Vice President Cheney today predicted Iraq will be a self-governing democracy by the time he leaves office, calling the current U.S. surge strategy "a remarkable success story" that will be studied for years to come.

In an interview with Politico, Cheney offered a remarkably upbeat view of Iraq, despite continued violence and political paralysis in the war-torn nation.

this is Joe Biden's plan for ending Iraq - not just words. In the Spring of 2007, Joe Biden met with 5 members of the UN Security Counsel and presented his plan - they all agreed that it was a good plan that they would support.

In October of 2007 Biden also got the Senate to pass with 75 votes legistlation that endorses his plan (getting both Democrats and Republicans to agree), Clinton and Dodd supported his plan, but Obama didn't vote.

Contrary to what Cheney is saying, Americans are still dying in Iraq, 4.5 million Iraqi are refugees, 600,000 dead, and we need to do major, major repair work for the damage we have done by blowing up their infrastructure, electricity, water, etc. This is a major humanitarian crisis in Iraq that Joe Biden addresses in his plan. He is the only candidate with a comprehensive plan that is supported by Congress and world leaders. He can make it work.

Abandoning Iraq versus healing Iraq are two different objectives. We have to take responsibility for what Bush has broken.

The gypsy fortune teller, cheney, does not have a great running record of predictions. Still looking for the VAST STOCKPILES of WMD???

Damn! This is very bad news because Cheney is always wrong about everything. So, it means Irak WON'T be a self-governing democracy in 2009. Damn!

of course in 09 cause they will be gone. so if in 09 iraq cant govern itself yet, which they wont, it'll be the next administration's fault.

Yeah, right Dick! And the war will be over in 6 months; and Saddam helped with 9/11; and you had special info about proven WMDs in Iraq; and the US made progress from 2003 to 2006; and Al Quaeda was severely weakend worldwide; and the Admin protects the civil rights of Americans; and the Taliban is on the run in Afghanistan; and your admin did not create a 2nd 9/11 in American blood in that pathetic, brutal war of adventure.

Hopefully, Iraq WILL be self-governing in 2009 because the US will find the courage and good sense to leave!

whats more important. what Cheney said or what happens in Iraq? Some here are focusing on proving cheney wrong. the real issue is the outcome in iraq.

He's screwed up again, the answer for him and the little Texaas hobbit is as follows. We (U. S. military) will be out in 2008, any fixing will be done by the Iraq bunch of democratically elected war lords.

So the old man and the hobbit will be in jail after there trial. They will be brought to justice.............

"...calling the current U.S. surge strategy 'a remarkable success story'" -- Considering the previous strategy was "be welcomed as liberators", I'd have to agree. Of course, that's grading on a curve. In most situations, bringing the bombings down to fewer than a thousand a month is less than remarkable.

Seems he knows Dems will win the White House...otherwise who else are the Republicans gonna blame for the complete failure in Iraq? It took them 5 years to create this mess and he thinks it will take less than a year to clean it up?? Gotta say it's a perfect strategy!!

ALL of his PREDICTIONS so far have been WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

The only thing we can say is that he is consistent.

n a 40-minute interview with Politico, he scoffed at the idea of two men who spent years accruing power showing so much deference to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in the big spending and energy debates of the year.

Murtha "and the other senior leaders ¦ march to the tune of Nancy Pelosi to an extent I had not seen, frankly, with any previous speaker," Cheney said. "

But his implication was clear: When asked if these men had lost their spines, he responded, "They are not carrying the big sticks I would have expected."

If Iraq is going to be self governing, guess we'll need a no bid contract for BIG STICKS too

Since purple thumbs are all it takes to declare a democracy in Iraq he may be right. The question is who gets the purple ink contract?

$2.5 trillion later...quite the bargain, eh? They will self govern under a religious theocracy which will end up as a future enemy of the US. Gee...2009 prediction is just after they leave office. A coincidence?
Can't wait for the karma to kick in on this SOB. The site of him makes my blood pressure blow through the roof.

Cheney : " It's very important, I think, and the President clearly does, that we proceed down the road of trying to persuade Iran diplomatically to give up their efforts to enrich uranium. "

However we've refused to sit down with them for the last 4 years demanding they give up their Nuclear enrichment program first.( & which they didn't have!)

Who's the insane one here - Ahmanijad or Cheney?

Since Cheney predicts it will be a democracy by 2009, let us all pray that he and his entire family along with the Bushes and Powells, Rice, Rumsfelds, Wolfowitzs, Tenets, Petraeus, etc. relocate to this "democracy".

With so many political, ethnic and religious groups still fighting, Iraq will never be unified or self-governing. We can send more troops to stifle some of the violence, bribe and buy "puppets" to do our bidding (give us their oil), but when we stop paying and sending our youth to die, and cease slaughtering civilians there, Iraq will experience more ethnic cleansing, murder and forced evacuations, rape and torture, killing fields, in short...a full-scale blood bath.
That Iraqi refugees are returning is not attributable to the reduction in violence, but that their visas in neighboring countries have expired. They have no where else to go. They come home to find their houses inhabited by squatters, unable to find employment, schools and hospitals closed, hunger, dire poverty, no utilities, lack of sanitation and more hardships.
We certainly gave Iraq much to be thankful for. They'll have their flowers waiting to throw us a parade. The insurgency was never in its last throws.
The insurgents moved away from the foreign troop concentrations, and are still strong as ever. When and if we ever draw down our troop levels, the violence will resume and certainly escalate.
What I truly hope for is that America will once again be a democracy and free republic. I pray our phones, web searches, emails, postal mail won't be intercepted...our medical and financial records will remain private...our media will no longer be suppressed and be able once again to focus on facts, evidence and journalistic integrity and thorough investigation...our reading habits from libraries and book stores won't be scrutinized...that civil servants (paramedics and firefighters) won't be trained to spy on civilians...that we can rely upon Habeas Corpus when, not if we're charged as "enemy combatants" for flimsy reasons...that we won't be indefinately detained at Gitmo or elsewhere...we won't be subjected to torture, rape or one day seeing Blackwater mercenaries roaming our streets, shooting to kill anyone...that this administration won't declare Martial Law, suspend elections, and create a permanent dictatorship.

Dick Cheney should be called upon to resign.
How many times does he get to be WRONG?
How many times does he get to LIE?

Resign or be impeached.

Mr. Bin Laden, would you care to comment on the long term effect the surge had on your insurgency, has it prevented you from carrying out kamakazi bombings, and who do you plan to vote for in the 2009 elections?

"Dick Cheney Predicts Iraq Will Be A Self-Governing Democracy By 2009"

If we leave now, will it take a couple of more years? Or if we leave now, will Iraq be a "Self-Governing Democracy" even sooner? If we had left roughly three-and-a-half years ago, would Iraq have become three seperate self-governing democracies by now?

Should we file this with all of Dick "Notstrodamus" Cheney's other predictions? Are we now in the last throes of the lastest throes? Do I ask too many questions?

I can't wait to hear what Cheney says next.
