Just when you thought there were no more wrinkles in the Clinton and Obama campaign's tit-for-tat on the issue of youthful indiscretions...

On Monday, Hillary Clinton contradicted her top strategist by stating that her campaign had asked Bill Shaheen, the New Hampshire co-chair, to resign after his controversial remarks Barack Obama's past drug use.

"We asked him to step down," Clinton said during a media blitz that saw her go on six morning news shows. "Every time somebody in my campaign says something that we don't believe is right, appropriate, we take care of it... We move quickly. And we will keep doing it."

Watch the video from MSNBC's "Morning Joe" below.

Sounds sensible. Except that last week, Clinton's chief strategist Mark Penn told Hardball's Chris Matthews just the opposite, that the campaign was not involved in the resignation.

MATTHEWS: Did you tell him to step down?

PENN: The senator made that clear. No, he stepped down. And he made clear...

MATTHEWS: Do you tell him to step down? It took 24 hours for him to do it. Do you think he did it in time...

PENN: No. No.

Shaheen's statement also implied that it was his decision to leave the campaign.

"I made a mistake and in light of what happened," he said in a statement, "I have made the personal decision that I will step down as the Co-Chair of the Hillary for President campaign."

Either way, Shaheen is gone. And so, hopefully, is this cycle of stories.

I still like Richardson... He has great foreign policy experience, is not anti-gun owner, did a good job in New Mexico as governor, is socially liberal yet fiscally conservative, and is probably electable. Hillary has too much baggage and changes her position too much. Heck, she was almost a bushie if you go by her voting record in the Senate! As to those who say the Huffington Post is anti-Hillary... where were you about 6 months ago? Then it was all Hillary all the time! This is why we have primaries in the election process. Maybe she just doesnt hold up well to real scrutiny. Obama hasn't really said anything that would get me excited to vote for him, and has taken some stances I'm not pleased with. Edwards is the standard "Democrat" with decent social conciousness but is anti-gun owner and that makes him unelectable in most of the country too. I am still looking, but Richardson is the only candidate so far that wont force me to chooose between what parts of the Constitution I will want to abondon to vote for him. On the Republican side, only Ron Paul is saying things I like, but I could not vote for a Republican anyway. Now... if he was an independant, then maybe! The thing is, someone who wins will have to govern and fix all the things that the Bushie's did and that will take the entire Congress and some crossover votes in the Senate and House. We need a leader who can entice those votes and get rid of Nafta, the Patriot Act, and several other problems which I am sure you can all think of if you try. Until we can return to a Constitutional Democratic Republic instead of a pseudo Monarchy we will not be a free people.

"Clinton and Obama campaign's tit-for-tat on the issue of youthful indiscretions."

What is this tit-for-tat? It's been awfully one-sided with Clinton's campaign taking shot after cheap shot at Obama while he simply displays his innate dignity and grace. If there ever is a quick, short response from him, it's witty and humorous but pointed and he keeps himself above the fray. Please, don't imply that Obama lowers himself to Clinton's desperate level.

You gotta love it. On the Daily show tonight the guest is Bill Clinton. Jon Steward ask him what he will do if Hillary gets elected. Bills reply.. I'd slit my throat!
Then he went on to joke and say other things, but you have to wonder how much of a Freudian slip the throat slitting joke was...

This entire thing was planned by the Clinton campaign (as well as comments concerning Obama's kindergarten ambitions, their lies about him being a Muslim even though Obama is as close to being a "Born Again Christian" as you can get without actually being one, their "fired" staff members that tried to make an issue out of Obama's junior high school pot smoking, and now Shaheen; who is a "sacrificial lamb" to allow Hillary to sling mud at Obama by using someone else's hand.

She's as dirty as Richard Nixon was on his worst day.

TO HELL WITH BUSH! If we elect her, it'll be as if Nixon never left Washington. They both love war. They both lie through their teeth. And they both know how to scheme all kinds of BS for pure personal ambition!

Good Christ!

You know...I am getting pissed at this site, which I have read everyday since it's inception, treating Hillary Clinton like she is a pariah.
She is a Democrat and the first woman to have a chance at being president of the United States.

Again, she is a Democrat. You think is the worst or that the country will be worse off is she is elected, then dammit ...vote for Huckabee and shut up.

Does anybody else notice the slant in the Huffington post against anything that Hillary does?

As much as I admire Arianna Huffington, this paper is terribly slanted towards an inexperienced first term senator who shouldn't be running now for president.

No one has ever lied as much as Good Old George Bush.

George Bush makes Hillary look like a saint!

David Geffen had it right, the Clintons lie with such ease, that it's really astonishing. When is enough, enough. Why don't they just go back to Arkansas? Maybe New York fell for it, but I sure hope this country doesn't fall for it again. Wake up Iowa and don't caucus for Hillary.

You just can't trust a word Hillary (or for that matter her husband) says. She just doesn't stop. If she had shut her mouth and didn't say anything, this would have gone away fast but she can't help drinking the Kool Aid.

Its called professional courtesy, but you guys would know nothing of that. I'm sure lots of people asked or suggested to Bill Shaheen he should step down but the decision was Bill Shaheen's. I'm sure Chris Matthews will make a big deal out of it, he is so petty.

Obama should be happy that Bill Shaheen apologized and stepped down, but no, just an excuss for another petty attack on Hillary's character and honesty.

Now, she lied again, again and again. People I just do not understand if she really know the difference in tell the truth and telling a lie. We do not need this in the WHITE HOUSE. THIS REMINDS ME OF THAT FINGER WAVING AT THE CAMERA IN THE 1990'S. I DID NOT HAVE SEX WITH THAT WOMEN.

Boy, democrats can't help shooting themselves in the foot can we. "JUST WIN BABY"!!!! and Obama can't win. Love or hate Hillary, she is the only hope we have at this point. I don't for one minute trust the polls. Obama doesn't look good against any of the top repukes given the problems this country faces today. To go to the podium day in and day out and say "I want to change political climate in washington" without giving us a vision of how is plans to do isn't going to win the white house for us Democrats. If Obama wants to win he had better start giving us more substance than he's been giving us.
