Whoever wrote that missed a central part of joke writing: Something about the joke needs to be funny. I didn't know the writers strike applied to political campaigns.

Yeah they 'Joked' about it in an otherwise serious press release? Right. I'm sure they'd have wasted resources on a bad joke that would have been making fun of themselves. Brilliant.
