Council Bluffs, Iowa - Presidential candidate Senator Joe Biden took the occasion of the assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto to chide his Democratic rivals as too inexperienced to be president and to tout his own foreign policy credentials.

"Observe what's been going on in Pakistan and you'll see not many candidates have spoken out," Biden said. "And those few who have spoken don't make a lot of sense."

Biden made his remarks Thursday night to an audience of about 150 supporters gathered at the Elks Lodge in this small city abutting Nebraska.

Biden didn't single out any of his rivals by name in deriding their statements on Pakistan. But calling "nuclear-riddled" Pakistan an "emerging, urgent crisis," the veteran Delaware senator suggested that among the Democratic contenders he alone was best suited to deal with dangerous global affairs.

In a post-event interview with The Huffington Post, Biden at first refused to specify which candidate he was referring to when he said they weren't making sense on Pakistan. He noted that front-runners Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, both of whom issued brief statements earlier in the day lamenting Bhutto's murder, were "both good people" but didn't have his breadth of foreign policy experience.

When further pressed on the issue, Biden singled out second-tier candidate Bill Richardson as an example of a candidate putting forth simplistic responses to the Pakistani crisis. "Richardson said that [Pakistani President] Musharraf should step down and make way for a coalition government," Biden said. "But what coalition? There isn't any. What's he talking about?"

The assassination of Bhutto, Biden told HuffPost, was one more symptom of what he called a "dyslexic" U.S. foreign policy. "We've got things backwards," he said. "Our policy in Afghanistan where we haven't devoted enough resources to fight Al Qaeda has only encouraged the same extremists in Pakistan."

Biden devoted most of his two-hour appearance to lengthy presentations of various "Biden plans" to solve thorny international issues.

"You know a lot of people make jokes about me running really running for Secretary of State," he told the crowd who peppered him with questions on foreign policy issues ranging from Russia to the Middle East to Afghanistan. "I'm not. I'm running for President. But I would ask you: 'How many of you are willing to vote for a candidate not able to be Secretary of State?'"

"I know many of the world leaders for the last 30 years. Not because I'm and important guy. But because I came up with them," he said referring to his long-time leadership position on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "It's not hyperbole to suggest the rest of the world is waiting for an American president to be elected who can connect the dots. And I can."

Keep An Eye on Biden
Posted by BLAKE DVORAK
Just in case Joe Biden comes back from the dead in Iowa -- but I suppose a candidate has to be alive, politically speaking, first -- let this post serve as my post-Caucus day defense to readers who wonder why no one saw it coming.

Well, a few, including of course Biden himself, see a faint glimmer of chance:

First, Reid Wilson sat down with Biden in Indianola, Iowa, for an interview. There's also this article from Time's Jay Newton-Small:

Biden has seen standing room-only crowds, like the one in Ames, across the state in recent weeks. And the Ames audience was twice moved to its feet in ovations for Biden's stump speech -- a surprisingly brisk 18 minutes compared to Obama's nearly hour-long closing argument, Hillary's 45-minute speeches and Edwards' typical 35-minute spiel. Biden by comparison spends more than an hour answering questions, a strategy, his communications director Larry Rusky says, that is starting to pay off.
There's also the boasting coming from the campaign in an email blasted out earlier today:

* 500+ people yesterday in Des Moines; a "first tier crowd"
* 300 Biden backers in Mason City

* 250 enthusiastic supporters in Dubuque; "a scene more typical of the events of democratic front-Runners"

* An "energetic crowd" in Waterloo ; leads to "an endorsement from a key Black Hawk County Democrat"

* 200-strong crowd in Council Bluffs

There, now I feel more comfortable facing readers on Friday morning. The silver lining of course for Biden is that he doesn't have to win. He doesn't even need to be close. A close fourth would be victory enough for a candidate who hasn't topped 10% on any poll in the past year.

What Biden says about Pakistan is exactly what Obama is saying -- except for the part about Pakistan being an 'emerging threat' (it passed that stage up a while back, but that's my interjection, not Barrack Obama's).

He's got a good point on foreign relations experience -- more than the rest of the entire (Rep. and Dem.) field put together.

Joe, you really are great Secretary of State material, even if you don't want to hear it...

We are constantly being told that Biden should be elected because he has credentials in foreign affairs.

Actually Biden is almost always wrong on foreign affairs. He never gets it right.

If you read the above article you will see that it doesn't say anything. That is because there is nothing to say about Biden. He is a big zero. He is also as corrupt as they come and a bald faced liar.

I support Biden as well but he made a serious strategic error. If he wanted to be president, he should have married Bill Clinton.

The last six years have seen incredible instability
created in the region including Iraq, Iran,
Afghanistan & Pakistan. The latest assassination
is only further proof of that. Is a fancy investigation
of that going to help matters at all?

Perhaps what is needed is a way to coax the hornets back into the nest?

They don't like US. They really, really don't like US.
(They don't exactly care for their US college-educated
people who are friendly towards US either.) I don't think
they'd care too much for our 'impartial' investigation either.

Now, if Demos *ever* selected a candidate based
on foreign-policy expertise, Biden would be The Man.
But Demos are much more concerned with
domestic issues, so Biden has no chance.

Joe Biden on CNN this morning said that if the Democrats nominate him there will be no need of a third party since he knows how to work across the aisle and unite the Country. I trust Joe Biden.

Here's a sad commentary on our ability to choose a president. Mike Hucklebee (who doesn't even believe in evolution for christ sake), is about to win iowa, while a man like joe biden is struggling just to finish fourth.

And even the NYT is starting to get it. Sometimes even David Brooks is right:

THREE IOWA COUNTY PARTY CHAIRS ENDORSE JOE BIDEN
Published: 12/29/2007

Des Moines, IA (December 29, 2007) " Sen. Joe Biden today received the endorsement of three County Democratic Party Chairs in Iowa, Pat Sass, Black Hawk County Party Chair; Jean Hall, Clayton County Chair; and Linda Carrillo, Cedar County Party Chair. All three will serve on the Biden for President Campaign statewide steering committee.

Last night Black Hawk County Party Chair Pat Sass announced her support at a caucus countdown event with Sen. Biden in Waterloo. She served in the Black Hawk Recorders office for 30 years including 16 as the elected Recorder.

"I'm supporting Joe Biden because he's the only candidate in this race who has an exit strategy to get us out of Iraq. But it's about more than the war. We need a president who isn't afraid to act and knows how to solve our biggest problems at home today as well. Joe knows the ticket to the middle class is a union job, and he's ready to fight for workers' rights."

This week, Mo-Joe "08 is sweeping across Iowa, with Sen. Biden picking up two newspaper endorsements in Jefferson and Sheldon, earning two new legislative endorsements, and packing venues across the Hawkeye State.

These county party leaders have joined an impressive group of local elected officials and state legislators who have endorsed Senator Biden in Iowa. To date, 16 state legislators"and a majority of the House Democratic leadership"have endorsed Senator Biden, including State Sen. Joe Seng (Davenport), House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (Des Moines), Speaker Pro Tempore Rep. Polly Butka (Clinton), Rep. John Whitaker (Hillsboro), Rep. Doris Kelley (Waterloo), Rep. Lisa Heddens (Ames), Rep. Jim Lykam (Davenport), Rep. Mike Reasoner (Creston), Rep. Dick Taylor (Cedar Rapids), Rep. Roger Thomas (Elkader), Rep. McKinley Bailey (Webster City), State Senator Herman C. Quirmbach (Ames), Rep. Mary Gaskill (Ottumwa), Rep. Bruce Hunter (Des Moines), Rep. Eric Palmer (Oskaloosa), and Rep. Dennis Cohoon (Burlington)

i believe Joe Biden's last position on Pakistan before the assassination, was that General Musharraf should share power.

Biden's question:"How many of you are willing to vote for a candidate not able to be Secretary of State?" is a telling one. Why are the Dem front runners all candidates who are weak on foreign policy? These glamour candidates will not wash with mainstream American voters. Richard Cohen gets it right, I think, in the Washington Post editorial now being reprised in their look back over 2007:

None of the candidates of either party are making any sense on this, because they mostly don't know what they're talking about and mostly don't care. What they do care about is (mis)interpreting these events in a way that fits their own agendas.

They are not the centre of the universe and need to get over themselves. Believe it or not, there are actually some few things going on in the world that have nothing whatever to do with the presidential election or any of the candidates. If they want to stop sounding like idiots, they need to remember that.

So next time we have a political crisis, let's hope Pakistan's political contenders have important statements to make which, just like ours, are actually percieved as a threat to other nation's soveriegnty. Some help our guys have for them.
In the mean time, Ron Paul, seems to think that we should mind our own business, and pay attention to Pakistan in order to avoid the miserable pitfalls in which they find themselves and when Pakistan figures it out for themselves we should help those forces in Pakistan's society that favor freedom; freedom of choice, freedom from religious tyranny, freedom to learn and apply what they've learned. As I see it no candidates are actually applying the Pakistan lesson to our own situation while the GOP candidates are trying to increase religious creed to public policy...nothin' but trouble ahead on that path, as any genuine (as opposed to Newt Gingrich's warped verson) History will confirm.
