John Travolta has been dropped from the "Dallas" movie after being promoted as the project's anchor for more than two years.

Insiders tell Page Six that Travolta, who was just nominated for a Golden Globe for donning a fat suit for his drag role in "Hairspray," was "let go about two weeks ago. He had the role of J.R. Ewing taken from him and given to Ben Stiller."

However, a rep for Stiller denies the comic actor accepted or was offered the part.

Ben Stiller would ruin the film . . . especially if he plays JR . . . ugh

Isn't Ben Stiller like, 3'4"?

I didn't know J.R. was a midget!

Travolta's career is finished. It ended long ago.

Tragic, isn't it? A career comes to an end and nobody has the courage to tell the person they're so yesterday.

Doing a movie of "Dallas" 15 years after it disappeared from TV is a waste of time. The TV show was a ridiculous prime time soap opera that could only be watched for laughs. It was funny as hell. Nobody, not even John Travolta could be a sinister as Larry Hagman's portrayal. Nothing on TV was as silly as the dream year. Who Shot JR could have only happened in 1980. The whole show was a time capsule of the most moronic styles and society of the '80's. It was a cartoon. The idea of Ben Stiller playing JR is beyond credulity, it's just plain stupid.

Travolta is too one-dimensional to even play a one-dimensional character like J.R. (I liked Travolta in Pulp Fiction)

Of course J.R. had about as much depth as a piece of shit on a stick, but he also is an interesting character. Who to play him?

The part should go to Mitt Romney.

Really too bad... The idea of DALLAS as a comedy is horrific, blasphemous! Ben Stiller is NO J.R. Ewing!!! I disagree that the time for this movie has passed. Done well, with a great dramatic cast, this could be a fantastic movie. As a die-hard soap fan, and as a big fan of this show, I am totally bummed! :-(

Worse than Dr. Dolittle with Rex Harrison and Tony Newley.

Harrison demanded Potier and not Sammy Davis to play Kennybooboo. so they paid off Davis and hired Potier, then Harrison quit anyway and they hired Christopher Plumber, then hired Harrison back.

The built special effect costing hundreds of millions.

The movie bombed.

When they cater to actors it is just flop sweat. Actors can smell a bomb.

Have any of you ever heard of Russell Crowe?
The man was born to play J.R. Ewing.
But how, in the name of all that's holy, can JLo be Sue Ellen? So who is Pam? Oprah?

I fail to see what Hollywood producers see in Ben Stiller. Loved his parents' work. Can't figure out what the attraction is with him. Maybe the previous poster is right: they are going for camp?
Same goes for Adam Sandler, minus the parental reference.

Were/are they going for 'camp' all the way? I agree that Travolta lends more gravitas to the project.
One idea'd be to go all Scientologist with the cast. I could see Tom Cruise doing a passable Bobby Ewing.
