For those feeling nervous behind the wheel as old age kicks in, savvy cars may be the answer.

Prof. Ryuta Kawashima, who helped develop Nintendo's "Brain Age" games, is teaming with Toyota to develop cars that help seniors drive safely, the researcher said Tuesday.

"We envision future cars will be able to monitor brain and emotional activity to back up elderly drivers," said Kawashima, a Tohoku University scientist who worked on Nintendo Co.'s best-selling "Brain Age" games -- and whose smiling image is the guide in the series.

These comments are a perfect example of America's attitude toward the elderly.
Do those of you who think old drivers should be taken off the road ever volunteer to drive one to the grocery store? the Doctor? the pharmacy? to see their spouse in the hospital?
Well, do ya punks?
No?
Well then shut the fuck up.
Hubris?
What you call hubris might just be necessity.
You wanna see hubris? look at some of the so called humor in these comments by people who do not believe they are ever going to be old.
Hubris?
Hubris is a society that thinks its OK to treat the elderly like an inconvenience once they are no longer productive in that societies eyes. Hubris is also believing the lies or myths of that society, that everyone has what they need in the greatest country in the world. Even greater hubris is complaining about the "problem" (those damn old people) and doing nothing to help alleviate the reasons for the "problem." People need care and help as they age. That is a fact of life. Everyone's life. Every being's life. Ever have a pet that got old, really old? Our culture does not support that fact. We no longer live in a society where the family stays in the same 5 square miles so family support has become less and less for more and more people. The older you get the less friends you have as well... they are dying off. Do you think the majority of these "dangerous" drivers want to even be on the road?

I'm sure that many of them would prefer to have a ride and some companionship and conversation. But this is an independent nation, remember? Pull yourself up by the bootstraps, don't depend on any one.
We still haven't learned that interdependence is what makes a society humane and a culture bearable to live in... instead we tear down anything that is inconvenient ;the leader of another country, or the old people that just get in the way.
Pathetic.

So does this mean more Toyotas get the automatic transmission selector on the steering column vs. the center console? (per the pic)

They already have them, it's the Avalon and Camry. Just put some strobe lights and a siren on the roof so people can get out of the way.

Story in the Chicago Tribune today about astronaut's Daniel Tani's 90 yr. old mother being killed by a train.

She was stopped behind a school bus who was stopped at the lowered gates of a train crossing. She was beeping her horn for the bus to move and it didn't because the train was coming.
So she just sped around the bus and crossed the tracks and the train hit her car and killed her.

Someone in that family should have seen to it that her license was taken away a LONG time ago.

The hubris of these old drivers angers me to no end. How clueless do you have to be to be honking your horn at a school bus that is stopped at a railroad crossing?

Yes, this is tragic. Even more so because her astronaut son is up in space at this time, but this is one of those tragedies that could have been prevented. Imagine the trauma this caused to the kids on the bus who saw this!

Great, just what we need...more old people on the road.

Article in the Chicago Trib last week about an 82 yr. old man who was backing out of his driveway and ran over and killed his wife.

My grandmother was with a man who should have had his license revoked long ago, but he worked in the police dept. in some capacity and was allowed to keep getting his license renewed. They were in an accindent and she was killed. She never drove a day in her life, but she's with some incompetent old fool and she dies.

Another story last year about the old woman who was dragging a puppy from her rear bumper unbeknownst to her. People along the way were trying to get her attention but she was clueless. A guy in a semi truck had to make a U-turn at an intersection to get her to stop.

These old drivers are a danger. It might seem like they're good drivers because they always get home safe, but they have NO clue as to the havoc they leave in their wake.

The South Park episode about old drivers is hysterical...and right on!

So will it automatically shut off the turn signal after 5 minutes or so?

Is this a joke?

ALL Toyotas are designed for the elderly. They haven't got a single exciting vehicle in their lineup. If Florida is "God's waiting room" then Toyota is the preferred car. They've got the elderlies' favorite the Camry. Then you have the car for the richer elderly, the Avalon. You've got the poor elderly car, the Corolla. Then you've got the only vehicle not for the elderly, the pathetic Yaris and the crossovers for the elderly, the Rav4 and Matrix.

No Celica, no MRS, no Supra, no tuner special. At least Honda has the S2000, Civic SI and the Element. Toyota is as boring and bland and as old as it gets. That's why they have Scions. But why can't they blend the two markets, give people something aspirational?

No wonder they sell so well in the US. Quality is one thing, but there is no reason on earth, in this day and age, not to have an interesting vehicle.

The flashing green strobe lights on top will warn nearby motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

The "I like Ike" bumper sticker will inform drivers behind that the maximum this vehicle is capable of is 17mph UNDER the limit.

A button on the NAV system will give turn-by turn directions towards home, no matter what the starting point. Another will steer drivers to the nearest restroom for overactive bladder and enlarged prostate.

A vibro-heat-massage chair will ease aches and pains.

The digits on the dash will be supersized.

The cup-holders will be sized to accept all sizes of ENSURE.

Washable seat covers for the incontinent.
