What Ron Paul Will Do With His Cash Haul

Congressman Ron Paul's presidential campaign has been defined by exceeded expectations. During debates, the Texas Republican has separated himself from the GOP pack with unrelenting criticism of the Iraq War. On the Internet, his supporters have flooded discussion forums with such ferocity that several websites have barred their participation. And in the world of political fundraising no one, not even Sens. Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama have had single day successes that approach Paul's cash hauls.

The latest of these occurred yesterday, when the Paul campaign took in a record $6 million in a 24-hour period. The total, which came a month and a half after supporters - independent of the candidate - brought in $4.2 million dollars on a single day, eclipsed the record $5.7 million that Sen. John Kerry raised after he received the 2004 Democratic nomination.

The money is indeed impressive and has made Paul the envy of some in the GOP field.

"We have friendly relationships with a couple of the other campaigns," Jesse Benton, Paul's spokesperson told the Huffington Post. "I joke with the [Mike] Huckabee campaign. We wish we had their poll numbers and they wish they had our cash."

But, as Benton acknowledges, with surveys showing Paul well behind in Iowa and trailing in New Hampshire, the question remains, what can the campaign do with their stuffed coffers to generate growth in the polls.

Apparently, a lot. Already preparations are being made to build infrastructure in the February 5th primary states, signifying that Paul plans to stay in the race no matter how the early elections go.

"Our immediate focus is Iowa and New Hampshire," said Benton. "But what is great about having this money now is that it allows us to step back, hire staff and get some paid media for the February 5th primary. We still need to do well in New Hampshire and Iowa to prove that we can continue to grow and maintain momentum."

Paul's team will also be promoting what it calls the "Christmas Vacation" program, which involves paying the room and board expenses of college students who want to help out in the first two states during the winter break.

But it's not just college kids who are coming on board. Within the next few days, the Paul campaign says they will hit 200 employees nationally with roughly half of them based in Iowa.

"We are hiring people so fast it's hard to keep track," said Benton

In addition, Paul will be devoting more money to advertisements, with a fifth campaign commercial set to be released soon in both New Hampshire and Iowa. And yet, for someone who has profited so bountifully of the web, little in terms of Internet innovations is being planned.

"We will go as far as the web wants us to go," said Benton. "We don't do anything magical on the web. It's just that the message is so powerful that it goes viral and spreads."

Real change for the Paul campaign, however, may not be something that the candidate or his staffers can possibly affect. As Benton notes, the perception of Paul as a fringe candidate (even after all the cash hauls) remains ingrained in the media psyche.

"We still have a ways to go," he said. "To get into the earned media cycle you have to earn it. More and more people are talking about Ron and mentioning him as a candidate. The talk about him being nice and having loyal fans but no chance of winning is finally fading out... These fundraising events have given us a megaphone to say there is a lot of support for us out there."

And indeed, other Republican candidates are starting to take notice. Even if Paul doesn't win the nomination, his fundraising efforts have made him a remarkable political weapon. As an aide to a rival campaign said, when asked what he would like to see the Texan do with all his money: "I'd like to see him spend it on Huffington Post web ads."

I think Ron Paul is striking a chord with tens of thousands of Americans like myself who believe he is the only one who is being honest about ending the military debacles overseas. We're not worried about his social beliefs because we have faith in the inevitable Democratic majority in Congress and the D.C. gridlock that may ensue. People like me have lost faith in the Democrats ability to really effect change. They're better than Republicans by far, but they've been so disappointing in their policy of capitulation to this Administration and the Republican minority.

What so many people want right now is a candidate that will stick it in the eye of the current status quo. The only candidate that impresses with the intention to do that is Ron Paul.

Truthfully if Obama doesn't win and Hillary does, then I think Ron Paul would have the most appeal for crossover votes...no one like myself is going to vote for a warmonger and of all the candidates on the Republican side he is the only one I would consider to cast a vote for. On the other hand if Obama wins the nomination which I think he will do handedly then this contest is over. He will be our next President!

Like the Czars of Russia and Kings of France, the Government & Corporate Media live in a bubble of wealth & are oblivious to how enraged & desperate people really are. People realize they can't feed the kids, they are losing their homes, jobs are going to India, you can't buy anything not made in China, citizens are being wiretapped, trillions are being given to foreign countries and the American Citizen is going broke. The responce of the Government & the Corporate Dictatorship
is to ignore them, write more intolerable laws, and push them harder.
They are being betrayed by the very people chosen to protect them.
The truly astute realize the NeoCon efforts are really an attempted coup.
The Democratic Party response after the last election was an insult to intelligence. The Democrats pass non-binding resolutions, the War goes on.
The NeoCons even disgust the Republicans. People are sick & tired of all of them.
The response to Ron Paul is an expression of that rage. Ron Paul is somewhat over-zealous with Ayn Rand individualism, but at least he seems to defend the Constitution more than Corporate profit. He's the only candidate to address the real heart of the matter, the Federal Reserve and the Central Banking System, a system vehemently opposed by Thomas Jefferson. Kucinich is much more articulate on Health Care.
Paul's over-zealous individualism will make it worse.
But people are being given few choices.
They want Peace, they want a job, and they want a Government that cares more about Americans than Chinese Bankers. I think that's the appeal of Ron Paul.

Nowhere in the Constitution it says that Ron Paul should run. Therefore, he should not run.

Follow the Constitution.

As an aside, Ron Paul owns the last surviving copy of the Constitution. If that gets lost or stolen, that's the end of the Inited States. We'll have to start all over again.

Philadelphia, get ready for the next round.

We have already elected one stupid ass hole to the White House twice and look where that has gotten the country. So why not give Ron Paul a chance he couldn't be any worst that the fool in the white house now. And besides he would give this country a breath of fresh air.A Dem for RON PAUL

Unlike the Democrats like CLinton, Obama and Edwards, Ron Paul will end the Iraq War immediately. NO BS 'timetable' or 'phased withdrawlal.

He'll also shut down the useless DEA and those American Empire outposts in the UK, Europe, Japan and Africa.

Ron Paul is the real anti-DC candidate, unlike the Democrats who will continue the IRaq War.

It really wont matter what Paul does with the money, because there not much chance he would win the election. I will agree he does have many good talking points and ideas, but he also has many ideas that are horrible too. But, sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. Which in American politics, its always more bad than good.

But just for fun, lets say he does win and becomes president. Do you really think a congress full of democrats and republicans are going to let him do anything? It will probably be the best 4 years for America as there will be nothing done in DC. So in that case, I say, run Paul run!

Ron Paul.."I SUCK!"
http://2politicaljunkies.blogspot.com/2007/08/ron-paul-sucks.html

But I just want to remind anyone who cares about women's reproduction freedom that he is anti choice.

And, if you've read this blog at all you'd know that I can't stand anti choice Libertarians even more than I can't stand anti choice Republicans. Maybe it's because I expect more from "freedom-loving, keep-the-government-off-of-me" Libertarians. But, too often I find that the same Libertarian males who kick and scream and cry and rend their garments over the thought of the government taking one thin dime of their money have no problem whatsoever with the thought of that very same government crawling up into a woman's womb.

Go figure.

Oh yeah, he's also not just anti universal healthcare, he's anti Medicare.

I say: Fuck him.

The more vocal Ron Paul supporters are making me crazy. They are driving people away from hearing out Paul.

Ron Paul's greatest value is the new perspective he brings to the national polylogue.

While we are dealing with one issue at a time, we are missing his overriding point. The one he wishes to solve...

The Federal Government has powers which does not belong to it, much of that power is abused, and they are going to do nothing about it.

He wants the Federal Government out of our affairs. Example:

He wants to kill the Dept of Education.
Facts:
1) The Dept of Education is twice the size it was 6 years ago. Their budget has gone up each year, but they have de facto cut federal funding to public education.
2) They cough up national standards like No Child Left Unabandoned. To date the program has been financially cut, and pissed off every educator in the US. Zero out of 50 states have met its standards. Zero.

Paul's point is that nobody in Washington should have a say in the operation of a community's schools, except for the community. Tax dollars that go to Washington for "education" should be left in the hands of the community to meet their educational goals.

Now for reality.

Do you really think that Paul could get through 100% of that? No way. But he could begin the move of Washington out of the education business. People would get a better return on investment. They could put more money directly into their school system, thereby increasing the value of their community.

Regarding all of his suggestions which seem extreme, I have heard him say "you just can't hit a switch". The implication is that he is very much aware of the transition involved. He is not a Neo-Con who would just "throw the switch" and say "f*** you and die" to communities and individuals in need of some help getting off of the federal monies.

Let's tone this down until Paul can get a clear picture into the national discussion.

here's a little sugar plum for Galveston from a big ol' RADICAL FAERIE

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd176/hoodoospace/RealPaul.jpg

Let's look at how various conservative and Christian Right groups have rated Ron Paul:

Family Research Council, 2005: 75%
John Birch Society, Summer '06, Spring '05, Fall '04, Summer '03: 100%
John Birch Society, Spring 2004: 88%
Concerned Women for America, 2005-2006: 62%
Eagle Forum, 2005: 71%
American Conservative Union, 2005: 76%
Christian Coalition, 2004: 76%
National Right to Life Committee, 2005-2006: 56% Then there are these ratings:

Secular Coalition for America, 2006: 20%
Planned Parenthood, 2006: 20%
American Civil Liberties Union, 2005-2006: 55%
NAACP, 2005: 52%
Human Rights Campaign, 2003-2004: 25% The ratings here for the ACLU and NAACP aren't too bad, but over all this does not paint a pretty picture. No one who can get 100% from the John Birch Society and 75% from the Family Research Council, but only 20% from the Secular Coalition for America, is a much of a friend of personal liberty

I would like to know when it became the in thing to do for liberals to mock a grass roots effort such as this?
Do you think this is all republicans?
Dont you notice, half your base has disappeared?
Are you this blind that you cant see your brothers and sisters giving millions of dollars to someone they deem to be honest and trustworthy to hold their voices?

I often wonder if it is not jealousy and they cut off their nose to spite their face.
You will all wake up very soon, if you havent already..
You will see the emergence of the BIGGEST political movement this country has ever seen.
All the ingredients are there.
So YOU(HUMESTUPID) can sit back and watch our candidate take control.
You will see him play these corrupt democrats against each other for not going against the war.
He will play the media by only giving his money to small business and only doing their non paid interviews..
All this while they beg for his interview and he says no.
I will be laughing at you all.
I already am..
I know what has happened in this country..
Something is afoot that makes big government very uneasy!
The momentum is gaining strength.
You will wake up too.
:)

So, who are these "kooks" who are sending Ron Paul so much money? And just why are they sending him so much money? I will tell you who they are, because I am one of them. They are rank-and-file, tax-paying citizens who are sick and tired of out-of-control federal spending and deficits. They have had it with an arrogant federal government that runs roughshod over both the Constitution and the liberties of the American people. They are people who have had enough of the IRS, the BATFE, and a thousand other federal agencies that have "erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance." (Declaration of Independence)

They are people who see through the phony, disingenuous federal politicians who only want to fleece the American citizenry for the purpose of building their own personal fortunes. They have had it with the Military-Industrial complex that desires to build international empires at the expense of the blood and sacrifice of the American people. They have had it with David Rockefeller and his Council on Foreign Relations. They have had it with the arrogance of George W. Bush and Nancy Pelosi.
.

They have had it with this phony "war on terrorism" that sends trillions of dollars to nations throughout the Middle East, but refuses to close our own borders to illegal immigration. They have had it with the "war on drugs" and the "war on terror" being used as excuses to trample people's freedoms. They have it with Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderon. They have had it with Bush's North American Union. They have had it with Joel Osteen and Rick Warren. In short, they have just had it!
