Will Smith: "I've Never Viewed Myself As Particularly Talented"

Will Smith says he's not a great actor -- but he's a hardworking one.

"I've never viewed myself as particularly talented. I've viewed myself as ... slightly above average in talent," the 39-year-old actor tells CBS' "60 Minutes" in an interview scheduled to air Sunday.

"Where I excel is with (a) ridiculous, sickening work ethic," Smith says. "While the other guy's sleeping, I'm working. While the other guy's eating, I'm working. While the other guy's making love, I mean, I'm making love, too, but I'm working really hard at it!"

Funny you say that Will, because we don't think you're particularly talented either. Certainly not talented enough to be paid the big dollars you've been paid.

It's your character that we love... you're just a helluva nice guy! For that alone I'll pay to see you in a movie.

Thanks for the honesty -- it's something Hollywood seems to be missing nowadays.

Will Smith is a decent actor, better than some, but not in the same class as Denzel and Don Cheadle, or even Jamie Foxx at his best.

Smith's biggest problem is that he's a wimp. He chickened out of a 2-second closed-mouth kiss with another actor in "Six Degrees." The director tried to cover up Smith's cowardice with a camera trick. It's so fake. The two guys look like they're head-butting each other.

T Roll. I'm not sure why you think a forty year old man with a wife and two kids should be gangsta, but obviously you don't know anything about Will. I know the streets of West Philly-"gangsta", and attending Overbrook High is truly "Gangsta" in it self, partner!

Talented or not, I have always found him to be more than a little self-absorbed. But, then again, what celebrity isn't?!

In todays movie markets, talent has very little to do with how much the film grosses. Hype is what brings in the crowds. Sure, it helps a great deal to have a marketable actor in the film, which Will Smith is, but it's still all about PR.
Think about how many films that grossed stupid amounts of money that didn't get any awards to speak of... except maybe special effects or costumes.
At least Will is in the right place at the right time and is getting some good exposure in films. While I don't think he is a "great" actor, he's coming along quite nicely so far.
He does have terrific potential and I hope to see him doing some more challenging stuff in the future. But in the meantime, rake it in, dude. Action/adventure stuff does make for a good paycheck, for sure.

Nice to know we share that perspective...and while I don't think he's particularly talented, neither is he particularly bad, and once he gets better material and matures, he shows taht talent only talkes yo so far...there must be drive and opportunity. I have no apprehension about admiring his verve...and actually loook forward to his performances in the future.

Will Smith has no acting talent. There's nothing particular about that.

Huffpo PLEASE.
Headline should read "Will Smith Humble".
Not "Will Smith Talentless".

"Barrack Obama Talentless" would be a valid headline. Obama thinks Will Smith will play him in "Obama the Movie"; actually it will be Martin Lawrence.

Who writes your headlines. The same guy who writes the supermarket tabloid headlines.

Well, some folk are never happy. For once you have a leading black celebrity figure that is not portrayed as a gansta, look at me I'm the shit, yo I'm a bad mamma jamma, and says something that is humble and reinforces hard work ethic, family, humility and honor (all the things you white folk dish on black folk for not being -- yeah, you know who you are!), and what do people do (mostly white folk, I'm sure), they still bag on him.

Aside from people making legitimate criticism, the rest of you are all haters. Makes me think there's nothing that will make white folk happy and we should just stop trying. Which is just as well anyway, becuase you're all headed to the dustbin, baby. The dustbin o' history.

this guy is a movie star not an actor.

as a rapper he was as vanilla as they come.

hollywood pegged him as the non-threatening black male actor of his generation that they could sell to middle america. talent has fuck all to do with it.

just smile and keep making those wisecracks, fresh prince.

Have any of you even seen any of the good movies that Will Smith has been in? Do any of you realize that he has actually been nominated TWICE for an academy award for best actor? Go check out Ali and The Pursuit of Happiness. I have my problems with both of those movies, but Smith shows in each that his talent is certainly not overrated. Yes, it would be great if he consistently chose more challenging roles, but his poor choices don't make him untalented. His work in Six Degrees was the first evidence of his range.
