wish they had been so outspoken in 2004 rather than sitting idly by while a silver star winner was being politically waterboarded by the folowers of the Commander In Chief.

Why are the other Republican candidates not interested in hearing this discussion? Rhetorical question.

If Huckabee meets with Human Rights First, it could cost him some Republican support. It is clear from the Republican "debates," that most Republicans love the idea of torture. So, Huckabee may see this as a Sister Souljah moment.

"...a Sister Souljah moment is a politician's public repudiation of an allegedly extremist person or group, statement, or position perceived to have some association with the politician or their party. Such an act of repudiation is designed to signal to centrist voters that the politician is not beholden to traditional, and sometimes unpopular, interest groups associated with the party. Though, such a repudiation runs the risk of alienating some of the politician's allies and the party's base voters." (Wikipedia)

Huckabee may even be sincere. However he embraces all the tragic ignorance of the anti-science and anti-rational "religious right." He has a good chance of ending up the Republican nominee.

Any viable candidate for the presidency should discuss and present his/her views about torture. It is a real issue that not only affects our standing in the world, but also defines us as a nation. Will we pursue any means necessary to attain an end, which is questionable?
Those individuals subjected to torture, humiliation, degrading treatment, beatings, deprived of sleep, food, water, or reliving themselves will say or do anything to stop their maltreatment (give false confessions, provide false information or agree to anything their captors and torturers want from them). At best, the information derrived from such techniques is either false or unreliable.
We, as a nation, have lost all moral authority to complain about or protest to other nations who engage in torture or "advanced interrogation techniques," as is now the term, for the purposes of suppressing the human rights of individuals.
We have a Constitution which prohibits the use of "cruel and unusual punishment," and have signed international treaties which decry the use of torture (even against enemy combattants). We've violated our oaths and treaties by engaging in such reprehensible actions.
Are we a moral nation? NO! Do we abide by our oaths and treaties? NO! Do we really protect our citizens by such disgusting and immoral conduct? NO! In fact, due to the world's disdain and disgust at our actions, we're more likely to be targets of further condemnation and retaliation for our dismantling of human and civil decency.

All made-for-tv,poll-driven garbage. They gather in a room, eat some donuts, talk awkwardly, then adjourn. Then they all shake hands and Huckleberry walks outside to where cameras are waiting. Hucklberry says something like,"I learned alot,", or "It was very productive," or some bullshit. Then it's off to the next event. Mr. Bible doesn't give two whits about whether or not the US is waterboarding. And if, God forbid he makes it to the White House, he isn't going to care then either. Campaign circle-jerkin'.
