It only took a few minutes Friday night at BB King's in New York to confirm the worst about funk and R&B legend Sly Stone. That's because Stone only made it through five of what could be loosely construed as numbers before announcing he needed a bathroom break.

As recent observers have noted of Stone's failed comeback, needing to pee is code for drugs. And when that happens, the show is over. As he did when I saw him on Nov. 20 at BB Kings, Stone left the stage and did not return for some time. When he did, he was clearly in a changed mental state and, yes, sleepy.

Nevertheless, his band -- led by niece Lisa -- sort of woke him up by launching into one of his old hits "If You Want Me to Stay." Stone, stoned, wearing a white hooded track suit and sunglasses, actually belted out most of the number. He started another song, ironically, "I Want to Take You Higher," and then wandered off stage. That was it.

He and LAURYN HILL should go on tour!

That would be HOT!

Paris Hilton could "open", literally.
Just by squatting on stage.

Watching sixty-something musicians should be outlawed, it is too depressing. Whether it is Sly, Paul, Mick or any of the others. Far better to relish our sweet memories of youth.

Who wants to see these old guys in their Depends, trying to jump around looking hot?

He's always been on drugs. The only difference now is that he looks like one of those creatures from the Dark Crystal. How frightful. Blond mohawk, pot belly, collar up too high, and sly too high.

The nimrods who reported this stupidity forget the grammy's in 2006 where he did the exact same thing and PRETENDED to play.

I wiah the 70's were back, Sly used to rock it out. And do the exact same thing.

Libsrule is dead-on. Sly and the Family Stone were a higher-caliber act. The man was brilliant! Many people thought "taking you higher" was really about raising your consciousness, but now we know better. Amy Winehouse's got nothing on Sly.

I was there on Friday night, the man is toast. It's quite sad, not much genius left in him I'm afraid. It was good to see Cynthia and Jerry though. They were looking good, the rest of the band were good and we were all standing on the verge of getting it on, and at $100.00 a ticket we left funkless. I've learned my lesson.

F***ing depressing, considering how talented Sly Stone is. His Woodstock performance was one of the best ones. But this garbage of not showing up to gigs, or showing up late, or showing up stoned/drugged up is standard operating procedure for him, and it's a damn shame.

Rockers do not age well....

I saw Sly last summer in Gent, Belgium. Same thing happened, he showed late and only actually sang and played about 5 and 1/2 numbers. Who knows (or cares) if he's doing drugs when he's offstage. I think the more likely explanation is that he's 64 years old. He has not, to say the least, been the most health conscious of people. Maybe he's just tired? I'm old enough to have seen a lot of the legends of jazz and blues in the December of their lives....believe me, everybody gets old and some of these guys who led the wild life in their youth get old before their time. Not everbody has the constitution of a Keith Richard!

But for the few minutes when Sly was on stage in Gent, I was priveleged to hear a genius at work, improvising on some of the most memorable R&B tunes of all time. The band was rock solid and Sly's niece (singing backup) WILL be a major star in her own right....mark my words.

I got more than my money's worth. 'Nuff said!

I guess some would be happier if he shared the stage with Donnie and Marie.

It's just a damned shame. One of the most talented individuals ever to walk the face of the earth. Some times emotional disorders and talent go hand-in-hand, then came come substance abuse.

What a shame...What a waste...I saw Sly perform in 1969 when he was at the top of his game. One of the most electrifying performances I have ever seen...

When are the agents going to learn not to give the entertainment access to the deposit money.

Never pay a musician BEFORE the show.

Geez. Some people never learn.
