The Dixie Chicks have a new controversy on their hands. In particular, lead singer Natalie Maines has started a defense fund for three Arkansas men that she (and many others) believe were wrongly convicted of killing three children in 1993.

Maines writes her plea on the Dixie Chicks Web site, which has already been answered by several celebrities including, I am told, Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Eddie Vedder, Jack Black and Henry Rollins.

"I'm writing this letter today because I believe that three men have spent the past 13 years in prison for crimes they didn't commit," Maines' message begins.

"Nothing else! Just us, the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark!... All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up. ..."

There are far too many innocent people who end up on death row- good for Natalie - she's a women of principle and conviction.

She's not about status quo or being PC. Being PC is what made Congress pass the Patriot Act, The Military Commissions Act and other legislative disasters that have pushed America into an increasingly fascist state.

I'm a flaming liberal and I think these guys are GUILTY. I'm also a big DC fan, but I respectfully disagree with them on this cause.
Damien Echols wasn't just a creepy "goth kid" who wore black. He had a history of serious mental illness. He hinted that he was involved in the murders prior to his arrest. After his arrest, he said he always knew he would be famous with an evil glint in his eyes. There was plenty circumstantial evidence in this case.

Finally the Dixie Chicks do something good. There are people wrongly convicted of murder. If their fund can identify and get false convictions overturned freeing innocent people that will be great.

I wish the Magic Internet Fairy would pop out of the keyboard every time someone decided to hit enter before thinking, and then proceed to give the offender a nasty Magic Internet Fairy electric shock.

How sad to read the posts below. Once upon a time, this country actually believed and insisted every person convicted of a crime had the right to defend themselves against their accusers. Bush has done more than bankrupt our treasury, it seems. We are a souless nation.

Thanks Natalie!

Who is Lori Davis?

"Let's face it, most people who would marry someone on death row - people think there's something terribly wrong with them. "

Yep.

Time and time again, we have been shown that the weaknesses of the American judicial system.

Why is it so hard to believe that once again, the system has got it wrong.

I really respect the Dixie Chicks for what they're doing. Its hard to support these men especially with what the press could make of this.

Good for the Dixie Chicks! They deserve a lot of respect for being so outspoken so early, and having to take so much abuse because of their opposition to the President and war in Iraq. Keep it up ladies!

This is the most irresponsible thing HuffPo has ever done. If you had said West Memphis 3 instead, and provided a link, people would learn something. Instead, you practice O'Reilly-style "journalism". Revolting.
