Gordon Smith Defends Lott's Segregationist Comments

Speaking on the Senate floor Tuesday morning, Sen. Gordon Smith, R-OR, offered a passionate defense of the pro-segregationist comments made by his colleague and friend, Sen. Trent Lott, more then three years ago.

"I was half way around the world when an event befell Trent Lott that shook me deeply," Smith said, referencing Lott's 2002 remarks in praise of Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond's 1948 run for the White House. "I was celebrating my re-election and on vacation. I watched over international news as his words were misconstrued, words which we had heard him utter many times in his big warm-heartedness trying to make one of our colleagues, Strom Thurmond, feel good at 100 years old. We knew what he meant. But the wolfpack of the press circled around him, sensed blood in the water, and the exigencies of politics caused a great injustice..."

Smith's comments were made in a session noting Lott's impending retirement from the Senate.

Watch the video here:

In 2002, Lott lost his Senate Republican Leader post after he was quoted praising the staunch segregationist Strom Thurmond during Thurmond's 100th birthday party. "I want to say this about my state: when Strom Thurmond ran for President, we voted for him," Lott boasted. "We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either."

Lott apologized repeatedly for his remarks, calling them "insensitive," "repugnant" and "inexcusable" during an appearance on a black-oriented cable channel.

And at the time, Smith himself seemed to think an apology was in order. As the Oregonian declared in December 2002, "However they were intended, Senator Lott's words were offensive and I was deeply dismayed to hear of them. His statement goes against everything I and the people of Oregon believe in. I look forward to working with my Republican colleagues to arrive at a decision that is best for the U.S. Senate and the country."

Today, however, Smith seemed to insisted that Lott should never have stepped down from his leadership position. "It was a wrong," Smith said of Lott's 2002 resignation, "but it was a wrong that was righted."

Lott recently found himself back among the leadership ranks. His election as minority whip in November 2006 came by a 25 to 24 vote. Sen. Smith played a key role in the internal party election. According to the New Republic:

"Smith rose to give a nominating speech for Lott. Smith's address was deeply emotional: He described Lott's honorable character and talked about the possibility of redemption. He even quoted from Mark Antony's funeral oration in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. The room fell silent; Lott wept. When the doors opened, Lott had been elected minority whip by a single vote."

Republicans represent those interested in continuing to give life to the concept of "race" and of oppressing those of the minority "race." Old News. Southerners and Republicans are a millstone around this country's neck making it impossible to step into the 20th century, much less the one we are presently in. Their declining(Republicans and Southern "whites") birth rate is our only hope.

Why would anyone be surprised that Gordon Smith defends racist comments. He's a Mormon.

Smith is a hypocrite. I hope the good people of Oregon show him the door the next time he runs.

This is traditional Gordo Smith. Those of us stuck in his state know this all too well...he can't stand up for ANYTHING. It isn't like he's introspective, it's that he's slimy as slimy can possibly get, and he'll say anything to stay in office. We all keep trying to get him out, but he keeps finding ways to slime his way back in.

If anyone wants to really send a message to Smith, you can do it by supporting his Democratic opponent Steve Novick at his website, novickforsenate.com, or Jeff Merkley at jeffmerkley.com. Smith only votes with the Democrats only when he can grandstand safely on being "bipartisan" and know that his vote will ultimately be meaningless. On the other hand, Novick or Merkley would vote on principle when it actually mattered...and not jump back into the GOP's pocket whenever things looked too promising for the Democrats.

I wonder how many posters have noted that
Lott has succumbed to the republican temptation
of THOSE HARD ABS in the younger homosexual
male. Trent Lott without her wig and with
tongue hanging out looks so different. Think
of Lott with no hair cruising for boys but
settling for men.

"...trying to make one of our colleagues, Strom Thurmond, feel good at 100 years old..."

Thurmond was a racist scum. He didn't deserve to feel good. The only thing regrettable about his death was that it wasn't longer and more painful.

So what's new? The GOP is the party of hatred, racism, homophobia and bigotry.

Smith has been getting away with this ugly brand of two-faced politics for too many years and it is time for him to go.

Steve Novick is the progressive netroots/grassroots candidate for the Democratic nomination to oppose Smith. Steve has already posted a press release about this at his website. Look for the Oregonian's interview of Steve and his response to Gordon Smith in the Oregonian tomorrow. In addition, Steve will appear on the Lars Larson radio program at 12:15pm tomorrow. His fast action on this issue shows how he will work for Oregonians in the U.S. Senate. Steve is Gordon Smith's worst nightmare, and will be the one to take his seat in 2008.

Defence against racist comments is like defence against nuclear weapons!

Neither work!

I'm a white guy and I'm married to a black woman. I can tell you one thing. Lott and Gordon Smith hate black people and they are quite proud of it. What Smith is trying to tell all the white voters is this: Even though Trent had to eat shit for a minute there he just did it to keep his job. He really still hates black people a whole lot and so do I. So vote for us.
