The federal agency in charge of policing the torrent of political spending during the upcoming presidential primaries will, for all practical purposes, shut its doors on New Year's Eve.

The Federal Election Commission will effectively go dark on Jan. 1 because Congress remains locked in a standoff over the confirmation of President Bush's nominees to the panel. As a consequence, the FEC will enter 2008 with just two of six members -- short of the four votes needed for the commission to take any official action.

Not a problem... supervision's been turned over to the evangelical whackos, anyway.

The GOP is nominating a bishop, aren't they?

Good!!!
It's not like the FEC does anything to prevent fraud and illegal activities in elections.
At least thats one less agency Bush has to screw up with incompetent appointments.

OK so if the Dems sweep the Slates in 08, do you honestly think the Dems will finally play hardball and start arresting and jailing the criminal handmaidens of this administration?
The answer is an emphatic NO.....I can already hear the calls for unity and healing....when we really need the blood of tyrants.

Like this matters? Automated voting machines can determine the outcome before a single vote has been cast. I wonder if we'll even notice the absence of the FEC?

That's ok, no doubt as the year progresses,
people will be donating campaign monies to
those candidates that can verifiably demonstrate
where they got their money....Big ________
is going to be heavily scrutinized for trying
to buy votes or sponsor Pandidates this year...
open books etc...

Well, while I don't think Bush nomination should receive confirmation, at least there'd be somebody to sue should elections turn out stolen.

Citizens can sue the FEC? Right?

Does the FEC need to be functioning for citizens to sue?

Why wouldn't one of the Senators join in a petition should we get a repeat of 200?
